Free iPod Nano
Gratis just opened up their latest site for a free Apple iPod Nano.
The Nanos are awesome. They are as thin as a pencil, hold 1,000 songs, come in either classic iPod white or black, and have a color display that can display album art.
All you have to do is sign up here, complete an offer, and get some referrals for your own free Apple iPod Nano.
I've gotten three free iPods, a free television, a free Coach purse, and several PayPal payments, so this is definitely legit.
Hurry up and sign up now! These Nanos are amazing!

Ok, fine. Fine, fine, fine. I just completed an offer (Columbia House DVDs - I woulda bought them anyway). Now, I hope I can get enough people so I can get an iPod Nano! They're cute :)
Question, and I'm only asking you because you've done this a BAZILLION times: is it normal that it doesn't show that I completed an offer right away? Because I definitely did, but it's saying I didn't. It says it takes, like 15 days which seems bizarre to me, but maybe it's just how they work, huh? :)
Posted by Alison at September 9, 2005 08:17 AM
Gratis pissed me off ages and ages ago. I had more than the necessary referrals and they refused to grant me any of them (to spite them having show in my account for a few days, and then being deleted mysteriously).
I know you do well by them, but I think they fuck over far more people than they actually allow to get free shit.
Posted by Ms. Pants at September 9, 2005 10:22 AM
How referrals are necessary to get the nano?
Posted by Joe at September 9, 2005 05:20 PM
I'll have to give it a try. I would love to get an ipod of any kind these days!

Doesn't Anyone Want to Help Me Out?
Okay, people, I only need one more completed sign up over at MP3Players4Free.com and then I can claim my $275 in cash. There's even tons of instant credit offers!
Doesn't anyone want to help me out? Pretty please? I'm so close!
Update: woot! Someone did an instant offer, so it looks like I should be good to go! For some reason it's not allowing me to pick my bonus gift, but I've e-mailed their tech support, so hopefully I'll hear something soon. Yay!
So, does anyone want to sign up for DS4Free.com now? I only need two more - one for the regular gift and one for the bonus. ;-)

Hives and Blogathon Thoughts
Wow. What a last two days.
As you can probably tell from my last Blogathon posts, I ended up getting hives very, very badly on Saturday and Sunday. Like so bad that I couldn't open my eye because it was swollen shut. Like so bad I thought I was going to go crazy from the itching and that my face would never look normal again. Yeah, lots of fun.
I slept almost all day Sunday after the Blogathon, so apparently it is exhausting being the elephant man. I woke up this morning and went to the doctor's office, convinced the whole time that he was going to chide me for not going to an ER on Sunday (I did call the twenty-four hour nurse helpline on the back of my insurance card and she said if I wasn't having problems breathing, then I could wait until Monday) and that now my face was going to be permanently fucked up. Yeah, I'm not neurotic or anything. *rolls eyes*
Luckily, they were able to see me pretty soon after getting there since I showed up without an appointment. My doctor was concerned that there was going to be a problem with my eye since it was completely swollen shut, but after having me hold it open and track his finger, he said it looked fine and that there didn't seem to be a problem with it.
I then got a steroid shot and he gave me some allergy and steroid pills and a steroid cream to help with the itching. Since I'm still housesitting for Elaine, I drove back to her side of town to find a pharmacy. It's unbelievable, but I could only find one CVS over here and they were out of my medicine. I swear, on my side of town, you can't drive more than a block without hitting a CVS and/or Walgreen's, but I was having no luck today.
After about an hour, I finally remembered that there's a Super Wal-Mart not too far from her house, so I drove back that way. Sure enough, they had a pharmacy and had my medicine is stock, so I was able to get my stuff and head home.
I've spent most of the day napping, so I'm not sure if it's from the medicine, feeling crappy, or just a combination, but at least I can open my eye now. I think I'm going to grab some dinner and then go to bed early.
Aside from the hives and the last few hours of posts sounding really whiny (but I really did have a reason to whine, I swear!), Blogathon went really well.
Despite the fact that I only started raising money nine days before Blogathon started, I managed to raise exactly $400 for my charity, Heifer International.
My goal was to raise $500, but I would really love it if I could break $403, the amount I raised last year. Donations are being accepted until tomorrow evening, so if you could spare any money, I would really, really appreciate your donations. Remember, too, that for every $5.00 that you donate, your name goes in a drawing for a set of my Burn It mix CDs, four in total.
I also wanted to say thank you again to the people that have already sponsored me: Mac, Laurence, Wendy, Howard, Mie, Elaine, Ealasaid, Elke, Kristine, Ken, Luka, Brenna, Don, Groovehouse, Karel, Shawn, Lilith, Terry, Naubionna, Jaime, Katie, and Heather. Y'all truly rock!

I'm always so worried when somebody mentions hives, even though one in five people will have an acute case in their lifetime. But because I am one of the lucky few to be afflicted with chronic hives, I have a unique perspective and I'm always scared when a friend mentions it! I'm so glad you're okay, I really am. Believe me, I know exactly what you went through.

2005 Blogathon
Last year I participated in Project Blog where you blog every half hour for 24 hours staight to raise money for charity (you can read all of my posts here).
I'd been planning on participating again but somehow Blogathon 2005 totally snuck up on me and to make a long story short, it's next Saturday and I haven't even started raising money.
Last year I raised slightly over $400 for Heifer International, who I'll be blogging for again this year.
If you're not familiar with Heifer International, they supply poor locations around the world (including here in the United States) with a gift animal - a goat, llama, water buffalo, rabbit, etc. - which the people of the region are then taught to take care of. The animal supplies the people with food, (milk, eggs, meat, etc.) items like fur that can be sold or used to make clothing, and much more.
The best part is that the recipient of the animal is then required to give some of the offspring to another family or group of people in need. They in turn do the same and so on and so forth. By teaching people how to become self-reliant and having them help others, Heifer has assisted millions of people in becoming healthy, happy individuals that can stand on their own two feet. In essence, Heifer is the embodiment of the sentiment "Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man, feed him for a lifetime."
For every $5.00 that you pledge to sponsor me, I'll put your name in a drawing for a set of my Burn It CDs, four CDs in total.
In addition, every half hour I'll put up at least one mp3 from my ginormous mp3 collection up for download. The music really ran the gamut and included stuff like The Lord of Acid's Pussy, Hooverphonic's Club Montepulciano, and Touch & Go's Would You...?.
I would love to top my goal from last year, so please sponsor me. It's for a really great cause and you get to watch me make sleep-deprived posts and download free music, so everyone wins.

First OfferCentric Payment Received
This week I received my first PayPal payment from OfferCentric (I elected to take the money rather than the item).
I guess this means that not only have I proved that Gratis Network isn't a scam, I've also proved the same thing for OfferCentric.
If you haven't signed up for the various sites where you can get free flat screen televisions, iPods (in all their different sizes and forms), designer handbags, computers, and more, what are you waiting for? It does take time and patience, but it's well worth it in my opinion.
If you're new to OfferCentric, here's the offers that you can take advantage of under them:
- MP3Players4Free.com
- PVPs4Free.com
- Cameras4Free.com
- DS4Free.com (Nintendo DS)
- iPodShuffles4Free.com

Flickr Obsession
Lately I have been spending most of my spare time over at Flickr.
I've got over 600 pictures in my photostream now, which means it takes a lot of time to go though and add titles, descriptions, and tags, not to mention uploading them to various groups (I belong to eighty-eight of them. I am such a freak). I've created seven sets and have several more in mind.
I've also added a few new shots of some flowers in the yard that I think turned out really well.
My newest thing to do, though, is to browse among the thousands of photos for new favorites since so many of the photos there are just stunningly beautiful. I then save the larger versions and now I've got tons of gorgeous backgrounds for my desktop. Right now this picture of a Sydney sunset is the desktop on my laptop and this one I took of some orange roses is my desktop on my regular computer.
So much photography fun. I've definitely got to get out and start taking more pictures, especially since Red is capable of taking some extraordinary photos.

