Do You Wander-Lust?

I forgot to mention, but I joined Wander-Lust.com this week. It's kind of like Blog Snob, but you can also add a tag at the beginning of each post so that when the Wander-Lust spider runs, content from your blog will be posted on their webpage. I'm still not used to adding the tag, but I'm liking the program so far.

Saturday Scruples

Time for Marsha's Saturday Scruples (on time for once)!

1. a close friend will be interviewed for a job with your employer. he asks you for a list of the questions in advance. do you supply it? Unless I think working with them (for some reason) would be bad for our relationship and if I could get the questions, definitely.

2. you work for an optical store. jimmy has broken his glasses and his parents are agonizing over the price of replacements. a competitor is selling identical glasses for half-price. do you send jimmy's parents there? Yes, yes, yes. I would try and get the boss to match the price first, though.

3. you are a reporter. the family of a murder victim has refused your requests for picture and interview. your editor demands that you keep calling them. do you? No. That's terrible. If I worked for someone who was like that, I would have to find another job.

Makes You Feel Kind of Inadequate, Doesn't It?

While I am happy with my life and feel like I'm a good person and add some value to the world, take a look at what others had accomplished by the time they were my age.

At age 27:

Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. dropped out from his job at General Electric to become a full-time writer.

Henry David Thoreau went off for two years to live alone in a cabin at Walden Pond.

Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first person in space.

Memphis millionaire Frederic W. Smith, whose father built the Greyhound bus system, founded Federal Express.

Scottish botanist David Douglas discovered the Douglas fir.

Ernest Hemingway published his first novel, The Sun Also Rises.

Boston dentist William Morton pioneered modern anaesthesiology after learning that inhalation of ether will cause a loss of consciousness.

Go see what things other people accomplished when they were your age.

Friday Five!

And now, time for today's Friday Five!

1. What is your favorite restaurant and why? It used to be Carrabba's (amazing Italian food), but lately it's been Lupe Tortilla's. They have the absolute best fajitas in the world. They just opened one about five minutes from our place, so it's near by and delicious.

2. What fast food restaurant are you partial to? Fazoli's is my biggest weakness. I love their Submarino sandwiches and their buttery, yummy breadsticks.

3. What are your standards and rules for tipping? I usually give around fifteen percent, but if the waiter has been particularly great, I'll tip a little higher.

4. Do you usually order an appetizer and/or dessert? At Carrabba's we order their calimari, at Lupe Tortilla's I get queso to go with my rice. We do Blooming Onions or wings at and at Red Lobster we get chicken fingers and cheese sticks. We very rarely order deserts.

5. What do you usually order to drink at a restaurant? If I'm not drinking, I order a Coke without ice (I hate ice in drinks). At Red Lobster I get their raspberry piña colada. Carrabba's makes these great drinks called Grand Roman Ritas (margaritas with a shot of Grand Marnier in them) that I just love to get. They are so good and so strong. Anywhere else, it's usually a frozen rita or a piña colada.

Working Up a Sweat

I just got done using my new StairMaster FreeClimber 4600 PT for the first time and let me tell you, it kicks ass! I did forty minutes while watching an episode of The X-Files that I had taped and it was great. I'm still getting used to its levels, so I only burned about 300 calories (usually I burn 230 in twenty minutes) but it is so nice to watch what I want on the tv and not have tons of people around. Very relaxing, in a weird kind of way. I'm starving now, so I am off to get some dinner.

Enjoying the Day

Christine and I went to James Coney Island for lunch today (Yummy!) and after we got done eating we decided to go Wal-Marting. Steven and I leave in ten days for our annual trip to Las Vegas (I can't wait!), but we have no luggage of our own. We always borrow from our parents, which bugs the crap out of me, so I figured it's high time we got our own. While looking for luggage (and finding a nice five piece set for $80), Christine and I found flowers for our desks at work (we actually sit right next to each other and share a common desk area). I bought twenty beautiful Lipstick roses for $15 and she bought some lovely daises. Our desks look so nice! I also got Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure on DVD for just under $10 and we bought a new beta fish since Christine's fish Pixel looks like he is getting ready to move on to the great fishbowl in the sky. All in all, we had a nice lunch and fun shopping. Mikey, I think Christine may even have some pictures to post! :-)

Thursday Threesome

Time for Deb's Thursday Threesome!

Onesome: Red. Color me passionate...what are you passionate about? Lots of things, but mostly stuff like abortion rights, gay rights, and other liberal causes.

Twosome: White. Color me truthful...or is it little white lies? What's the last "little white lie" that's come from your mouth (or keyboard)? I can't really remember, but it was probably something along the line of telling someone they looked good in something they don't. I hate to tell someone that they look bad if they love their outfit. They're happy, so what does it hurt? Usually, though, I am very truthful.

