The Neurotic Fishbowl Archives: December 01, 2002 - December 07, 2002
Weekend Update
I haven't posted much over the last few days, so here's what's going on with me.
With Christine not working with me, things are pretty busy. I actually felt like shit when I woke up Friday morning, so I took the day off. I slept until like 1:00, spending the day cuddling with the kitty since, now that she uses her box, she doesn't have to stay cooped up in the bathroom at night. I felt much better upon rising, but I've still got a nagging headache. I had killer headaches about four years ago and these kind of remind me of them. I think it's time to see the neurologist again.
Shelli had this wonderful idea and asked me to be partners on it with her. It's called I Wish, You Wish and the concept behind it is that it will be a central location for all blogger's wishlists. Birthdays will be displayed as well making it easy for you to see if there is anyone out in the blogosphere that you need to a get a gift for. Currently the design is broke and there's only a small list of people, but with the help of Wendell we plan on making it database driven and eventually even have automatted sign-ups. It should be a cool project, so be sure to keep an eye on it. Anyone have any feedback or a wishlist (pardon the pun) of features that would be useful?
I've spent the last several days completely amused by Bella. I bought some Keepsake Ornaments from Hallmark Thursday night (damn my ornament obsession!) and brought them home in this big paper bag with handles. I left it in the computer room and Bella has been having the time of her life crawling in it, jumping on it, biting the handles, and just being a complete loon. It's the funniest thing to watch her play with it.
Steven and I are going to be leaving soon to go eat some cheap, delicious Chinese food over at Chinese Cafe. I guess that means I should go get out of my robe and get dressed.

A DVD Winner in The Gold Box
Another purchase made in my Amazon.com Gold Box Offers today.
.: M*A*S*H - Season One (Collector's Edition): I was too young to really get into M*A*S*H and I don't really have any desire to do so now. Pass.
.: Stabila 24680 72" Level for Framing/Trim Carpentry with Hand Holes: I don't really do any carpentry, so going to pass on this.
.: Young Frankenstein (Special Edition): I have heard so much about this movie and from so many people that I bought it to save the extra $2.25. :-) What the hell, it's been on my wishlist so long I figured I might as well. I also bought Cieli di Toscana by Andrea Bocelli to get the free shipping. I gave this CD to my best friend Jeanna last Christmas and she loved it.

Domain Pointing?
I need some help from someone out there with more scripting knowledge I have. I have a friend who has a domain at SWBell. He registered a new domain through 000 Domains, changed the DNS to point to SWBell, and set up a new directory for the new site. Now, the big question is how the hell do you change a .htaccess file to redirect traffic to that URL to the new subdirectory? I found some Redirect Domain Pointer code and tried it out, but nothing's happening. Anyone know what to do next? Help!

Let's see if I understand the problem. He has an existing website, hosted in some directory at swbell. He's purchased another domain, and has another website in another directory on the same account at swbell?
Posted by wendell at December 6, 2002 01:18 AM
If the server is running Apache, then it'll probably need to be configured to recognise the new domain name as a 'virtual host'. Otherwise a browser will try requesting that host from the server and the server will go 'Huh? What am I meant to do with this?'.
As the DNS will just translate www.example.com to an IP 10.0.0.69 , it is up to the server on that IP to decide what to do with it. Unfortently - this usually requires a change in the Apache config (httpd.conf) file: changing .htaccess will NOT help (as the server needs to know which 'virtual host' it is _before_ it can even find the .htaccess file).
If he can't convince SWBell to change the server configuration file (which should take less than 30 seconds), then the only other way would be to use a 'redirect' method as offered by some DNS provides - basically they 'host' your DNS entry and just 'frame' your 'real' site.
(Oh - Microsoft IIS/Netscape IPlanet etc will all need their own configuration changes)
Posted by Richy C. at December 6, 2002 07:52 AM
I was just going to say the same thing - SWBell needs to be told about the new domain so that they can set their DNS server up to handle it. Otherwise it's hitting their servers right now and not going anywhere because SWBell says "who is this?" and doesn't know what to do with it. Also, they may not allow multi-hosted domains. (Several domains in one account.) Some companies do, others don't. Some companies allow domain B to point to the same site as domain A, but not to a separate site.
Confused yet?
Oh, and I don't think all platforms use .htaccess files. If they are running under Windows, then it might not be an option at all.
Posted by Christine at December 6, 2002 02:30 PM
What is the situation with the new domain name? Is SWBell handling the DNS for it and pointing it at the same location as the original domain? I'm using a PHP trick to redirect multiple domains which are all pointing to the same place -- that would work if domain pointing is set up.
Posted by Mike at December 7, 2002 07:37 PM
Redirect / http://www.newdomain.com/
Basically... here is the relevant entry in the Apache manual: http://httpd.apache.org/docs/mod/mod_alias.html#redirect . :)

