Hakeem The Dream
Steven and I just watched the Rockets retirement ceremony for Hakeem Olajuwon. He's been a huge fixture in Houston sports ever since I can remember (he was playing at the University of Houston known as Phi Slamma Jamma when I was just ten or so). The ceremony was so great and the whole time Hakeem just stood in the background, humble and slightly embarrassed that people were making such a big fuss over him. He's absolutely the nicest man and it makes me so happy to see someone like him succeed in life. Unfortunately, him being the man he is only makes it more apparent to me how thug-like lots of professional sports players really are.
I'm not much of a sports fan, but my hat's off to you, Hakeem. Congratulations on a great career and a wonderful life!

oh yeah, Hakeem is uber-cool. i am, and always will be, a Jazz fan, however one can't help but admire Hakeem from afar for his talent and skills, and for his humble, very human nature.

Back From Austin
Steven and I have been home from Austin for about an hour or so, but I had to catch up on reading e-mails and blogs, so I'm just now getting around to saying hi.
We had a great time in Austin. Steven and I listed to 80s music almost the whole drive up and sang and laughed and just enjoyed being together. UT beat Baylor unmercifully (41 - 0; I felt bad for them) and I loved watching the little bear cub Baylor had bought (the bear is their mascot) sit in a tub of ice and eat it. Too cute. We went to Brick Oven Pizza on Red River and had the most delicious mozzarella cheese covered garlic bread and pizza. We pulled out of Austin about 4:30 which is when I promptly feel asleep. I slept the whole way in to town and it was so refreshing. I've been dreaming almost every night that I am playing EverQuest and I'm getting ready to die, so my sleep has been really broken (I am sad and pathetic; I know it). The nap was exactly what I needed.
Steven and I are probably just going to stay in the rest of the night. He's currently watching the Rockets play and I'm going to surf for a bit and then see if Brian's online so that we can duo for a bit and try to level me up.
Btw, if you haven't visited Robyn lately, you should. She's got a great charity thing going on.

Early Morning Saturday
It's 8:00 AM on a Saturday and yet I am up. Did the world end? No, Steven and I are off to Austin to watch the UT game. I'm a little tired and a little hung-over, but it should be fun. See you kiddies when I return!

Lovely Friday (With Pictures)!
Christine was a sweetheart and treated me to lunch today at Lupe's Tortillas. I posted pictures from our trip over at Picture Fish, so be sure to swing by and see them.
This week was an awesome week. My biggest client was out of town, so that reduced my workload and my stress level a lot. Plus, we have several projects on very aggressive timelines, so all my projects that were waiting on client input pretty much stayed that way.
I've had so much fun playing EverQuest and having a stress-free week, that I am not looking forward to Monday. However, I'm slightly drunk, Steven and I are going to Austin tomorrow for the UT game, and life is good, so I can't complain.
Everyone enjoy their lovely Friday evening!

What's EverQuest like then? I was going to pay the £8 (which is what the $12 something subscription works out to) to have a peek, but I was just wondering if it was worth it. I'm something of an RPG fan, so it looks cool, but I'm not entirely certain. Still, one way to find out eh?

Discovery Friday 110802
It's Friday, so that means time for another edition of Discovery Friday!
.: Apparently Nothing At All - Lor is the person who is kind enough to sponsor Ginger the dog and after reading the page, I wandered over to her blog. Not only is the design stellar, but she just got married, and has the cutest kitty to boot. Great site.
.: Not So Girlie - I found Tash's site this week and immediately added it to my blogroll. Not only is she another cool Texas chick, but she's taking my reading suggestions as well and picking up Guilty Pleasures by Laurell K. Hamilton. Plus, her kick-ass design by Erika rocks.
.: Shamrock Songs - another site that I found through Name That Blog due to the great name. Well worth a visit or two or three.
.: Sometimes I... - I stumbled across Deb's site this week as well and loved her coffee cup image and the name of her site. Yet another Texas lady who reads, this time I picked up a couple of suggestions from her books page.
.: Star Shaped - great site with a wonderful domain name. Have I ever mentioned that I love stars?