GreenZap = Free Cash!
This summer, PayPal is going to be experiencing a little competition from this new site, GreenZap.
I remember signing up for PayPal back in the day and getting $5 to join. Well, GreenZap is giving everyone who preregisters $25. That's $25, to you, for free, just for signing up. No banking information is even required.
I figured it can't hurt, so why don't you go sign up too? After all, who can't use another $25? Well, besides Bill Gates and Donald Trump and I doubt they read me anyway.

Blingo Search Tip
Several of y'all have signed up under me at Blingo, the new Google-based search engine that gives out prizes to random searchers.
I had noticed in their FAQ that you can only win two prizes a month (shame it's only two, but it's still two more than I would have had without them!). I wondered if you won a prize that you didn't really want, like a movie ticket (which five of my referrals have already won; way to go!), and chose not to claim it, would it count against your prize quota. They said no, it doesn't count, so you might want to keep this in mind when you win something.
If you're not already a member, what are you waiting on?

Five Questions: The Meme
The other day Wendy, my birthday twin, participated in this meme where you get asked five questions and then you ask someone else five questions.
Here are mine:
1. Someone just gave you a round trip ticket anywhere in the world. Where ya gonna go? I am so going to Italy. I've always wanted to go there and I will see The Vatican before I die.
2. Which current reality show is one you'd fill out an application for? The Amazing Race. You get to travel, the challenges aren't super difficult like Survivor, and I like to think I'm smarter than most of those people on there and could manage to get out of a city in two hours (unlike Susan and Patrick on an episode a couple of weeks ago) even with my horrible sense of direction.
3. When you meet new people do you ever Google them to see what you can find? I think I did once, but for the most part, no. If they have a blog, though, I totally visit.
4. Have you ever actually stolen or wanted to steal a pair of bowling shoes? When I was a teenager, I was on a bowling league, and I had my own fancy light blue shoes so I didn't have to steal any.
5. Can you paint with all the colors of the wind? Of course.
Now it's your turn. Follow the rules for your own mini-interview.
THE RULES
1. Leave a comment, saying you want to be interviewed.
2. I will respond; I'll ask you five questions.
3. You'll update your journal with my five questions, and your five answers.
4. You'll include this explanation.
5. You'll ask other people five questions when they want to be interviewed.

Give a Little Bit
There are several bloggers right now gearing up for their walkathons to help benefit some great charities. If you have a few dollars to spare, why not consider donating to the following people?
KB is raising money for the Walk for the Kidney & Urology Foundation of America. I've had kidney stones twice before thirty, so this is a cause near to my heart.
Wendy, my birthday twin, is raising money for the Three Day Walk for Breast Cancer.
Eka is also raising money for the Three Day Walk for Breast Cancer.
Pam is participating in the American Cancer Society Relay For Life.

I've seen people that have mentioned Audioscrobbler before, but it had totally slipped my mind until Mike reminded me about it.
So, being a lemming, I signed up and you can now view my profile and see what I'm listening to.
It also will let you see who you have musical tastes in common with, hopefully making it easier to find new groups that you like.

Double Your Gift to Heifer
I'm a big fan of the charity Heifer International. As a matter of fact, when I did the twenty-four hour Project Blog, they were the charity that I blogged for, raising over $400 in donations.
Right now, Heifer has become the beneficiary of a Million Dollar Matching Gift Challenge. This means that every dollar they raise between now and April 25th will be matched, dollar for dollar, up to $1 million.
Their success stories are truly inspirational; you can see what a difference Heifer has made throughout the world.
If you've got a little extra money, even if it's just a few dollars, please consider donating something to help their cause.

Coming Out of the Woodwork
Christine has declared that today be a "De-lurking is Delightful" Day and since I've been feeling lonely, I'm going to follow suit.
This blog doesn't get as many readers as it used to, but I know that at least a few of you still drop by here. So, speak up. Say hi. Make me feel loved.
After all, it's my birthday month which means that I can declare the rest of the time up until the 18th (which is my actual birthday) as my Birthday Season (ala Mac).
This gives you the chance to start my Birthday Season off right! Say hi or even send me a present. After all, I'm going to be thirty! It's a big occassion. Well, at least to me it is. ;)

Rabbit Rabbit!
Hard to believe, but it's already March 1st.
If you haven't said anything yet this month (which has only been about four minutes in the central time zone), go ahead and say, "Rabbit, rabbit."
If you're just now reading this this morning, simply reverse the process as you go to bed tonight by saying, "Tibbar tibbar." That's rabbit rabbit backwards.
It'll bring you some extra luck, especially if you're a March baby like me.

Gratis Customer Service Comes Through
As many of your know, I've received items from FreeHandbags.com, FreeiPods.com, FreePhotoiPods.com, FreeiPodShuffle.com, and FreeFlatScreens.com.
Last week I was contacted by Sean from Gratis Customer Support. A magazine wanted to write an article about people's experiences receiving their items and since I had just gotten my purple Coach bag, he was interested in my story, good or bad.
Unfortunately for Sean, my handbag experience was by far my worst. It took several e-mails and six weeks to get credit for my offer, they put my account on hold for a brief period, and worst of all, put my brother's handbag and flatsceen accounts on indefinite hold because they suspected we might be the same person.
I told Sean all of this, being very polite and including the fact that I'd had other experiences with Gratis that were much more positive.
He got back to me right away, was very nice and apologetic for my problems, and offered to look into my brother's account. To make a long story short, Russell's accounts were taken off of hold, he received credit for his offer, and Sean is now my personal in with Gratis Customer Service.
I know some people have had problems with Gratis in the past, but I hope that this recent experience with customer support means that they listened to all the people who had legitimate complaints and will be more flexible in their hold policies.
As a matter of fact, I was so pleased that I went out and signed up for FreeGamingSystems.com, FreeMiniMacs.com, and FreePSPs.com.
If you haven't signed up for any of Gratis's offers (or OfferCentrics.com's either), you can get a complete list here. You can even e-mail me your own referral link (don't post them here; I will delete them) and get added to the conga line that I have going on.

It's refreshing to hear that your still having all the good luck with them! I'm hanging in there.. so many signups but only three follow-thrus. Congrats again!

I'm still trying for that darn iPod for my boyfriend. Only one person completed an offer... a ton signed up, but just one completion. Nice to see that someone is making it work for them.

Very early happy b-day, mine is on the 18 also.
I am still working in my original iPod offer I need 3 people to complete offers. I really want to try the Mac Mini but i'm just imagining the issues I'll have getting that many sign ups .
Posted by Pierce at February 23, 2005 09:17 PM
I signed up at Freedesktoppc.com. After bugging all my friends and family to death, I finally got all 10 referrals completed. Suddenly my account changed to "hold" status, and gratis claims I have "multiple accounts"!? I honestly worked hard and put my reputation on the line, swearing to my referrals that this was not a scam. I don't have any way to contact the company other than through my in-account customer service, and they won't respond to any of my pleas for help. Could you assist me with information on how to contact gratis so that I can prove I am not "cheating"? They seem to be giving me the cold shoulder, and after all the work I put into this I don't want to just give up. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Free iPod Shuffle
I wasn't going to sign up, but Christine begged me to, so I registered for a free iPod Shuffle at FreeiPodShuffle.com.
It's a Gratis Network site and since I've got a free iPod, a free photo iPod, a free designer handbag, and a free flat screen TV, I know it's not a scam. You only have to get three users for the iPod Shuffle, so it should be easy enough to do.
They are so cute. You know you want one, especially for free. So go sign up here.
Just as a reminder, the complete list of free stuff that you can get (includes flat screen televisions, Nintendo DSs, TiVos, photo iPods, and more) can be found here.
As always, don't put your own referral links here. I will delete them!

