Saturday Scruples
Time for Phoxxe's Saturday Scruples!
1. You want to quit a job without notice but you need a good reference from your employer. Do you invent a family health emergency? Honestly, I can never see myself doing this. I would just put in notice and tough out the two weeks.
2. In a parking lot, you accidentally dent someone's car door, do you leave a note taking responsibility? When I was sixteen I did this once and left. I guess it depends on how big the dent is. If you can't even see it, probably not. If it's a little more major, probably, but who can say for sure.
3. You're a homeowner. A group home for mentally challenged adults is planned for next door. Do you sign a petition to stop it? No. I don't think there's any need to stop something like that.

I Forgot To Mention....
I forgot to mention, but with a handy tip from Lynda, my "Subscribe to Comments" script is working perfectly. You're now able to subscribe to comments either when you post or without posting, you can unsusbscribe from the comments e-mail you receive, and there is a subscription manager so you can manage all the posts your subscribed to. It's a cool thing from Scripty Goddess. Check them out some time.

When I drink (which is rare to never now-a-days because I've gotten too old), I'd be more likley to take the shots:-) Or a White Russian! Though Raspberry Pina Coladas are yummy! I never drank/drink beer, just not a malt liquor fan.

Thursday Threesome
Time for Deb's Thursday Threesome!
Onesome. Healthy. Tell us about one thing you did for yourself that's healthy - and not just physical, mental and emotional health matter, too! For mental health I took some gift certificates that Trish gave me and spent three hours getting a facial, sea salt spa manicure, and spa pedicure at Urban Retreat, a day spa here in the area. Physically, I've been drinking at least eight glasses of water a day. I think it's helping me lose weight and I do feel better, though I have to go to the bathroom ten times a day at least!
Twosome. Wealthy. What in life makes you feel wealthy in your heart? Steven, my friends, and my family. It's nice to know you're loved and it's definitely the most important thing in the world.
Threesome. Wise. Share your favorite proverb or motto... or just make one up yourself. Stress can kill a goldfish. It can kill a person too, so try not to let everything get to you. (This, btw, is something I'm trying to do myself.) I just made that up; can you tell? ;-)

Glad To See This
I was glad to see that the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund will be extended to some of the gay men and lesbians who lost partners in the WTC attacks. The article mentions that cases involving heterosexual domestic partners are being reviewed in the same way. What a terrible thing it would be to not only lose your partner, but be denied the compensation that you deserve. I hope these people are taken care of.

I agree...both gay/lesbian people and heterosexual domestic partners should be taken care of here. I, too, hope that these people receive the same compensation that married people are getting.
In fact, I believe that the laws should be changed all around, to protect such couples in a multitude of situations.
Case in point...although nowhere near the magnitude of the 9/11 tragedies...a couple of years before Mike and I were married, but living together, he had a heart attack. I was working as a cook at Applebee's at the time, in fact, was at work when the call came from the hospital. They were nice at first, but once it looked like Mike wasn't going to die, they started getting up my ass to return to work. And I did, but I asked for fewer hours.
The worst thing was when they were ready to release Mike from the hospital...I was supposed to work that night, but I called and told them I would not be able to come in, and I told them why...I had to bring him home, there was no one else to do it, and it wasn't like he could get home on his own.
Yet they gave me all sorts of shit about it...and punished me afterwards by doing stuff like cutting all the kitchen staff but me (including the dishwasher), after I asked for a lighter schedule, since I had to take care of Mike once he got home.
If I had been married to him at the time, I could have busted them...I would have been covered under the Family & Medical Leave Act. But since we were just *shacking up* in the eyes of the law, I could do nothing. I ended up walking out on that job. I could ill afford to do so, but they were torturing me so much, and I felt I had no other recourse.
So yes...domestic partners of any gender/sexual preference should have the same rights as married couples...legally, health insurance-wise, and everything else. Just because some people don't have that little piece of paper doesn't make the union any less *real*.
Posted by Christine at May 30, 2002 01:06 PM
There was an officer here in Tampa who was murdered in the line of duty last year. She had lived with her partner for several years and they even had a union ceremony, but obviously weren't "legally" married. She was denied spousal benefits and the pension plan went to the officer's parents instead. It was a heartbreaking case to watch, and I'm glad somebody is finally getting it right.