hmmm, i picked up Guilty Pleasures and got about 1/8th of the way and then stopped reading it. i can't seem to get into Laurell K. Hamilton's way of vampire lore. i think i'll just stick to Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Linda Lael Miller's vampire series. (i highy recommend her books.)

ooohh, warm and fuzzies! thank you so much:) you've just made my afternoon.
i don't think i've had the fun of pinging anyone yet...i need to give it a go methinks;)
thanks again! and a huge thanks from ginger too;)

I was sent your way by someone over at kadyellebee.com and immediately spotted your Laurell K Hamilton reference. An old girlfriend once gave me 'Circus of the Damned' to read, though I wasn't expecting to like it, and ended up loving it. That was 2 years ago, recently I got hold of 'The Lunatic Cafe' and now I'm engrossed. It's great to find another fan :-)

Gold Boxing Day
A few nice things in my Amazon.com Gold Box Offers today, but nothing too spectacular.
.: Plantronics CS10 Cordless Telephone Headset System: how sad is it that as soon as I saw this I thought it would be perfect for playing EverQuest with Brian on the nights we're duoing and he's at the office and I'm at home?
.: Rösle 10.6-Inch Egg Whisk: I have no idea if we would need one of these or not. I think Steven already has one.
.: Calphalon 32-Inch Straight Wall Rack with 4 Heavy-Duty Single Hooks: someday, when we move out of the world's tiniest condo, this would probably be something we would need. For now, pass.
.: Vacu Vin Food Saver, Set of 4: Steven already has as many of these as he needs.
.: Mikasa Terrazzo Stoneware Creamer: I kind of like this pattern. It's not my favorite, but it's nice.
.: 20" Animal Alley Hopkins the Frog: Pink: cute frog, but vaguely disturbing in bright pink.
.: Dr. No (Special Edition): I checked with Steven the other day to see if these would make nice small Christmas presents, but he said he didn't want them.
.: Mikasa Libretto Stoneware Covered Sugar Bowl: not very impressed with this pattern. It's kind of boring.
.: GoVideo DVR4200 DVD/VCR Combo: just bought a Apex AD-800 Progressive Scan DVD Player from my Gold Box, so I don't need this right now.
.: Windtalkers: I wanted to see this when it came out, but since I never did, I'll hold off buying it unless I find it for $10 or so.

Ginger the Dog Needs Help
While on Robyn's site, I found a sad story about an eldery dog that could have a happy ending.
Ginger is an eldery dog who needs sponsorship at Pets Alive, a no-kill animal shelter. Ginger was taken to the shelter because she was too old to play and needed too much special care. She has lived happily at Pets Alive for many years but in her old age she needs special medication. Ginger really needs a sponsor and All Things Girl has begun fundraising to sponsor Ginger for a full year at least. For more info, please visit Ginger's page or go directly to Pets Alive and perhaps sponsor or even adopt any one of the adorable critters. Every little bit counts and they are a little over 50% to their goal, so please sponsor Ginger.

I actually have the Envision 5100e 15" LCD monitor. I just got it in September for my birthday. It's booootiful, and it's one of the cheapest LCD monitors out there. I got mine at Costco for $300.
BTW, 15" on an LCD monitor == to 17" on a CRT (regular) monitor. What that translates to is that a 15" LCD has a standard resolution of 1024x768 :)
Posted by theresa at November 7, 2002 10:48 PM
oh, one other thing I should mention since I just noticed you play computer games - LCD monitors don't have a very high refresh rate, so that you can get unclear pictures when playing games.
*did her research* :)

Scene in an Office
Scene: my desk, approaching lunch. Christine is sitting a few feet away. I am talking to Brian about EverQuest while waiting on Christine to be done with her e-mail so we can go to lunch.
The phone rings
Christine (answers the phone): Hello. This won't be Christine.
At that point, Brian and I began laughing hysterically while Christine attempts to explain to the client why she just answered the phone as she did. We have now added this to one of our funny phrases and are repeating it around the office. Ah, good times at work.
Update: Christine's phone just rang and I asked her if it was the same client as earlier (we have caller ID) and she said yes. Just as she picked up the phone I told her, "Tell him it won't be you," and she cracked up. She answered the phone laughing to the point of tears. Ah, I love taunting Christine at work some times. =)