Free Photo iPod - Delivered!
I'm over at Elaine's house and dogsitting while she is in Paris for Christmas. I called home and was talking to my mom when she noticed a DHL truck outside. I thought my 40 GB photo iPod from FreePhotoiPods.com might be delivered today and sure enough, that was it!
I really wish I was home now so I could play with it. Wheee! A new gadget just in time for Christmas!

The Song Meme-ory Game
I saw this over at KB's and I just had to play. Here's the rules:
Step 1: Put your media player on random.
Step 2: Pick your favorite lines from the first 25 songs that play.
Step 3: Post and let everyone you know guess what song the lines come from.
Step 4: Cross out the songs when someone guesses correctly and give them credit.
As these songs get guessed, I'll put them up for download. Right click and save as on the song name. Don't cheat and use Google either!

Holiday Sharing
It's time for the holidays (already!). Part of the most wonderful thing about the holidays is how people seem to want to help others more than usual. If you'd like to help out, why not give $6 to help Chinese students get eyeglasses? It's just a few dollars and it can make a real difference in someone's life.

It's Secret Santa Time!
It's that time of year again! ThinkBlank's Secret Santa program is back for another year.
It's simple: you fill out some basic information and give the address to your Amazon.com Wishlist. On December 10th, you get an e-mail with someone else's info and Wishlist. You then buy a gift and send it off to them. The limit is $15, so it's a cheap enough exchange.
This will be my third year and I've really enjoyed it in the past. If any of this sounds interesting, go check it out. After all, who doesn't like getting and receiving presents?

I guess I am old school computing where if you don't have anything useful to say you don't say anything. Of course that comes from when 1200 baud reigned and you actually had to pay extra for touch-tone. And yes, I did have to walk to school up hill, both ways, through a foot of snow in June ;)

You Can Have my TiVo When You Pry It Out of My Cold Dead Hands.
There a bill out there that might be voted on in the Senate that should concern TiVo and other DVR owners.
The bill would let people use technology to skip objectionable content - like a gory or sexually explicit scene - in films, a right that we already have. However, under the proposed law, skipping any commercials or promotional announcements would be prohibited. The proposed law also includes language from the Pirate Act (S2237), which would permit the Justice Department to file civil lawsuits against alleged copyright infringers.
So, not only would you not be able to skip commercials with your DVR, you could be sued for doing so. You also would be forced to sit through previews on DVDs. Critics also argue that the vague language could apply to a person who uses iTunes.
Like Mac said, "(i)n essence, this bill is a gift to corporate interests - if you’ve been paying attention, lo, these last four years it should come as no surprise whatsoever."
Have I mentioned how much I hate this fucking administration? Go here to write your Senators and urge them to vote against HR2391.

This is ludicrous! How would it be enforced?
Posted by KiwiNessie at November 17, 2004 02:57 AM
Anyone remember the old TV show 'Max Headroom'? On there it was illegal to even turn off your TV. Yikes!! Was it not Marx who said that religion was an opiate for the masses (or something like that)? Is that not what TV has become today?
As for enforcement - all DVRs (either stand alone units or software) would have to have changes that would track and give feedback as to when you hit that skip button or something like DVD players, which already have something that will prevent using say the menu button. I ran into a situation recently where you could not hit the skip button during the final credits of 'The L Word'. You could still hit the Menu button though. Weird.
As for, I think it was Mac's blog, that asked if next you could be fined for getting up during a commercial and going to the bathroom - the nice Nielson people already have (and have had for many years in reality) a system that can count how many people are actually watching a TV show. How hard would it be to build onto that something that would be able to track that what you are watching is a commercial and the number of bodies in front of the TV has changed? Can you say big brother? I knew that you could. (With all apologies to Mr. Rogers.)
Posted by Howard Hill at November 17, 2004 06:57 AM
You are aware that Tivo's going to start showing you popup ads when you fast forward through commercials, right?

FreeFlatScreens.Com Order
Today is my lucky day! I have placed my order from FreeFlatScreen.com for a free Sony 27" Trinitron WEGA flat screen television (retails for about $400). Now the waiting begins, though this one is supposed to be much quicker to get than the free iPod since they're predicting a couple of weeks until it ships.
Just goes to show that with a little persistance and a blog you can indeed get these free offers to work. If you're interested in participating in any of them or getting your link listed, here's the scoop.

actually, I was just using this opportunity to ask you to please get in contact with me and Mr. T. again because he's still quite confused about the iPod situation! xoxo

Calling All People Looking For Extra Money...
Awhile back I blogged about how I was getting paid (and a pretty good rate, I might add) to put a couple of text links up on my site. If you'd like to get in on the action, leave me a comment or send me an e-mail and I'll pass your name along to the powers that be so you can get paid to do nothing too.

Three Pictures - Take One
So far I've five people have asked me to take a picture of three random things, so here's what I have so far. KB's is going to have to wait until I leave the house tomorrow since, surprisingly enough, my house is not my favorite part of town. Better cleavage pictures may ensue as well.
First, we have Mace's requests. He asked for my monitor with my favorite p0rn site up, but since I don't surf p0rn sites (no, really, I swear), here's my desktop instead (image is from Pixel Decor if you like it). Next up he requested my booty. Finally, he wanted to see my toilet. Notice what I read when I'm in there without a book (which, admitedly is rare) - Card Player Magazine.
Next Guy wanted to see what was under my bed. Not much, apparently. Continuing the under theme, he then asked for the view under my sink and my favorite underwear.
Hilary wanted to see my kitchen, my bedroom closet (this is actually one of two closets I use. When I moved back in with my parents last year, my brother's stuff was in the larger closet, so now that he's gone, I'm using both), and my front door.
Finally, Mikey asked to see my good luck charm, if I had one. I actually have two - a lucky flying pig (bought when a friend and I found them on eBay. The auction said that everyone had to have a lucky flying pig and we agreed) and a lucky frog I bought in Galveston (I believe). Next up was my signature, but I've taken that down for now. Finally, he asked for a shot of my cleavage. I never did get one I liked, but this was the best of the bunch.
I'm still taking requests, so if there's anything that you've ever wanted to see around Casa McGuire, now's the time to ask. Hopefully I'll get KB's up soon.
Thanks to everyone who asked to see something!

Offer Centric Gift Changes
I know I was going to try and stop blogging about all those free swag offers from Offer Centric and Gratis Networks, but Offer Centric has made changes to their DVRs4Free.com, MP3Players4Free.com, PVPs4Free.com, and Cameras4Free.com sites that I thought people might like to know about.
Now, instead of getting a camera, a TiVo, an Apple iPod or Photo iPod, or personal video player, you have the option of taking cash instead. $275 for DVRs4Free.com, $275 for MP3Players4Free.com, $450 for PVPs4Free.com, and $325 Cameras4Free.com. If you've already got one of these items, it's still worth it to sign up and complete one of the offers (there are several trial offers that you can cancel before you get charged or only have to pay $7 or so for shipping), especially with the holidays coming up.