It's a Group Thing XL

Reasons For Love #9
Every Wednesday those who are involved in a relationship with somebody share a few (simple but significant) reasons for their love. Please keep in mind that this does not have to be a romantic relationship. It can be about a parent, a sibling, a friend, a co-worker, your kid, your dog, whatever.
Stop in here to join the notify list, see who else has left their reasons, and to be added to the blogroll. Also, feel free to save the button below to your server and link it to http://www.neuroticfishbowl.com/reasons.html
I love Steven because...
- When Bella uses her litterbox, he coos encourgement to her and it's just so cute
- He went to Radio Shack Sunday and picked me up The Fast and the Furious body styles for my Zip Zap
- He kept coming into the backroom when I was playing EverQuest to kiss my ears so I would laugh
- When we went out for dinner he told me I was beautiful
- He's been patiently listening to me bitch about some stuff
- He's donating money with me to Heifer International, my favorite charity, for the holidays

The Gold Box
Mostly items of no interest in my Amazon.com Gold Box Offers today, but the movie I was offered did give me pause.
.: Uniden 2.4GHz Cordless Speakerphone (TRU3466): it seems like all the phones in our house are crappy. Either they don't stay charged very long, they get really bad static, or something else goes wrong with them. Maybe it's time to look into getting a different one.

.: Brother MFC-8500 Multifunction Center: this is great, but it would totally be overkill to just have at my house.
.: Logitech MX300 Optical Mouse: this is a great deal, but I just love my Microsoft Intellimouse Optical, so I would rather have it.
.: LEGO Bionicle 3-Pack: Pahrak, Nuhvok and Gahlok: no kids, so not too interested in this.
.: Farberware Classic 13-Piece Cookware Set: this looks like an excellent deal (What a price!), but since Steven already has a cookware set, I'll pass.
.: Rösle Cheese Plane: I love these things, mostly because I love eating cheese. Yum!
.: Swiss Army MiniChamp II Pocket Knife: Swiss Army knives are kind of cool in theory, but I could never see myself owning one.
.: LEGO Storm Trooper (8008): Legos are always cool, but I'm going to have to pass.
.: The Producers (Special Edition): I've never seen this, but the reviews of it were all five-stars. I had no idea this was Mel Brooks's directorial debut and that Gene Wilder had his screen debut in it. I'm very tempted to buy it, but I think I'll pass.
.: Final Run 3 Pack #2: another set of toys I have no interest in.

This-or-That Tuesday
Time for Christine's This-or-That Tuesday:
- Go out and buy gifts, or shop online/mail order?
Mostly online, but there are some things that I get in the store because I see it and think it's a great gift.
- Gift cards/certificates or pick out gifts?
I prefer to pick out gifts, but a few people usually get gift certificates.
- Pay cash or charge holiday gifts?
Usually charge. I don't like to carry that much cash on me and since most of them are bought online, that's not even an option.
- Are most of your gifts mailed or given in person?
Given in person.
- Are you an early-bird or last-minute holiday shopper?
Early-bird. I usually have all my shopping done by the end of the first week in December at the latest.
- If you shop in stores...big chain stores or smaller specialty stores?
Usually big chain.
- Wrap gifts yourself or have them wrapped at the store or mall?
I can't wrap a gift to save my life. I either beg someone to wrap them for me or pay to have it done.
- Shopping on *Black Friday* (day after Thanksgiving)...did you or didn't you?
Didn't. I would never brave that insanity.
- Is your holiday gift list large or small?
Relatively small.
- Is it better to give or to receive?
If it's a good gift - receive! I do love to give presents, though.

