Failure
You know what's a good way to measure how much people think of you? The contempt and hatred that your father feels towards you.
Yeah, that's a good measure.

Someone's not sounding too happy. That's not so good. Here's to a return to happiness. :)

Only because he apparently can't see how well you're doing in life. :p to him then.
Posted by Lisa at August 13, 2005 06:49 PM
Actually, from what you've told me over the years, I don't think that is an accurate measure at all. I've known you for over 5 years now, and *I* think you're fabulous. So does Mike. Heck, even my Mom likes you. (And we know she can be hard to please sometimes!)
Call me if you need to talk. I'm here for you, baby. *mwah!*

Oh honey, I'm sorry. It sounds like heavy stuff going on. You want to know what I found out? The older I get, the less my father's opinion matters to me. As my kids get older and I learn to deal with their changes, I realize that my father was never equipped to be a good father. It's not even his fault. And I've learned that I don't need his approval. My sadness about him, it has occurred to me, is not actually about him but is a sort of mourning for something that never actually existed. I've "known" you a very long time now (damn, it really is a long time, isn't it?) and I know that you're absolutely fabulous and if you take a moment to think about it, you'll realize that that is the truth. Great big, comforting hugs to you. Don't let the bastards get you down sweetie.

Looking for something to do tonight?
If you are, River Oaks Theatre on West Gray is showing Back to the Future tonight as their midnight movies.
My brother, his friends, and some of my friends are going, so come out and join us if you're free. It should be fun.

I went and saw that movie in the theater on the date that he sets on the car - just a fluke that we were there that day. How cool is that?

Konfabulous
After listening to Dwight talk about how much he loves Konfabulator (especially now it's free), I jumped on the geeky bandwagon and downloaded it.
However, there are almost 800 widgets available, so finding the ones you can't live without is a little daunting.
If you run Konfabulator, which widgets are the ones you have to have?

I never used it to its fullest potential, but when I used it (back when we had to pay for it), I used mini-weather and the mini-calendar the most. Yeah, I know. A whole two widgets. Heh.
Posted by niki at August 12, 2005 12:21 AM
I have just downloaded it myself. I have the weather, scribbler & picture frame setup at work. I have a calculator loaded up to quickly load in - it is quicker than going through the Start button. If I had something shipping I would use the shipping tracker, but the nice thing with widgets is you can easily hide the ones you don't need immediately.
The one thing I would like to see is a favorites list so I could drop in the calculator and a few others that I don't use that often but I want quick access to without any worry of them falling off the recent list.
Posted by Howard at August 12, 2005 06:56 AM
Downloaded it, tried it, ditched it. It just felt like one more thing to clutter up the pc with. Eh.
Posted by LittleKenny at August 12, 2005 06:40 PM
I installed it, loved the idea (I love widgets on the mac) ... couldn't work out why their CPU meter said I was using 50 - 70% usage when idle, when I know it should be much lower ... task manager agreed with konfabulator.
Turned Konfabulator off and suddenly cpu usage wasn't a problem any more. Oh dear :( It'll stay off for now.
Love the idea though, I really want to love it :)
Posted by smeg at August 12, 2005 08:27 PM
I use the widgets on my mac for this purpose and my fav things that you might be able to find on konfabulator: weather for any city (I have 3 screens right now, Vancouver, Portland (to see diff across river), and Loma Linda (in-laws) - I swap that last one with whatever I'm watching at the time.) My very fav one is a TiVo now playing list that tells me everything that's on my TiVo w/o me turning it on. And there's a del.icio.us poster that detects the webpage I'm on and fills in the info to post. Oh, and some clocks for diff time zones. :) Helps when working with people in all areas!

I saw the "Returned Missionary" and "BYU" in the header and I immediately thought, "Oh no, you *should* not date Lance."
There is a "Date My Ex" site that is a lot like Match. I just found it last week through The Knot, and I thought, "I should set up a Bio for Kymberlie!" I wonder if it has to be an ex or if it can just be a friend. You are my heterosexual life partner after all...