Late to the Party
This is a little late to the game since everyone has done this meme before, but I figured better late than never, right? Besides, maybe this will get me posting again about something other than free swag.
Here's the deal:
Think of 3 pictures you’d like to see. Leave whatever you’d like to see in the comments. Things around my house, or whatever… something I can take a picture of easily. Once I have enough requests, I’ll start posting them. If I can’t, or won’t, take a picture of something you’ve requested, I’ll let you know.
So ask away. What do images do you want to see from my life?

Cameras4Free.com
I know it seems like I can't shut up lately about all the free offers I'm finding, but ever since I got my free iPod from FreeiPods.com, I've been trying to rack up the free swag.
Since finding an offer for a free Photo iPod, I've since found one to get a free 5.0 megapixel camera. My current camera is okay, but I'd certainly love to upgrade. If you'd like a new camera too, sign up here and complete an offer to get started.
If you're interested in seeing what else you can get for free, you can get the complete list here. It includes TiVos, portable video players, flat screen televisions, Dell Dimension desktop PCs, and more.

I'm a Cool Cat, Yo.
Mac has this theory that everyone listens to at least one band that they think makes them cool.
She's proposed that everyone makes a top five "you must be cool if you like these songs" list and post the songs on their blog so you can make a "Cool Blogger" playlist and rock out to the tunes that your fellow bloggers think make them a bad ass. I personally think I'm a cool (even if geeky) person, so I had lots of bands that I wanted to use. Since we're limited to five, though, here's the one's I chose:
The Dining Rooms - Verso Il Sole
Jill Scott - The Way
Llorca - The End (Hepop Original)
Naomi - Zero Zero One
Nina Simone - Feelin' Good (Joe Claussell Remix)
(Please, right click and "Save As." Don't be an ass and direct link.)

Now, How About a Free Desktop PC or Designer Handbag?
I figured that since I had such good luck getting a free iPod and I'm really close to getting a free flat screen television too, I might as well sign up for a free desktop PC and a free designer handbag (I picked the Prada Mini Hobo, though they also have the Burberry Novacheck Minisling, the Coach Signature Demi Pouch, and the Kate Spade Pia Pochette).
If you haven't signed up for that, please feel free to use my link. I love my computer, but it's having issues and replacing it wouldn't be a bad idea. I personally signed up for the Ancestry trial since it's got a two week trial period before you get charged and you're credited instantly for the offer.

Ok, so I used your referral link to sign up for an an account, and I signed up for my free trial at stamps.com. Did this help you in some way? I hope so! I posted my referral link on my blog - I wonder how successful I'll be? :)
Posted by Trinity at October 14, 2004 09:08 PM
I tried to help out, but I can't do it. On the handbag deal, I didn't like any of the offers, and it won't accept my address for the TV of computer. It says my town and/or zip don't exist.
Posted by NinaKaye at October 20, 2004 09:34 PM
There used to be a company called FreePC.com that gave away desktop computers. I actually got one from them; the catch was that you had to agree to have part of the monitor real-estate taken up with their ads. The ads weren't TOO obnoxious, but after a few months they started flickering and doing all kinds of weird things. Eventually the company went under (it was a product of the dot-com boom, and then it went bust) and all their free PC recipients got a letter saying that we could keep the computer because they couldn't afford to pay for shipping to have the machines returned to them. They also provided us with instructions for removing the ads. It's worked pretty well ever since! (It's old now, but it still runs.)

It doesn't seem like they do those anymore at McD's...
We're they losing too much with people on the 'net getting together to get all the missing pieces?
Posted by Gary LaPointe at August 30, 2004 12:14 AM
My mom and all her buddies used to go to McDonald's every morning to have breakfast after they dropped us kids off at school in the morning - they were all stay at home moms and my mom was a nurse who worked the overnight shift, so it was a nice way for heer to take a break after she got off work. Anyway, they all used to pool their game pieces too! You can imagine that when one wonam won the trip to Disneyworld it was the big scandal - she had been hoarding game pieces!
I had no idea that people werte getting together online, but that was quite smart of them, huh?

Free iPods, Flat Screens, Dell Dimension 3000
Desktop PCs, TiVos, Ninetendo DSes, Cameras, Designer Handbags, and More For All | Dell Coupons
I have indeed received a free iPod from FreeiPods.com. I got a 20 GB one and you can view photographic proof here. Since then I have also received the iPod photo, the iPod shuffle, the free handbag, and the free flatscreen television.
Since I got one, I figured I would steal Christine's idea and put up links for people that still need referrers to get their free iPod. If you'd like you're link here for any of these sites, please send me an e-mail (be sure to change the AT and DOT) and I'll add you to the conga line here and on the main page for a week. If you would like your link to stay longer, click the PayPal button below and donate $10 for each week that you want your site to be linked.
When it's your turn to be posted, please let me know when you've reached your requirements so I can change you out. Also, please don't leave your referral link in the comments since it kind of defeats the purpose and I will remove them.
- My FreeiPodNanos.com link
- My FreeDesktopPC.com link
- My FreeMiniMacs.com link (No Dell coupons needed.)

While doing some searching, I also found another company that's doing basically the same thing for mp3 players (iPod, Rio Carbon, and iRiver), DVRs (TiVo), cameras (Canon S1 IS, Sony DSC-P100, Sony DSC-W1, and Canon A95), and PVPs or portable video players (Archos AV420, iRiver PMP-120, Creative Zen PMC, and 10" Portable DVD player). They also allow you to take a cash equivelant option, putting money directly into your PayPal account. The same with signing up and posting your link applies here as well.

Lots of people have signed up, but only three people that have completed offers under me at FreeiPod.com. All I need is two more people to complete offers, so please sign up if you can. Don't forget that anyone that signs up and completes their offer goes into a drawing for me to buy them something off of their Amazon wishlist.
Update: I have four people under me that have done their offers, so I'm going to steal a page from Christine's book and make a post where I put up the links for people who still need referrers. If you're looking to sign up, please go here.

First an iPod, Now a TV...
I was looking around the Net for some FreeiPod.com success stories (and I found quite a few of them) when I ran across FreeFlatScreens.com. It's run by the same people and has the same basic rules (sign up for an offer and then get eight people to do the same).
Since the iPod offer seems legit, I signed up for FreeFlatScreens.com too.
I know a flat screen TV would look nice in my house, so if you want one too, go sign up.

Free iPod Update
I've completed my offer (made a new eBay account) and had a few people sign up under me over at FreeiPod.com, but I still need people to complete their offers.
Update: Looks like they took down the offer to create a new account at eBay. The best offers in my opinion are buying $20 worth of stuff from PetCareRX (they even have free shipping) or if you don't have a pet, doing the free trial from RealRhapsody. You have to have a credit card to sign up, but if you cancel before the two week trial ends, you don't get charged.
You know you want to help me win an iPod, don't you? So, go sign up already.
Update: I received my free iPod on October 5, 2004 (view the evidence here), so I'm going to steal a page from Christine's book and make a post where I put up the links for people who still need referrers. PayPal Class Action Lawsuit
Turns out that there's a class action lawsuit against PayPal. If you opened an account between October 1999 and January 2004, you're eligible. To fill in a claim form, go here. Looks like the settlement's going to come to $50.00 a person.

Over $400
I have now raised over $400 ($403 to be exact) for my participation in Project Blog. My chosen charity was Heifer International. I went to see what that money could be used for and here's some of the answers:
- a buffalo and a llama
- a goat, a sheep, a pig, ducks, and geese
- bees, a pig, chicks, a llama, ducks, and some trees
There are many possibilities, though we don't have enough for a heifer. However, it's still not too late to sponsor me. Another $97 is all we need.
Thanks again to all the people that have sponsored me so far. It's been wonderful to watch the total grow and know that so many people are going to be helped simply because I stayed up and blogged.