Reasons For Love #5
As previously mentioned, Reasons For Love will now be found here instead of at Bea's site.
Every Wednesday those who are involved in a relationship with somebody share a few (simple but significant) reasons for their love. Please keep in mind that this does not have to be a romantic relationship. It can be about a parent, a sibling, a friend, a co-worker, your kid, your dog, whatever.
Stop in here to join the notify list, see who else has left their reasons, and to be added to the blogroll. Also, feel free to save the button below to your server and link it to http://www.neuroticfishbowl.com/reasons.html
I love Steven because...
- He made me sandwiches last night and brought them to me while I played EverQuest
- He is willing to work with me on the whole Bella situation (she's still not always using her litterbox and she's been super hyperactive and a big pain) so we don't have to get rid of her
- When he was in Austin for the last UT game he bought me a UT shirt because he knew I wanted one
- He asked his dad or brother to miss the next UT game so that I can have one of their tickets (they have three season passes) and spend the day with him in Austin
- He was so cute when contemplating the idea of making home-made ice cream

Reasons For Love's New Home
Bea has decided to take a hiatus from blogging for a while, so until she comes back, Reasons For Love will be done right here at The Neurotic Fishbowl. If you haven't seen this meme before, it's kind of similar to Jess's Participation Positives - every week those who are involved in a relationship with somebody share a few (simple but significant) reasons for their love. Please keep in mind that this does not have to be a romantic relationship. It can be about a parent, a sibling, a friend, a co-worker, your kid, your dog, whatever. My reasons will be up tomorrow (along with my own kind of meme "It's a Group Thing"), so be sure to come back and let me know who you love and why!

This-or-That Tuesday
Time for Christine's This-or-That Tuesday:
- Art or science museum?
I've probably been to the science museum more (and definitely the most recently), but I wish I visited art museums more. I'll say science, though, because I love dinosaurs. lol
- Play or watch sports?
Neither. I hate sports.
- Zoo or circus?
Zoo. I love animals and I hate clowns. No contest.
- Theater: film or live on stage?
I would like to visit live theater more (the production of The Lion King that I went to blew a lot of movies away), but it's usually film.
- Rock concert or the symphony?
It's so weird, but I have never been to the symphony. I love classical music, was in band in school, so it's just so strange that I've never gone. I'll say rock concert, but let's make it Sting or Tori Amos.
- Movies: see them in a theater or wait for DVD/VHS?
It used to be see them in the theater, but I hate going to the movies now since someone has always brought their screaming infant or lets their cell phone ring incessantly. It's wait now for the most part.
- Board games or computer/video games?
I love board games, but it's computer/video games that own my soul (Anyone up for a littleEverQuest?).
- Hobbies: crafts (art, cooking, home repair, etc) or collecting (coins, stamps, rocks, etc)?
Collecting.
- Watch TV or read a book?
I do a lot of both, so this is a hard choice. If it was never read a book again or never watch tv again, reading would win out.
- Eating out: fancy, white-tablecloth restaurant or casual dining?
Casual dining.

Another Reason to Support Blogrolling
Here's yet another reason to support Blogrolling:
I have over 120 people linked to me, but when someone new is added, the link is placed in the list at random so I can't always find the new linker. I e-mailed Jason and asked him if there was a way for new linkers to be placed at the bottom of the list to make finding them easier. Literally five minutes later he e-mails me back to let me know it's been done.
I donated for both this site and Picture Fish. If you use his service, why not reward his excellent customer service and send him a donation?