Threesome: Blue. Color me with music...what one piece of music really speaks to you? God, there is so much music that really speaks to me. The first one that comes to mind right now is "Winter" by Tori Amos.

He says...
When you gonna make up your mind
When you gonna love you as much as I do
When you gonna make up your mind
Cause things are gonna change so fast
All the white horses are still in bed
I tell you that I'll always want you near
You say that things change, my dear

Lots of Tori's music speaks to me. When I had just gotten out of a very self-destructive relationship her music helped me learn to stand on my own and to understand that I AM worth quite a lot. Her music helped me find my own way.

Love Star Wars (even though the last movie sucked)? Bet you've never seen it in ASCIImation (animation done in ASCII characters) before. Let's Get Physical!

Steven went to one of the local fitness stores today and bought a StairMaster FreeClimber 4600 PT for our house. We've been talking about getting one and were planning on getting it in the fall but we finally just got tired of waiting and last week decided to bite the bullet and just buy the damn thing. I've picked up a lot of new projects to manage at work and I've been having a lot of late nights at the office. I so do not feel like going to the gym after work, but if I could come home, watch what I want to on the tv, and just stairmaster away, I would be more than happy to do that. The store threw in free shipping and told Steven that if he had a doctor recommend that he stairmaster for health reasons, that it becomes a tax-exempt item. He said go get a doctor's note and he'll refund the tax (almost $200). I am so excited! While I was laid off I had been doing a lot of stairmaster and lost about ten pounds. I've put it back on since I started working again, but I'm hoping to shed the weight once more. Exercise tip of the day: if you do aerobics before eating or drinking anything, you burn stored fat instead of the calories you consumed during the day. Stairmastering for twenty minutes first thing in the day is about equal to stairmastering for forty minutes at night. I'm planning on using the StairMaster now first thing on the weekend to help shed a few extra calories. Yeah! This has totally made my day!

Never leave your IM window open while talking to clients if a little hottie might send you an IM!

Their other Flash movies are pretty funny as well, but I suggest drinking or doing drugs before watching them to get the full effect.

Prepare! The End is Not Very Near!

As some of you may remember from this post, I am convinced that Mother Nature is out to get us. Looks like in 877 years and eleven months she has a good chance of getting us. My boyfriend thinks that the best thing for us (as in planet Earth) would be if an asteroid a little bit smaller than this one hit the planet and caused some destruction, but nothing as big as this one would. Then we might actually start looking out for these things and figure out what to do if one comes too close.

(I actually meant to blog about this earlier, but forgot to since my site went down for a couple of days.)

As Easy As Shaving Your Cat's Ass

My friend Tod at the office was talking to one of his friends about the new operating system for Macs, the OS X. His buddy asked him what he thought of it. Tod doesn't like the new OS (thinks it's difficult to use, etc.) and said, "It's as easy as shaving your cat's ass." (Think about it. It would be hard to shave a cat's ass.) His buddy cracked up and Tod memoralized the phrase by making this spiffy desktop. I have it on my desktop at work. Feel free to make it your own!

I have had five different cars since I got my license at sixteen. 94. My first car was a 1978 Grand Prix. I currently drive a 1999 silver Mazda Miata. 96. My Miata is the first car I’ve ever had a car payment on. 97. The first time I got stopped for a traffic violation, I got a warning. Monday Mission 2.14

Here's PromoGuy's Monday Mission 2.14:

1. When was the last time your computer crashed? What happened?
My computer at home is a complete piece of shit and crashed probably ten times yesterday alone. The last time it crashed I was playing Insaniquarium and had bought one piece of egg and almost had enough money to buy another piece. Three pieces and I would have had a new pet in my tank.

2. Recommend a movie (new or old) for us to watch.
The last time I went to the movies I saw a preview for The Bourne Identity remake with Matt Damon and Franka Potente. Franka Potente was in the excellent German film Run Lola Run that not too many people have seen. It's incredible with a great techno soundtrack that I bought the day after watching it. The movie is an excellent illustration of how a different path (catch the train, don't catch the train, etc.) can lead to a whole different life. Try this one out if you're looking for a hyper kinetic romp.

3. When was the last time someone told you that you were attractive (and you actually believed them)?
I guess the last person that really made it known was Steven's buddy who got totally drunk at New Year's and told me how hot I was. He was really pissed, but I am positive he really meant it. Kind of flattering too, because he's an extremely attractive guy.

4. Do you like to sleep in or wake up with the chickens?
Sleep in! Waking up early is evil. Evil, I say! On the weekends I don't get up EVER until after 2:00 in the afternoon or later.

5. Are you gay, straight or bi? Ever been tempted to go the other way?
I'm straight and currently in a long-term relationship.