Now there is a website for those who have dated Lance. http://www.idatedlance.com You can post comments about how your date with Lance went. I thought it was funny.

More Random Stuff
- I am almost completely hives free. My face is peeling like I got the world's worst sunburn (or stood next to a nuclear blast) and the right side is still a bit puffy, but I am definitely way improved. I didn't realize how shitty I felt this weekend until I started feeling better Monday night. How on earth did I complete the Blogathon?
- For some reason one of my credit cards that I paid online had dropped the 0 off the beginning of my bank account, so I got dinged with a $35 returned check fee (basically) and a $30 late fee. I called and bitched and they said they would reverse the late fee, but not the other fee. I hate places like that that don't verify your bank account info when you put it in for you (like PayPal or Capital One does). It's just an easy way for them to make money off of you. Bastards. I will be highly pissed if after updating my account information it doesn't work AGAIN when I try to pay it a second time on Friday.
- I cried through just about the entire last episode of Six Feet Under. How are they going to wrap that whole show up in two episodes? I still think I'm going to buy this shirt. NARM!
- I currently have over 1,000 e-mails sitting on my webserver - stuff I haven't even downloaded and added to the other thousand unread messages in Outlook. When the hell did it become so hard to get through all of my mail?
- I need a manicure in the worst way. My work schedule has shifted to a Tuesday through Saturday week, so I am going to take advantage of the empty nail place and go in the middle of the day Monday. Yeah!
- I just noticed that this picture is probably the only picture of me in my glasses on the Internet. Hmmm.
- I love this picture that Jay took. And I love that Jay now defends my mix CD position to the death. Ha! Another person who'll do my bidding! ;-)
- Thanks to looking nasty from those hives, I missed trivia night at The Flying Saucer for the first time in over a month and my team came in second place. Suxor.
- My new favorite cussword is one that I made up: fuckola. Has a nice ring to it, no?
- Must go shower so I can proof read something for my brother. He's such a great kid.

Hives and Blogathon Thoughts
Wow. What a last two days.
As you can probably tell from my last Blogathon posts, I ended up getting hives very, very badly on Saturday and Sunday. Like so bad that I couldn't open my eye because it was swollen shut. Like so bad I thought I was going to go crazy from the itching and that my face would never look normal again. Yeah, lots of fun.
I slept almost all day Sunday after the Blogathon, so apparently it is exhausting being the elephant man. I woke up this morning and went to the doctor's office, convinced the whole time that he was going to chide me for not going to an ER on Sunday (I did call the twenty-four hour nurse helpline on the back of my insurance card and she said if I wasn't having problems breathing, then I could wait until Monday) and that now my face was going to be permanently fucked up. Yeah, I'm not neurotic or anything. *rolls eyes*
Luckily, they were able to see me pretty soon after getting there since I showed up without an appointment. My doctor was concerned that there was going to be a problem with my eye since it was completely swollen shut, but after having me hold it open and track his finger, he said it looked fine and that there didn't seem to be a problem with it.
I then got a steroid shot and he gave me some allergy and steroid pills and a steroid cream to help with the itching. Since I'm still housesitting for Elaine, I drove back to her side of town to find a pharmacy. It's unbelievable, but I could only find one CVS over here and they were out of my medicine. I swear, on my side of town, you can't drive more than a block without hitting a CVS and/or Walgreen's, but I was having no luck today.
After about an hour, I finally remembered that there's a Super Wal-Mart not too far from her house, so I drove back that way. Sure enough, they had a pharmacy and had my medicine is stock, so I was able to get my stuff and head home.
I've spent most of the day napping, so I'm not sure if it's from the medicine, feeling crappy, or just a combination, but at least I can open my eye now. I think I'm going to grab some dinner and then go to bed early.
Aside from the hives and the last few hours of posts sounding really whiny (but I really did have a reason to whine, I swear!), Blogathon went really well.
Despite the fact that I only started raising money nine days before Blogathon started, I managed to raise exactly $400 for my charity, Heifer International.
My goal was to raise $500, but I would really love it if I could break $403, the amount I raised last year. Donations are being accepted until tomorrow evening, so if you could spare any money, I would really, really appreciate your donations. Remember, too, that for every $5.00 that you donate, your name goes in a drawing for a set of my Burn It mix CDs, four in total.
I also wanted to say thank you again to the people that have already sponsored me: Mac, Laurence, Wendy, Howard, Mie, Elaine, Ealasaid, Elke, Kristine, Ken, Luka, Brenna, Don, Groovehouse, Karel, Shawn, Lilith, Terry, Naubionna, Jaime, Katie, and Heather. Y'all truly rock!