Anonymous Sponsors Can't Win a Prize
If you're sponsoring me over at Project Blog, make sure that you're not showing up as an anonymous donor. If you are, I can't enter you in the drawing. Remember, for every $5.00 that you pledge, you get an entry into the drawing for a complete set of my Burn It mix CDs, six discs in total.
It's still not too late to be a sponsor!

$24,945.86 and Counting
Yesterday's Project Blog raised almost $25,000 - $24,945.86 to be exact. Donations are being taken through tomorrow, so it's still not too late to sponsor someone.
I will be doing a drawing after sponsorship closes for a complete set of my Burn It mix CDs, six discs in total. For every $5.00 that you pledge, you get an entry into the drawing. At last count I had raised $338 and I would really love to break $400.
As a reminder, you can read all my Project Blog posts here. Each post has at least one mp3 to download, but I will be taking them down in the next day or two, so I'd go get them now while the getting's good.

Forty-Eight Posts? What Am I Going to Talk About?
Project Blog is now a little less than seven hours away and today it hit me that I have to make forty-eight posts and I have no idea what I'm going to talk about. I had planned on talking about how skydiving had affected me, but I've already done that. Hell, I've even already talked about my new shoes. I will be posting a new mp3 ever half hour (they'll be up for a limited amount of time; in other words, when I feel like taking them down, probably after a few hours of being up for offer), so I'll be sure to say a few words about the song and why I chose it.
So here's your chance to make suggestions about what *you* want to hear me talk about. Feel free to leave me a comment or send me an e-mail. All suggestions will be considered though if I don't want to blog about it, you'll have to pony up a serious donation to convince me otherwise.
Don't forget that for every $5.00 that you sponsor me, your name goes in a drawing for a set of my Burn It CDs, six in total. I would really, really, really love to hit $500, so please consider sponsoring me, even if it is just a few bucks.

Project Blog Reminder
Just a reminder that Project Blog is this Saturday. Every half-hour for twenty-four hours straight I will be blogging for charity.
My charity is Heifer International. Heifer is a stupendous charity that gives people a gift animal like a goose or cow and teaches them to become self-sufficient by raising their own livestock. In return, the recipient must pass some of the offspring to others, perpetuating the gift.
For every $5.00 that you sponsor me, I will put your name in a drawing for a complete set of my Burn It mix CDs, six in total. Also, during the twenty-four hours, I will be putting up a random song from my 10,000 song mp3 collection for you to download. Each one will only be up for a couple of hours, so there's some incentive to come by and see what I'm up to.
Thanks to all those that have sponsored me already! Y'all rock!

Project Blog Raffle
There are only nine more days until Project Blog and I am very far away from my goal of $250. To help encourage people to participate, I decided to do a little raffle. For every $5.00 that you pledge to sponsor me, your name goes into a drawing. The winner gets a complete set of my Burn It CDs including the Summer 2004 Edition that I'm working on. That's six CDs (this Burn's going to have two volumes) mixed by me. As anyone who's gotten my CDs in the past can attest to, they're pretty cool with snazzy labels and art work. You know you're dying to be the big winner, so go and sponsor me. Hey, it's only $5.00.

Project Blog - Heifer Organization
For the past couple of years, I've been a big sponsor of the Blogathon where, for 24 hours straight, bloggers blog every half hour for the accepting domations to go to charity of their choice. Blogathon is taking this year off, but Project Blog is, in theory, doing the same thing this year. Since I'm unemployed right now and consequently don't have as much money to give in support, I've decided to participate instead.
My chosen charity is Heifer International. I've been a big supporter of Heifer since I found out about their site around four years ago. They supply poor locations around the world (including here in the United States) with a gift animal - a goat, llama, water buffalo, rabbit, etc. The people of the region are then taught how to care for it. The animal supplies the people with food, (milk, eggs, meat, etc.) items like fur that can be sold or used to make clothing, and much more.
The best part is that the recipient of the animal are then required to give some of the offspring to another family or group of people in need.
If you can spare a few dollars, please go and sponsor me. It's a wonderful program and they can use all the help they can get. I will be talking more about Project Blog as the date approaches and I'm thinking of a few small things that I can give away (maybe Burn It CDs?) to help encourage people's support. I've never done this before so please be kind and sponsor me.

Strengthen the Good
In response to the beheading of Nick Berg, The Command Post decided to do something positive. That something is helping Susan Tom, the mother of 13 children - 11 of them adopted, most of whom have handicaps or disease - go to college. There is currently a fundraising drive to accomplish this goal.
They've already reached their goal of $10,000, but the more the better. Donations are being accepted until midnight tonight, so if you have even a dollar to spare, why not go and help these children go to college?

Text Ads For Dollars
It's been a while since I mentioned this, but I thought I'd go ahead and see if there's any new interested parties.
If you look down near the credits that are on every skin, you'll notice text links (only two of them are for this) under the heading "Sponsored Ads." A little birdie had told me about this program, so I took a shot and signed up. Let me tell you, selling out was well worth it. I put those links on my pages and I've already been sent money via PayPal - an extremely fair amount in my opinion. You don't even have to have a certain number of clicks - just list the links.
Interested? Want to be a sell out too? Either send me an e-mail (change the AT to @) or leave a comment here and I'll pass your name on to the appropriate party.

Dirty Bug
I was going to go to bed, but I decided that I'd have sex one more time (over on Breedster, you pervert!).
Apparently, I really am a slutty bug because I just got this message, "A sexually transmitted virus has affected your reproductive system; all eggs are infertile. You cannot invite any friends. Fornication will transmit the virus to your partner." (If you're a bug too, watch out for mbvisiontt - he's the one who infected me.)
Of course the FAQ doesn't say anything at all about STDs, so I have no idea if my bug is now infertile forever or if somehow I can visit a bug hospital and get better. Anyone else have this happen to them?

Posted by Susan at April 27, 2004 10:48 PM
It happened to me too! I was sitting there and all of a sudden a lady-bug came along and fornicated with me, next thing I know, I'm infertile. Very sad day, and it was only my second time. I was barely a day old at the time. :'(
Posted by wilsonodk at April 28, 2004 02:09 PM
I wanna be a bug too!!
Posted by Trisha at April 29, 2004 10:41 AM
Yeah - me too - I got infected last night and I'm pissed. If you know you are infected - don't spread it! And there is no way to protect yourself. All 5 eggs I had are infertile now and I don't want to spread it to anyone else so I'm just a useless bug.
I wonder if there will be some sort of cure or maybe they shoud implement some way to consent before another bug jumps on top of you without your knowledge?
Posted by cybertoad at April 29, 2004 12:09 PM
Allegedly there is a purple bug that cures you by touching it. Don't know its name yet. Also, the virus creator was poking fun at straight sex relationship sby making a virus that only M/F sex would transmit. Have sex with same sex (or your own children) and you are allegedly unaffected.

Thanks to the ever delightful Joelle, I found out about Flowers for Al and Don. Basically, Darren is going to buy a ton of bouquets and give them to random gay couples waiting in line to get married in San Francisco.
It's a very sweet thing and a great way to show your support for gay marriage, so go give a few bucks if you can.

Secret Santa Time
It's that time of year again - time for ThinkBlank's Secret Santa Exchange! This is their third year doing the exchange and I've had great fun in the previous two. The limit for the gift is $15 (though you can spend more), so it's a nice, cheap way to spread some holiday cheer. Go sign up!