6. What will be the next computer-related purchase you will make?
As soon as I get my raise, I am buying a complete new machine. I got a new computer a little over a year ago that one of Steven's friends built. It's run like crap since I bought it and nothing seems to make it stop crashing. Never again will I buy a machine outside of a well-known store without a warranty. I'll probably get something in at least the 1.2 MgHz range with 256 RAM (what I have now). I may even buy a new nineteen inch monitor since my current one is so dark and just will not adjust right.

7. What is your role when you are in relationships? A giver, a taker, or is it an equal balance? I'm a giver big time. I am one of those people that just give love and affection completely. I buy surprise cards, I call for no reason, etc. I just love to love. :-)

BONUS: Would I lie to you?
Look into my eyes
Can't you see they're open wide
Would I lie to you baby?
Would I lie to you?

The Sunday Update

Well, it's Sunday and tomorrow will be business as usual and back to the daily grind. Just like on most my weekends, I didn't do much, but not doing much has made me very happy. :-)

Steven and I had dinner Friday night at Chinese Cafe (Yes, Audra, the one on Belaire. I love their shredded chicken in white sauce and their shrimp fried rice. Yummy, yummy!) and I managed to find some raspberry puree on the way home from work Friday afternoon, so I got some raspberry piña coladas this weekend after all. I spent most of the weekend playing dominoes at Pogo.com and downloading adventures for Zeus and Poseidon by Impressions Games. I think I am ready to become obsessed by it again and lose myself in more Greek adventures.

I am adjusting to the time change, even though I hate it and am not looking forward to it being even brighter when I go to work in the morning. I hate the sun and go no where without sunglasses.

I hope that Christine will have more luck with the php on the server and my skins will be back soon. This plain skin is driving me nuts. I miss all of my pretty fishbowl skins. I have one more that Kristine made and personalized for The Neurotic Fishbowl. I've almost got it tweaked the way I want it. I really need to learn CSS. I spent one day at work when I didn't have much to do going, "Stretch, you damn yellow line, stretch!"

I guess I have rambled enough now that I will go finish watching "The Court." I've been Tivoing it, but just got around to watching it today. Wasn't incredible impressed with the first episode, so we'll see if it remains a season pass for much longer.

Everyone enjoy the little bit of weekend left!

Sunday Op-Ed

I found a new weekly meme - Chris' Sunday Op-Ed.

1) Day Light Savings
What is an awful, horrible thing to do to a person? I hate having to lose an hour of sleep and it's a pain to figure out how to reset the clock in my car.

2) Elijah Wood
Who is an incredible actor that I always knew would be a gorgeous guy when he grew up? Of course, I hated that damn Lord of the Rings movie.

3) Music
What is something that I can't live without? Music has always been entwined in my life. I marched the bass drum and played percussion in high school, have a huge music collection, and love to sing (even though I'm not very good). I love all types of music.

Eight From The Eighties

Better late than never, right? Here's Deb's Eight From The Eighties.

1) Are you true blue? Yes. I am very loyal if you are my friend. I tend to sometimes be more loyal than I should be, but I'm trying to watch that.

2) When's the last time you went steppin' out? A couple of weeks, I guess. I've become such a homebody on the weekends as of late. Late nights at the office, lots of stress, and all I want to do on the weekends is sleep in and do nothing.

3) What's something your parents just don't understand? Why I love movies like Clerks and Pulp Fiction. When I lived at home my mother could never understand why I watched movies with so much cursing and violence.

4) What are sweet dreams made of? A blender of raspberry piña coladas, Steven, and a yummy dinner. I'm easy to please. :-)

5) Are you prone to burning down the house? Yes. I am a total spaz and I can't cook a thing. I would probably burn the house to a cinder if I tried cooking anything.

6) It's the end of the world as you know it. How do you feel? Sad. I happen to like my world and it would suck if it ended.

7) Are you going to Wang Chung tonight? I love that song, so hell yeah, I'll Wang Chung tonight!

8) Why can't I get, just one... ? Deadline at work that I don't have to worry about it being missed.

Saturday Scruples

Continuing my habit of posting late on the weekend, here's Marsha's Saturday Scruples.

1. the only available spot in the parking lot is reserved for the handicapped. you are in a hurry and won't be very long. do you park there? No. Never. I never park in handicap spaces. Once, Steven and I had to run to the office we both worked at really late at night and I got on him for parking in the handicap space even though it was midnight and we were the only people there.

2. you have been attending classes all year. an acquaintance, who rarely shows up, asks to photocopy your notes. do you consent? Well, I was always the person that did this in college, so I would. I never went to class, so I would help someone out since others did it for me.

3. you have a struggling young company. you have to choose between two equal candidates for a job, a man and a woman. The woman will work for $2000 per year less than the man. do you hire her for that reason? If she's got on her resume or told me that she would work for less, I would say yes. Hopefully, we could stop struggling and then I would up her salary.