I'm always so worried when somebody mentions hives, even though one in five people will have an acute case in their lifetime. But because I am one of the lucky few to be afflicted with chronic hives, I have a unique perspective and I'm always scared when a friend mentions it! I'm so glad you're okay, I really am. Believe me, I know exactly what you went through.

The End of Blogathon 2005
It's hard to believe, but the 2005 Blogathon is now officially over.
I'd like to thank all the people that sponsored me so far this year, raising a total of $371 for Heifer International. Since I didn't begin fundraising until a little over a week ago, I am pleasently surprised by the amount that we were able to raise.
My sponsors are as follows: Mac, Laurence, Wendy, Howard, Mie, Elaine, Ealasaid, Elke, Kristine, Ken, Luka, Brenna, Don, Groovehouse, Karel, Shawn, Lilith, Terry, Naubionna, Jaime, and Heather.
All of these people are getting their name entered into a drawing for a set of my Burn It CDs, four discs in total. We'll be accepting sponsors until Tuesday, so I won't do the drawing until then. If you can spare a few dollars, please go sponsor me. Keep in mind that I put over fifty songs up for you to download for free within these posts, so if you liked a few of them, sponsoring me would be a lovely thing to do.
I's also like to say congratulations to all the other bloggers that participated. We've managed to raise over $55,000 for many different charities to help lots of people in need. Fantastic job.
Here's the last download of the Blogathon. It should be pretty easy to see why it's the one I chose.

The Next to the Last Post
It's hard to believe, but it's actually almost time for the Blogathon to come to an end. I was beginning to suspect that I was stuck in some kind of an alternate universe where time went by really slowly. Happily, that's not the case.
Out of all of my mp3s, this one's probably my absolute favorite. The El Orbits are really incredible and you should definitely buy one of their CDs. The prices are very reasonable and the money will actually go to them instead of some big record company.

The sun's coming up, so it's definitely getting closer and closer to beddy bye time which is good since I almost fell asleep sitting up just a minute ago.

Blogathon Time
I don't know how it's possible, but it seems like it's always time to post (thirty minutes between posts isn't really anything at all, especially when you have to upload files, get the links to them set, etc.) but that we're always a long way from being done.
We're down to three and a half hours which is good, but I'm pretty sure that the rash on my face (which is spreading just about all over now) is hives.
I'm thinking about going to the doctor for a shot on Monday, but since I'm housesitting through Tuesday, if I'm allergic to something here, I don't know if that would help. Man, it really itches.
Let's see if something fast paced might help with the flagging energy levels out there.

I Spy With My Little Eye
Well, in my case, my left eye is still little and functioning normal, but my right eye has swollen about half way shut and itches like crazy. I don't know what the fuck is up with this, but I'm guessing some allergy must have kicked it. It almost feels like poison ivy, though I don't know how I could have gotten in to that.