Help For Visitors From Google
Thanks to the girls (and guys) over at Scripty Goddess, I found this great little tool, MT RefSearch.
Basically, by adding a php include to your site, people from Google are presented with links to the entries that contain the text they are looking for. It takes a little bit of configuring, but it's super easy to do and very quick to implement.
You can see it in action by going here and clicking on this first link.
Eliot did an excellent job on this and I commend him highly. =)

I tried my own domain and localhost but neither seem to work.
Thanks!

that is tight... I'm gonna have to go home and implement it (although I'm scared that I have so much php going on at my site that people won't link the load lag!)

Hypothetical Question
I have a hypothetical for you people out there. Let's say I know someone who has a hacked satellite card (and no, it's really not me). Let's say they were interested in getting a TiVo. They are worried that, somehow, they will get caught having a hacked satellite card; that somehow TiVo would pass that information on. I say that they can't get caught. Anyone know?

Not the wisest of ventures. I wouldn't recommend it. Of course I am leary of such dealings. 'nuff said.
Posted by Russ Dale at December 3, 2002 06:26 PM
Well, you don't have to worry 'bout the tivo squealing on him(her), but the sattelite companies will flash their cards and basically burn out the hacked ones on a semi-regular basis. (not that I would know that first-hand or anything)

Holiday Catching Up
Wow. I can't believe that it's time to go back to work already. I figured since I didn't post much these last few days, I'd give a quick recap of all that's happened or been going on.
- It appears that Bella has finally decided/learned what her litterbox is for. For the last five days or so, she's used her litterbox to both pee and poo at least a dozen times and all of them have been without us having to put her in the box repeatedly. She's actually seeking out the box and going on her own. Steven and I are so proud of her and it's definitely given me something else to be thankful for.
- I have gotten the majority of my Christmas shopping done thanks to Amazon.com and only have a few people who are causing me to throw my hands in the air because I have no idea what to get them
- I leveled up Ibocea, my EverQuest character, up to level 35. Go, me!
- I had a great time with both my family and Steven's family on both of our Thanksgivings
- Steven and I watched most of The Fast and the Furious with my family on Saturday which made me want to get the body kits for my Zip Zap car. I called the Radio Shack around the corner and they had some. Steven was sweet enough to go over there when he went grocery shopping this afternoon, so now I can make my car all bad ass like the ones in the movie. Woot!
- I had helped my manager sell some stuff on Ebay and I am so excited for him because the guitar that he sold and was hoping to get $250 at most actually ended up selling for $600
I've got some stuff that has to be out by the end of the day on Monday, so I'm expecting the first day back after Thanksgiving to be pretty busy. I got a ton of sleep and relaxed a lot over this holiday, so I feel ready for it. I hope everyone enjoyed their holiday and are ready for tomorrow!

Today's Gold Box
I contemplated buying a few items in my Amazon.com Gold Box Offers today, but ultimately passed on everything.
.: Pfaltzgraff Summer Breeze 4-Piece Stoneware Place Setting: kind of a cute pattern, but it didn't really catch my eye.
.: Farberware Classic 15-Piece Set: nice set, but Steven already has all this stuff.
.: Weber 2281001 Genesis Silver B Propane Gas Grill, Black: looks like an awesome grill, but I bought Steven one a few years back, so we don't need another one.
.: Lentek PC02G PestContro Deluxe: we've been having a really bad ant problem and not only did someone give it a positive review based on their own experiences with ants, but it's safe for pets as well. I will have to seriously consider looking into getting one of these.
.: Weber 1644 12" Grill Brush & Scraper: I've never heard Steven say he needs one of these, so pass.
.: Oneida American Harmony 20-Piece Stainless Steel Flatware Set, Service for 4: I'm just not crazy about this pattern and we don't really need more flatware anyway.
.: Crabtree & Evelyn Cooks Deluxe Gift Set: very cute and I considered getting it for Steven, but I think I'm going to pass.
.: Calphalon Commercial Nonstick Collector's Edition 2-1/2-Quart Saucepot with Lid & Universal Stainless Steamer Insert: Steven doesn't need one of these even though it's a hell of a deal.
.: HoMedics ES-1 Envira-Spa Aroma & Sound Machine: I am very sensitive to scents and lately have been getting really bad migraines because of them. I am almost tempted to buy this and see if using the aromatheraphy when I have a headache would make me feel better.
.: Canon S830D Photo Printer: I have a pretty good printer, though it's been acting up lately, so I am going to pass on this.