Subscription Issues Almost Fixed!
Woo hoo! I fixed the problem with the "Manage Subscription" and auto unsubscribe e-mail links. For whatever reason, the URLs being generated for the subscription manager and the auto unsubscribe didn't have /scriptfiles/ in the path, so they were getting 404 errors. I have noticed, however, that only a few entries in the subscription manager have the actual post title and the direct link to the post next to the entry name. Also, the subject for the e-mails are coming back "[Neurotic Fishbowl] New Comment on " but there is no post title. I'm going to mess around with it a little more and see if I can fix it, but at least the main issues have been solved!

Ya... had one, had two... okay had a lot. Today isn't great. My grandmother died this morning, but I'm more relieved than sad at this point. She's been very ill for very long. Of course a "one of those days" happening occurred this afternoon too. We've been living in our place for over three years with Silverfish bugs. Out of the blue Eradico showed up this afternoon to spray for them. Okay, great, except I was unprepared so a half ass job got done. And in the process they sprayed all my lean laundry and my canned goods with the chemicals. Great! Try to find time to do something, selfish, fun, indulgent (whatever descriptive word you want to use) for yourself tonight! It will help ya ease outta the "bad vibes" of the day:-)

I ended up being a Time Mage. Which was pretty accurate to my personality. My Vice is being distant,detatched... Yep, I can be like that... especially when things get emotionally rough. Unless, it directly involves my own problems with Husband or daughter relationships. Then I tend to be a little overly involved and over-reactive. But, that has only come to pass since I got married last year and gained a stepdaughter to boot.

More Messing Around
I did some more messing around but still can't get the un/subscribe thing quite right. It's picking up skins (and I am very happy about that!), but the auto unsubscribe link that's generated and the "Manage Subscriptions" thing (which is so cool! I saw it in action at Scripty Goddess and it is very impressive) is still broken. I also noticed that all e-mails being generated from the webmaster@neuroticfishbowl.com have a subject of "New Comment on" and then it's blank. Ah, well. People can still post and subscribe and that's the most important part!

This-or-That Tuesday
Time for Christine's This-or-That Tuesday:
- Charcoal or gas BBQ grill?
Ummm, I don't even know how to turn one of these on, much less cook. Either.
- Beach or pool?
Beach! I love the sand.
- Sneakers or sandals?
Sandals. I adore the Karen Scott suede sandals that I got a few years ago from Foley's for about $5.00.
- Sunblock or suntan lotion?
Suntan lotion.
- Iced tea or iced coffee?
Iced coffee! Blech! The only iced tea I like my grandmother used to make me. I've never cared for any others.
- Touristy beach town or quiet camping trip?
Touristy beach town. No way would you ever get me to go camping.
- Theme park or baseball game?
Tough one! I love baseball games at Enron Astros Field, but I love going to Astroworld and riding the rides. I guess baseball game.
- One or two piece swimsuit? (ladies...which do you prefer to wear; guys, which would you prefer a woman to wear?)
Two piece. Especially the ones with the little short bottoms.
- Bicycling or rollerblading?
Bicycling.
- It's 95 degrees outside. Do you prefer to go outside in the heat, or stay in and hide behind the air-conditioner?
As I am fond of saying, the most outdoors I get is the top down on my Miata. Stay in and hide!

Monday Mission 2.21
Since I was lazy and played Zeus: Master of Olympus all day yesterday, here's PromoGuy's Monday Mission 2.21:
1. What happened this weekend that made you smile?
Steven and I had a lot of fun together going to dinner, the movies, and just generally being together. I smiled the whole weekend through.
2. Did you make someone smile today? If not, will you try?
Hmmm. Not really, but I haven't seen Steven yet. I'll give him a massage tonight and that should make him smile!
3. Have you any clothes or accessories you love to wear but just totally embarrass the person you are being seen with?
I don't think so. If so, they've never said anything!
4. What was the catch phrase you said the most in High School?
I can't remember. Probably something completely original like, "Duh!"
5. Who are you remembering this Memorial Day? (or for those not celebrating it, tell me about someone worth remembering)
This Memorial Day I thought about those that died this September 11th.
6. Do you think you are a good friend?
Yes, I do. I listen very well and am very empathetic.
7. (continued from MM 2.20) That outing tonight was a blast ... but that was last call. I totally over did it and shouldn't drive, anything we can do while I try to "dry out?"
Maybe go to the Taco Cabana by my house for some late night munchies and some good talking!
BONUS: Do ya love me, now that I can dance?
Watch me now
(Work, work) Now work it out baby
(Work, work) Oh, you're driving me crazy
(Work, work) With a little bit of soul now