I am new to blogging and am now addicted. I had no idea there were such neat things out there. I don't have my own blog yet but I am working on it. Until then I get to enjoy other people's blogs. :) The ornament exchange and the secret santa exchange are great. Boy do I love Christmas Time!
Posted by Educational Child Toy at November 12, 2003 12:47 PM
Hiya! I saw your name on the Ornament Exchange List... I'm glad to be on there with ya!
I'd love to sign up for the Secret Santa thing this year, too, but I got stiffed last year, so it sort of left a bad taste in my mouth. Maybe I'll change my mind, though... it's something to think about, anyway. :)
Happy Hump Day!
Posted by D at November 12, 2003 03:27 PM
I did one of those last year.. and it was a pain in the ass. You probably have a much better system... I just drew names out of a hat, and sent the addresses of the recevier to everyone.
I still don't know if everyone gave gifts or not ? *lol*
I wish I could this year, but I'm broke. I'm working on sending people their mix cd's I owe them from quinessential burn :(.
Posted by Miss Tay at November 12, 2003 03:37 PM
I got stiffed last year as well. I didn't get a gift until after New Years. I guess she forgot or something. Anyhow, I won't do another 'net one, but I will do the Sis-2-Sis one. :) At least I can trust the girls there. We are doing an ornament exchange there as well.
Posted by Sara at November 13, 2003 04:29 PM
This a great idea! Thanx for sharing the info Kim =)
BTW I saw the heads up about the blog - ornament exchange and signed up for that too! Of course you know I love exchanging ornaments!

Sponsored Ads
For those of you that contacted me regarding putting the text links up on your site, I checked with Natalie, my contact, and she said she's running behind but you should hear from her on Monday.
If you missed the first post, if you look down near the credits, you should see two text links under "Sponsored Ads." For putting them up on four sites I run, I'm getting $70 a month. There's no pop-ups, no minimum click-through rate required, and if you don't like the links you're sent, you can request new ones.
If you'd like to participate, either send me an e-mail or leave your name, URL, and e-mail address in the comments and I'll pass your name on. It's easy money and with the holidays coming up, I'm sure it could come in handy.l

Selling Out (But Oh So Worth It)
If you look down near the credits that are on every skin, you'll now notice two text links under the heading "Sponsored Ads." A little birdie had told me about this program, so I took a shot and signed up.
Let me tell you, with all the doctor bills that have started arriving, this was much needed!

Wouldn't You Like to be a BXer Too?
Over the past two days I have been busy scrounging the local thrift stores for books. As a result, my BookCrossing Bookshelf has a ton of books available for trades or RABCKs (Random Acts of BookCrossing Kindness - where someone sends you a book and asks for nothing in return).
Since I've become really active in the last month or so, I've had literally dozens of books come my way out of the kindness of other people's hearts. I've done my own RABCKs over there, but now I want to try and get others involved.
Here's the deal. The first three people who register at BookCrossing will get a book from my shelf (any of the ones with an @ symbol in front of it; sort my shelf alphabetically to find them easily) along with a special gift.
Once you've registered send me a PM (Private Message) from the site with a note saying you saw this post, the book you want, and your address. All I ask is that you read the book in a timely manner and then either release it into the wild (leave it somewhere) or pass it on to another BookCrosser.
I know I'm probably be a little rabid about the BookCrossing thing, but it's such a great program. I've encouraged people to read my whole life, so I can't help but be annoying about this.

Bookrings and Bookrays
You may remember last week when I mentioned that I found out that BookCrossing has a forum for bookrings, bookrays, and bookboxes, making it cheap and easy to get new books to read.
Today I went and updated my BookCrossing bookshelf so that you can see which rings/rays that I've joined. Most of these rings/rays are still open, so if you see anything that you want to read, you should be able to join the list too.

Free Books
I've mentioned Book Crossing, a read and release program for books, before, but today I found out that there is a forum where you can sign up for different bookrings. A bookring is just like it sounds - someone reads a book, sends it to the next person on the list, and so on. So far I've already participated in three rings.
What this means is there are free books to read for the asking! The only requirement is that you leave a jounal entry about the book and send it to the next person. This would be perfect for anyone who doesn't have a lot of money to spend on books. The forum for bookrings can be found here.
If you're not already a member, feel free to use this link to sign up and don't forget to add me to your friends list!

Blogathon 2003
This year's Blogathon is over and the grand total for donations is astounding. 432 participants raised $92,790.95! Isn't that incredible?
Donations are being taken for another 48 hours, so if you haven't donated already, please condisder doing so. Wouldn't it be great if the $100,000 mark could be broken?
Goddess Magazine's group blog managed to raise $255, slightly more than a quarter of Erika's goal. You can sponsor us here. We'd really appreciate it!

Off topic but you've inspired me to join more webrings. We share some common interests so I have been able to locate some good ones from your sidebar. So, thanks!
BTW, how can I add 'subscribe/unsubscribe to post' onto my comment box (with and without email address)? Would totally apppreciate any tips on that.

Blogathon to Support Goddess
Erika has decided to have a group of bloggers participate in this weekend's Blogathon for Goddess Magazine.
Goddess Magazine is a project that she's very involved in that gives young girls the chance to speak in their own voice about what interests them.
It's a fabulous program, so I offered to blog this weekend. You can find us during the Blogathon here.
Please consider sponsoring this incredible program. They are hoping to raise $1,000 to pay the girls for their stories, so every dollar helps.

Abracadabra
And now, because she demanded it:
I heat up, I can't cool down
You got me spinnin' 'round and 'round.
'round and 'round and 'round it goes
Where it stops nobody knows.
Every time you call my name
I heat up like a burning flame.
Burning flame full of desire
Kiss me, baby
Let the fire get higher.
Abra Abra Cadabra -
I want to reach out and grab ya.
Abra Abra Cadabra - Abracadabra.
You make me hot, you make me sigh.
You make me laugh, you make me cry.
Keep me burnin' for your Love
With the touch of a velvet glove.
Abra Abra Cadabra
I want to reach out and grab ya.
Abra Abra Cadabra - Abracadabra.
I feel the magic in your caress.
I feel magic when I touch your dress.
Silk and satin, leather and lace.
Black panties with an angel's face.
I see magic in your eyes.
I hear the magic in your sighs.
Just when I think I'm gonna get away
I hear those words that you always say:
Abra Abra Cadabra -
I want to reach out and grab ya.
Abra Abra Cadabra - Abracadabra.
Every time you call my name . . .
I heat up, I can't cool down.
My situation goes 'round and 'round.
I heat up, I can't cool down.

Guest Posting at The Neurotic Fishbowl
Steven and I are leaving for Vegas on the 11th, so I thought I'd open the place up to guest posters while I'm gone. Last year I had Promo do all the posting, but this year I'm going to do what Nicole did when she went to Paris and have multiple guest posters.
Send me an e-mail (replace AT with @) and you'll get to guest blog while I'm in Vegas. You can blog whenever you feel like it, however much you feel like. I just ask that you make at least one post during the four days we're gone.

Project Blog Pays Off
Earlier this year Rannie posted about Project Blog. I went to the site to see what it's about and decided to sign up.
Yesterday I got an e-mail from them saying that one of their clients, Nokia, noted how I use photography on my site and would like to send me a Nokia 3650 - a cell phone with a built-in digital camera along with other features like a calendar and contact manger, wireless web browsing, and more. It comes with two months service through T-Mobile and at the end of the test period, I get to keep the phone.
Needless to say, I am completely psyched about this. They're shipping the phone early next week, so I'll even have it in time to take it with me to Vegas. Many thanks to Rannie for the link in the first place.