Damn Healthcare Industry
As you might recall from the early days on my blog here, I've had stomach issues for a long time and finally decided to go see a doctor in early March about it. After an endoscopy it turns out I have gastritis (inflammed tummy) and acid reflux. The worst part of this whole ordeal has got to be the screw-ups with my bills.
My doctor is covered under my insurance but the group of doctors he works with is not. Inevitably, the bills get submitted under the group name, not the doctor name, so I have to call both the insurance company and the doctor's office and try and get it all straightened out.
The last go around was for $293 worth of lab work that should have been 80% covered, but of course, was shown as to be my responsibility entirely. The nice lady at the doctor's office finally argued with the insurance people herself and told me not to worry until I saw another bill from them. I get the statement of benefits today and it was like the heavens had opened up. I only owe $42! Yeah! I continue to go through the mail and get to another bill from my doctor for a $200 office visit from February. WTF? They're only supposed to be $15! Upon closer inspection, it too was submitted under the group name meaning that tomorrow I get to start the process all over again.
Since processing claims are these people's jobs, you'd think that maybe one of these might be right. Fucking healthcare industry. I could just scream.

Blogrolling Tip
If you check your stats compulsively like I other people do, you've probably noticed the long URL that you get when someone hits your from their Blogroll. Often I've looked at that URL and wondered to whom it belonged (is that correct English?). Michele, who is not only smart but hot as well, came up with the idea of making a link that says "Me!" and links to your site (additional tip: use a space in front of the M to be placed on the top) so people can see who hit them. Thanks for the great tip, Michele!

Thank you for that tip. And thanks to Michele too. I just did it.

Thanks for the tip. I'd been hitting other sites compulsively through my Blogroll, but no longer. Now I've switched to plain HTML links to other weblogs. The _backup_ function on the Blogrolling site makes the list fairly easy to update. A big benefit of the switch is that my weblog loads faster. Blogrolling was really dragging down pageload time.

Ice Cream Maker, Anyone?
You may or may not have noticed that for two days running I got in my Amazon.com Gold Box offers a Cuisinart ICE-20 1-1/2-Quart Automatic Ice Cream, Frozen Yogurt & Sorbet Maker, White. I was tempted both times to buy it but didn't since we have no room in our miniscule kitchen for anymore kitchen implements and I didn't see Steven having a real desire to mess with it.
Saturday night we were watching a Tivod Good Eats and the subject just happened to be ice cream and gelatos. I mentioned to Steven that I had been offered an ice cream maker that looked just like the one Alton Brown was using. Steven perked up and was like, "Really? How much was it?" so now I'm kicking myself that I didn't buy it.
If anyone gets one in their box and doesn't want to buy it, if you purchase it for me, I'll paypal you the money. I think it was almost $20 off, so I would certainly appreciate it.
Update: Kristine got it in her box, so she ordered it for me and I got to save $10. Yeah! Thanks, Kristine!

They must really be pushing those. I keep getting them in mine, too! Of course, Florida is probably one of the few states in the country besides southern Texas, Arizona, and Southern CA where we'd still need/want one. ;-)

Hey Kymberlie - guess what's in my box today.... its $42.46 for the white one right now. I'll email you too if I don't hear from you by the end of the hour :) I'd be happy glad to get it going your direction :)

Thanks to the intrepid Robyn, I now have permalinks in my archives just like that sexy beast Michele. You can be like us too, if you go here and make the required thirty second change.

Mark, make sure this line is in the right place:
<a name="<MTCommentID pad="1">"></a>
It got me a couple of times. Also make sure it's in your individual archives template and not your comment one.

I had to revert back. :(
When trying to build, I got this error
Building entry '"A Case of the Mondays"...' failed: Build error in template 'Individual Entry Archive': Error in tag: You used an 'MTCommentID' tag outside of the context of a comment; perhaps you mistakenly placed it outside of an 'MTComments' container?
I will take a look...

I got that in my gold box today, too. Even if I had kids I wouldn't wish that on THEM. :-)

I meant to say, I got the Cabbage Patch thing in my gold box.
And now I see that I also got the food processor, can opener, DVD, and mandolin slicer, too. Lucky us!