These Foolish Things
Last night at the Geek Gathering, Barrett went through all the music on my iPod ("I'm not judging your music, but I am judging you a little." *snerk*).
Since I was bringing as much of my music collection as could fit on my iPod over here so I could housesit and have access to my music files, some questionable stuff made it on there (I swear, all the Michael Jackson music was stuff my ex had that I'd ripped when I was putting all of our music into mp3s).
I did feel compelled, though, to defend having Rod Stewart on my iPod. I like some of his older stuff (especially "My Heart Can't Tell You No" and "Forever Young"), but what I really love is his reworkings of the American standards - "I've Got You Under My Skin," "The Nearness of You," "I'll Be Seeing You," etc.
Rod has got the perfect voice for this stuff. I can see him sitting in a dark, smokey bar, drinking whiskey, smoking a cigarette, and pining for what might have been.
Don't believe me? Listen for yourself.

My Favorite Joke Ever - The Repeat
I blogged this last year for Project Blog, but I don't care if it's a repeat or not. It's my favorite joke ever, so it bears repeating for anyone who missed it last time.
One day a man with no arms was walking down the street and thinking to himself that he really needed a job. He was passing a monastery when he noticed a help wanted sign in the window. Curious he went inside to inquire about the job.
He found a monk and asked him what the job was. The monk said, "My son, it's a bell ringer's position, but I don't think you could do the job." The man replied, "If I can prove to you that I can handle the job, can I have it?" The monk agreed, so they went to the belfry.
The man looked at the bell, looked at the monk, and looked back at the bell. He went to the furthest corner from the bell and then ran at it as fast as he could. He head struck the bell sending forth a beautiful chime, so the monk told him he had the job.
For the next two weeks everything was great. The bell was always on time and the monk couldn't have been more pleased. One day, coming back to the monastery, the monk noticed a huge crowd gathered outside and police all over the place. He hurried over to one of the cops to find out what happened.
The cop told him that apparently someone had committed suicide and took him over to the ground under the belfry. The monk looked down and saw the bell ringer, who had run at the bell, missed, and fell out the belfry to his death. The cop asked him if he knew who it was. The monk replied, "Well, his face kind of rings a bell."
A few days later, the dead man's brother comes and asks for the same job. In honor of his brother, he rings the bell the same way, running head-first into the bell. Unfortunately, tragedy strikes again and this man falls to his death as well. The monk is asked by the police if he knew who this guy was and the monk says, "I don't know, but he's a dead ringer for that other guy."

Winding Down
It is taking me forever to do anything. Typing is a slow process, with many mistakes made. Even just surfing through the webring can take a while. Seven hours left. Surely I can make it.
Need more interesting stuff. I certainly wouldn't want to read me whining that I have nothing to talk about for every post left.
Thanks to all my awesome sponsors, I've now raised $366 and only have $134 to go for my goal of $500. You guys rock!
Next download is so descriptive of everything right now.

Yeah, I love the feeling when my brain slows down the speed of molasses sludge in winter. The sad part is that it's still moving faster than my fingers which means my typing has gone straight to hell. :-)
Thanks for your comment - if you find my really bad puns funny, you must be seriously tired. ;-)
Buns are the lowest form of wheat.
Cheers,
Tish

Inner Geek
Thanks to Jaime, I was able to rate my inner geek.
I was a disappointing Total Geek with a score of 34.12229%. Kind of funny since I was just telling Barrett at the last Technology Bytes post-show get together that I wished I was geekier. Maybe I will look into learning Linux.
Oh, I am so tired. Seven and a half more hours to go, which means we're barely over the two thirds mark. Hopefully the next song will energize me.

I keep saying I'm going to learn Linux. I dl'd Knoppix like over a year ago and haven't even run it yet. ::sigh::
Needless to say, I haven't learned it yet, which is one of the reasons why I only scored 35.89744% on the geek test.

See, all the more reason to hang out at Chez T. Mike can teach you things like Knoppix and all that geeky stuff.
Who is Barrett? And why do you keep talking about him in all of these posts? Huh? Huh? :D

O My God
OMG. I have absolutely nothing to blog about. I can't even find any decent links to post (the last recourse of the desperate blogger).
So, with that in mind, here's the next download.