Working Out Tracks
I just finished addressing the envelopes that my CDs for Alison's First Ever Supa-Cool Fitness/Diet Blogger Workout CD Swap are getting mailed in. On the first pass through all my music, I chose five hours of tunes, so getting everything down to one CD was virtually impossible. Everyone in the two groups I'm in lucked out because I decided to make two CDs instead of just one. The first CD is more upbeat and techno, but I think both of them ought to be good to work out to. If you're curious about what songs I chose, just keep reading.

Operation TROOPtrax
Michelle has come up with a great idea: Operation TROOPtrax.
The idea is to collect money and send CDs, comic books, and magazines to the men and women serving overseas. It's a great idea and one that I think our military would really appreciate.
Even if you don't support the war, you should support the troops, so go give a few dollars.

Participation Positives
It's Monday, so time to start the week out right with Jess's Participation Positives!
- Bella came and got in the chair with me for a hug (she puts her paws around your neck and kneads. It's so cute!)
- I've been StairMastering like crazy at very high levels and I'm proud of myself
- I finally got smilies in my comments and it was super easy to do
- My wireless mouse and keyboard that I won was finally delivered last week
- My mom's going to record Ringu and Battle Royale to DVD for me so I can finally watch them
- I can't wait to participate and get my CDs in Alison’s First Ever Supa-Cool Fitness/Diet Blogger Workout CD Swap
- I cleared almost everything off of the TiVo (a silly thing for a positive, but we had like 80 hours of stuff on there)
- I dinged another level in EverQuest
- I love and am loved

Workout CD
This is late considering sign-ups end tomorrow, but if you want some good music to workout to, go join Alison's First Ever Supa-Cool Fitness/Diet Blogger Workout CD Swap.
Basically, you make four copies of a mix CD, keep one for yourself, and send out the others to other bloggers. Sounds like a great way to get some good music to me!

Blogging For a Cure
Several years ago I found a site called United Devices. They ask you to volunteer your PC to help process molecular research being conducted by the Department of Chemistry at the University of Oxford in England and the National Foundation for Cancer Research. To participate, you simply download a very small, no cost, non-invasive software program that works like a screensaver: it runs when your computer isn't being used, and processes research until you need your machine. Your computer never leaves your desk, and the project never interrupts your usual PC use.
There is no cost to participate and no impact on your computer use. The project software cannot detect or transfer anything on your machine but project-specific information. It just allows your computer to screen molecules that may be developed into drugs to fight cancer. Each individual computer analyzes a few molecules and then sends the results back over the Internet for further research. This project is anticipated to be the largest computational chemistry project ever undertaken and represents a genuine hope to find a better way to fight cancer.
You can download the agent here and read the FAQ here.
If you do decide to join, I have created a team called Blogging For a Cure. Please sign up for the team after you join. If you dedcide to become a team member e-mail me your username at UD (so I can tell who you are) and site info and I'll add you to the blogroll.
This is an easy, free way to help fight cancer, so please add your computer's resources to the project.

Thanks for the link Kymberlie, I have been looking for something like that, but wasn't sure which one I should download. Hugin had found one on prime numbers, and I know there is another one for finding life in space. But, this one is more of what I have been looking for. So thanks.

hello kymberlie,
i followed your lead to the UD site and i eventually downloaded the software and is now a member. i also enlisted to be in your team and i sent you details through email. i am happy to be able to help even in a small way and thanks to you for enabling me in this regard.

Did you see EJ's post a few weeks ago to the H-Town blog list? He's been asking people to do something similar in honor of his Dad who passed away from cancer. It's such a great cause and means so much to him I just had to spread the word.
Posted by Christine at February 20, 2003 11:33 PM
Just a quick question for you, Kymberlie, I am running two devices, one of them is the cure for cancer, and the other one is smallpox, so my question is can I still join the team? thanks. *shy smile*

Just wanted to let you know I've got two machines running now.. possibly one more if I can sneak onto hubbies and change it up :-) Thanks again for starting up "Blogging for a Cure"

Speaking of Books...
I hit the used bookstore and now have seven more books to release into the wild through BookCrossing. They are:
Next week I'll start releasing them and see if I have any luck with someone notifying BookCrossing that the books have been found.

Oooo ... I wonder what would happen if you left the entire 12-book Belgariad/Malloreon-plus-prequels laying around for somebody to find? The mind boggles. :)
Sounds more like a set up for Candid Camera!

I love bookcrossing - but nobody has found any of the boosk I have left either - well at least not gone on the site and reported finding them. I almost wish you didn't have to register to report a found book. I wonder if that might be the barrier. I have a stephen king book i'm releasing tomorrow - so who knows.

The David Eddings series was one of my favorites back in junior high. I started reading it when he'd only published the first 2, and had to wait a year each for the rest of them. I've been thinking about re-reading them...

No Book News
Still no news on the copy of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale that I released into the wild through BookCrossing.
When I was at the gym yesterday I put Animal Farm on one of the bikes, but it wasn't picked up and I was worried about it being thrown away, so I took it with me.
Now let me ask you a question: Brian, my manager, and Steven both don't think the book thing will work because people will think it's weird or a strange plot and not pick it up. If you saw a book with a pink post-it note on it proclaiming it was free, would you think it was strange or would you pick it up?

I actually meant to comment on this yesterday, and never got around to it. I used to do this when I traveled all the time. (I used to fly 2 or 3 times a month at my old QA manager gig) I'd buy a book, finish it up, and then leave it on the plane for the next person to find. It never occured to me to leave a note asking them to let me know they found it/liked it.
I think it's just an awesome idea. Go you! :D
Posted by skits at January 23, 2003 02:45 PM
See now, I'd love for the whole Bookcrossing idea to work, but I know that I would never pick up a random book lying around, even if it had a note on it. I'm so naturally suspicious I'd be furtively glancing around for a hidden camera, or a string [a la the whole dollar on a string trick].
Posted by Nicole at January 23, 2003 02:59 PM
(i would pick it up cos' a book is a book especially if it says free. but then, i'm not in a position to give advice on how normal ordinary people might react as i am very much removed from my sanity.)
Posted by bran at January 23, 2003 03:11 PM
Would I pick up a book adorned with a note proclaiming it free? I guess it depends, as wishy-washy an answer as that is. If I'd found Animal Farm, I would have passed it by because I already have a copy and would rather leave it for someone else. The same with The Handmaid's Tale. If it were something I didn't own, hadn't already read, and seemed interesting...sure, why not?
Posted by James at January 23, 2003 03:59 PM
Ya know, Kymberlie, if you want to counter people's negative assumptions, you might consider trying to get a little publicity for what you're doing.
Just write a short press release saying what you're doing and fax it to the newsrooms of your local newspapers and/or radio and TV station. This is just the kind of human interest story that the local media loves. :)
Posted by Dawn at January 23, 2003 04:21 PM
My mom does the same thing (she'll leave books in her laundrey room) for people to pick up.
and YES. :) Especially if it had a note on it, saying it's Free. (well, like the others leaving comments, if I didn't already have the book).
Posted by witchy at January 23, 2003 04:32 PM
I would take it in a heartbeat!
Posted by Michelle at January 23, 2003 05:03 PM
My husband works part time at DIA (Denver International) and he picks up books left in the plane all the time. I signed up with Bookcrossing with the intent of taking those books he gets and sending them back into the wild. I just keep forgetting.
Posted by susan at January 23, 2003 10:45 PM
I love the whole Bookcrossing idea. I keep meaning to print some lables and leave some books at the college and at the dog park. If I had never heard of Bookcrossing and found a book with a note on it I would have picked it up. Now I'll actually be looking for books like that!
Posted by Shanni at January 24, 2003 01:06 AM
Yes. I would pick it up, even if I already had it. I'd give it to someone else.