Should I Upgrade? I'm Scared!
Currently on my site I use The Scripty Goddess Subscribe To Comments Script. It's working fine, but when you un/subscribe or leave a post, the new page doesn't use skins and it bugs me. (I am totally anal about my blog. Ask Kristine!) Do I want to be brave and try to make it work with skins or should I just leave it alone and keep it the way it is? I had such problems getting the script to work the first time and it was only with a lot of help from Lynda that it works at all. Hmmm. Be brave or stay the same?
Update: I upgraded, but it's not taking the skins and I get a 404 error on the "Manage Subscriptions" page. Grrrr. At least the un/subscribe and posting capabilities are working. Anyone want to look at my code and fix it? Please? :-)
Second Update: Okay, the skins are working now. Just got to get the "Manage Subscription" thing working.

Cool Mouseovers Using CSS
While visiting Jess, I was very impressed with the uber-cool link mouseovers. The mouseover is actually part of her main image and looks just fabulous. I e-mailed her to ask her how it was done and she passed Shannon's CSS code on. I'm currently using the code on skin number eight, the redcap skin, so check it out if you want to see what I'm talking about. The code to make it happen is:
a:hover {color: #FFFFFF; font-weight:bold; BACKGROUND-IMAGE:
url(http://www.neuroticfishbowl.com/designs/redcap/images/linkers.jpg);}
I may or may not use it on other skins, but it was just so cool I had to know how to do it. It took me just a few seconds to make the image file in Photoshop and only a few more seconds to change the CSS. Thanks, Shannon, for the cool tip!

Have You Backed Up Lately?
There are some hackers going around hacking MT blogs by using some MT files (mt-load.cgi and mt-upgrade.cgi). Please go read the post that Ben made so that you can keep your blog protected. Zalary was one of those hacked. :-( While you're at it, it's probably not a bad idea to do a back-up of your whole site as well. Don't forget, too, to save your MT Templates. I just went into the template section and cut and paste them by hand into Notepad.

Ya we got hacked this weekend... Jenkinsonline is our main site... my blog and my husbands (along with our pics gallery and forum message board) is housed in our website. It really, really sucked. What's even funnier... the hacker posted a reply to my husband's post about being hack... (les.jenkinsonline.net) It is obvious that the hacker wasn't bright enough(thank goodness) to actually gain control of our blogs. He could only lock us out and/or add new posts to them. From the return message, it would seem our hacker is a "no-life" kiddie with nothing better to do. My husband, however, did admit that he learned the lesson of double checking for those "holes" that leave your site open to hacker. He forgot to delete the appropriate file after upgrading MT. OH well, lesson learned... time lost, but not any data or structure. :-)
Posted by Anne at May 27, 2002 09:20 PM
Yay, glad to hear that you were inspired to backup.... It just sucks that anyone was hit by a jerk who has nothing better to do than ruining other peoples hard work.
Another good thing to backup is your db directory. You can just download the whole thing (in binary mode) to your hard drive, and it not only has your posts and comments, but your settings and templates in it, and if you ever had a big error, you could just reupload that directory instead of re-importing all of your posts again and resetting up your templates. :)

Sunday Op-Ed
Time for Chris's Sunday Op-Ed!
1. Painting
What is something that I wish I had talent and could do but I can't? My boyfriend, on the other hand, has amazing painting skills. He has a Nagel that he reproduced hanging above our fish tank and it is very cool.
2. Canada
What is some place I've never visited, but looks really pretty in pictures? On the other hand, I can't stand the cold (if it gets into the sixties in Houston I am freezing), so I don't know if it would be a good place for me to go.
3. Pets
What is something I adore and wish I had more of? Steven and I will get a puppy (probably a schnauzer) when we get a house. I had a russian dwarf hamster in high school and would love to get one again, but I don't see Steven falling for it. Also, when we get a house, we're planning on getting a fish tank around 125 gallons or so, so we'll have more fish too.

Fishless Cycling

Steven spent hours today bleaching the gravel, the plants, and the decorations. It's a fifty-five gallon tank, so it was a big project. We've started referring to the tank as "the death tank" since every fish in it seems to get a bacterial infection. I've been convinced for months that there's bacteria in the gravel, so maybe this will solve the problem. Anyone ever tried a fishless cycling process before? Had any luck with it?

I brim with envy. 59 Diner is on my go-go list because there is NOTHING healthy there and I won't go to non-healthy places until I hit 175.
Stuck at 188.