Spreading My Liberal Agenda One Book at a Time
Last night on the way home from work I stopped at the half price bookstore and got a copy of The Handmaid's Tale and Animal Farm for my BookCrossing to Change a Life plan.
This morning I dropped The Handmaid's Tale off at the local Starbuck's on my way into the office.
I can't wait to get an e-mail saying someone's found the book. I hope they like it as much as I do.
Btw, I do plan on releasing other favorites (Stephen King, Laurell K. Hamilton, etc.) into the wild. I think reading is a wonderful thing and hopefully books that are more "fun" will help lead people to acquiring a love for the written word.

Hello, just found your site through Aortal links and had to comment. I absolutely adore Margaret Atwood, and her books have been an inspiration to me. I think I'm going to have to go to our local used book store and do the same thing.
(P.S. Laurell K. Hamilton gets a two thumbs up in my book too, though her newer books irritate me to no end)

Bookcrossing to Change a Life
Jeanna and I were talking about my post regarding why I care about women's rights when I was struck with a bolt of inspiration.
I've heard about BookCrossing (read books and leave them for others to read and they leave them for others to read ad naseum), but have never participated in it. Thinking how Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale had such a profound impact on me, I hit upon the idea of getting books like it, Animal Farm, and Lord of the Flies (just to name a few) to release through BookCrossing. Hopefully, people would read these books and by reading them, maybe they would begin to think about the ideas that they discuss.
We're going to hit some used bookstores and get some copies to release into the wild, so here's your chance. What book or books influenced you? If you could have someone read a book, what would it be? Leave me some titles and I'll add them to the list.

White Oleander, Janet Fitch
This is Graceanne's Book, P.L. Whitney
The Lovely Bones, Alice Sebold
These are all girly books. But hey. I'm a girly girl.

Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach
The Little Prince by Antoine de St. Exupery
A Separate Peace by Jonathan Knowles
Of Human Bondage by Sommerset Maugham
The Art of Loving by Erich Fromm
All of these are books I read before I had reached the age of 20, and they had a profound impact on the rest of my life.
There's one more, which I read more recently: Fire in the Belly: On Being A Man, by Sam Keen.
Posted by Dawn at January 21, 2003 08:46 PM

Swappingtons is going to be huge. I'd bet 100 points that Andrew is going to need a server farm before the year is out (more likely, he'll hit the ceiling of what he can afford to host for free - ouch).
BTW, you listed your "Toy Story" DVD under the VHS category. Might want to fix that.

Some people find the point system at swappingtons suspect. You can make straight trades at www.swaparoo.com for a similar experience without the confusion.
Posted by Pete at March 10, 2004 09:21 AM
But what is annoying about a site like swaparoo is that you have to have something to swap with someone who you want something from. How likely is that?
Posted by Craige at April 22, 2004 12:27 PM
http://www.swagster.com is very similar to swapingtons and swaparoo, however, I find it to be much more straightforward than both. it's free too, and doesn't have any BS about points and shipping systems.

Swappingtons
This is kind of a cool idea. Swappingtons lets you list things that you don't want any more (books, CDs, DVDs) and in turn for sending the item off, you get points. With those points you can then trade for something you want.
I know I have a few duplicate DVDs and a bunch of duplicate paperbacks, so this might be a good place to get rid of them. If you sign up, please list kymberlie as your referrer. I've currently got a perfect copy of Reservior Dogs up for trade (or just e-mail me and make me a monetary offer).

Operation Santa Clause: A Call To Action
With the holidays approaching people usually like to give something to charity. While my favorite charity is Heifer International (Steven and I just donated a flock of chickens, a flock of ducks, and a share of a sheep), I wanted to bring to everyone's attention Operation Santa Claus: A Call to Action that Kim from Thymewise is heading up.
She needs your help in buying school supplies, food, and small gifts for a class of first graders that live in poverty in New York. Every little penny helps, so if you can spare a few dollars, that would really make a difference.

July Birthday?
I need someone with a July birthday to send me their information (Name, URL, wishlist URL, and birthdate) so that all the archives at I Wish, You Wish will work. Currently we have every month represented but July so that link is coming up dead. Anyone want to help me out and send me their info?
Update: I went and snagged Kelly's information. Hope she doesn't mind!

Hey there, I read about I Wish, You Wish at Kristine's site...it's amusing to see that there's someone as interested in blogger wishlists as I am! Is there any chance mine can be added to I Wish, You Wish? (My birthday is January 18th, though.)

i see you have bdays to add now, but i was going to suggest you add Harry Potter's bday. isn't his (the characters) in July?

Smitten
Cis e-mailed me last week with an idea about creating a companion meme to Reasons For Love the meme I have taken over where you post a list of reasons, simple but significant ones, why you love someone. It's called Smitten and it's got a great idea behind it.
What you do is post a picture of yourself and someone (even a pet; they're people too) together and write a brief post that shares a few of the reasons why you're so smitten.
Sound fun? Of course it does! Run over and get a button and get more details!

What if you're a Ki(y)mberly(ie), but only on the weekend? :-p
The proper regex way to write the name of the group:
/K(y|i)mberl(y|ie|ee|eigh)/i
Of course a more optimized way would be:
/K[yi]mberl[yie][ie]?
The second way would be better in that would let in 'creative' spellings like "Kymberli".

I can see someone is campaigning - Bella is number one! Seriously though, it's probably one of the best pictures - most of the rest of them are just blurs. Yes, I realize the subject is movement, but still, you can see Bella and you know what she is doing. I think that's much better than just a picture of a lit up bridge at night. You got my vote!

When I first moved up to Ohio, I had missed the fall season altogether. Just gray skies and scads of snow -- and that does not make a good impression. My first autumn left me awe-struck by the turning leaves. I could sit for hours on a porch swing, and stare at the colors mixing together on the breeze.

Blogs and Pets
It seems like most bloggers have pets and like to talk about them, post their pictures, whatever. Christine M. has created a site for people to share their pet's pictures - Blogs & Pets. I sent in some pictures of my fish and joined the webring. If you've got pets, why not go visit and join up?

Do You Wander-Lust?
I forgot to mention, but I joined Wander-Lust.com this week. It's kind of like Blog Snob, but you can also add a tag at the beginning of each post so that when the Wander-Lust spider runs, content from your blog will be posted on their webpage. I'm still not used to adding the tag, but I'm liking the program so far.

I signed up for this RIGHT before my server went down - it looks great!
Did you figure out how to add the tag right into your MT template so it would automatically catch your excerpt? I don't remember *exactly* how I did it, but when my server comes back up, I'll email you with it :)

Globe of Blogs
I submitted my information to the Globe of Blogs yesterday. It's kind of similiar to the Pepys Project, but allows you to find a blog by other information like birthday, sex of the author, or author's name. Kind of cool to see who's out there blogging with stats similar to yours.

Hey, thanks! I submitted my info too, and looked around a bit -- you and I were born in the same year. :)

The Pepys Project
Mike has started The Pepys Project which is a list of URLs for web logs, diaries, and journals from around the world, indexed by geographical area and then country. I was the first person to be added to the Texas category. Am I cool or what?

Thanks! We've only had that desk for a couple of months. Before that I was at the dining room table in a tortuous metal chair! I love that desk (and we got it on sale from Office Depot to boot!).

That's a great set up! Wow.

Love your desk!! I'm too ashamed to show mine. It's SUCH a mess. Maybe after I've moved. When I can start using my all shiny NEW desk. :)
