The Neurotic Fishbowl Archives: March 17, 2002 - March 23, 2002
Eight From The Eighties
Here's my first of Deb's Eight From The Eighties.
1) You might as well face it, you're addicted to... lots of things, including playing poker online at Paradise Poker, Sweet Tooth and Dominoes at http://www.neuroticfishbowl.com/archives/003109.htmlPogo.com, Beanie Babies, Hallmark ornaments, cotton lingerie from Victoria's Secret, and Coke. Lots and lots of Coke.
2) All I really need to do is find myself a brand new... work-out ethic. Been slacking lately about getting in the gym. Really need to workout harder.
3) Who's the wind beneath your wings? Probably my mother and Steven, my boyfriend.
4) Who gives love a bad name? My old high school boyfriend whom I call Satan, for good reason. After five years he dumped over the phone when I called him from work and refused to help me pay for all the credit card bills that we'd amassed in our time together. Since the bills were mostly in my name, he bailed on them. Bastard.
5) Are you too shy? No, not really. I'm fairly outgoing.
6) Do you work hard for the money? Lately, yes! I picked up a new project to manage and I put in about six hours overtime last week alone.
7) There's something strange in your neighborhood. Who you gonna call? Steven first followed by my mother.
8) Why do I find it hard to write the next line? Sometimes I just seem to have nothing to say that's all that witty or interesting (though one could argue I never do!).

Saturday Scruples
Today I'm doing my first of Marsha's Saturday Scruples.
1. california grape pickers are on strike and organizing a boycott. the store only has california grapes and you want some. do you buy them? Probably. If I was really aware of what the strike was about and thought there was a genuine problem, I wouldn't.
2. a co-worker at a large company is stealing from petty cash. do you warn him to stop? Yes, definitely.
3. you are a policeman. a young punk is running away after robbing a store. your warning shot is ignored. do you shoot to wound knowing you might kill him? Only if he had a weapon or I was worried he was going to hurt someone.

Friday Five!
And now, time for today's Friday Five!
1. What is your favorite time of year? Spring time, followed by fall.
2. What is it about your favorite season that, well, makes it your favorite season? The weather is the nicest at that time of the year (at least in Houston), so that's always a plus. You get lots of pretty, sunny days.
3. What is your least favorite time of year? Why? Winter. Definitely. I hate the cold. I get cold really easy, so I am miserable when it's cold outside. I don't know how anyone can live up north.
4. Do you do anything to celebrate or recognize the changing of seasons? No, but it's such a great idea that I probably should.
5. What's your favorite thing to do outside? I am so not an outside person. My favorite outside thing to do is ride around in my Miata with the top down in nice weather.

Antibiotics in Animal Agriculture
My boyfriend is always ranting about the overuse of antibiotics and how if we keep misusing them we'll never be able to combat disease properly. In his honor I am offering this link so you can urge Congress to protect human health by ending misuse of vital antibiotics in animal agriculture.

Near Miss With an Asteroid
Sometimes I get really nervous about Mother Nature and how sometimes it seems she's just out to get us (read my post Mother Nature is coming to get YOU! to see what I mean). I read an article today about a stealth asteroid that came extremely close to hitting us this week. At least this article made it seem that a major catastrophe like this, a mega-tsunami, or a black hole actually killing us is minimal, unlike The Discovery program and their nature shows of death.

Help Stop a Woman From Being Stoned to Death
In Nigeria a court will decide if a woman accused of adultery will be stoned to death, despite the fact that she claims to have been raped. Her attacker, of course, faces no punishment. Please contact Nigerian officials to help prevent her death.

Maybe it's just the shitty day that I've been having, but I have to point out that the Nigerian goverment won't do anything to help this woman. This happened recently, where a girl was raped by two men, who admitted they had raped her. She was stoned, they were barely chastised -- despite an international outcry.
Sorry, I'm way cranky today. People should contact the goverment; you can't make a difference if you don't even try.

We must stop this evil Islamic fundamentalism. They want to murder these women based on this ancient Islam that calls also for the murder of Christians. If Nigeria persists in this we should also boycot all travel /Tourism to that country/Yes, I'm African American. Again we must stop this atrasity!

I feel this is terrible and unfair treatment of women in your country. Please reconsider her judgment. Let us all pray to be better people that help one another. Jane Murphy
Posted by Jane Murphy at October 9, 2002 10:02 AM
this judgement of condeming this woman to death is ridiculous. What punishment does the man get in this? That poor woman and her child. I hope this woman is spirited out of the country and saved with her baby. These judges that condemn her, let me investigate their life and see what we can find to condemn them to death. FREE THIS WOMAN !!!!!!!!
Posted by at November 16, 2002 08:07 PM
Please do not stone this woman. I bless this punishment away immediately. Remember the commandment - Thou shall not kill. Please consider her little child. In the sight of God, this is very unfair to the lady. FREE THIS WOMAN NOW!

Please stop the violence here. Do not enforce this ruling. It just takes one person to bring a sane solution to this unfortunate incident which would not be served by an act of irrevocable violence.

Indicative of My Week
My week has been filled with demanding, insane clients or clients that totally ignore my requests for months on end. I've been a little high-strung (to say the least) at work these last few days. I was explaining some of my problems to my boss and he looks at me and says, "It's going to be a high volume curse-word day for you, isn't it?" Indeed it was.

As some of you may know, Florida doesn't allow adoptions by gay people. Plese visit Let Him Stay and read the story of Steven Lofton and Roger Croteau and their five foster children. These kids have never known another family, but Steven and Roger can't legally adopt them. My family and I are an emergency foster family. This means we have children stay at our house until they can be put into a long-term foster home or can go back with their parents. We have had two sets of brother and sisters and one two month old baby. Each of these experiances have only been for two months but every time I have had to say good bye it has been extreamly difficult. Even if you have a child for a even a week you can grow really attached. After a while I needed them just as much as they needed me. I can't even imagine having a child stay for 10 years and then have the government take the child away just because of your lifestyle. I think your way of life is not the government's buisness and if you can take care of a child for ten years then you can handle taking care of the child permently.

This-or-That Tuesday
Time for Ashley's This-or-That Tuesday:
- Run or walk?
Walk. Like Val Kilmer says in Real Genius, I only run when chased.
- Thistle or dandelions?
Dandelions. They're prettier.
- Birds singing or crickets chirping?
Birds singing. Crickets are annoying.
- Allergies or none?
Used to be none, but lately I get headaches around some smells. Is that an allergy?
- A, B, C or 1, 2, 3?
1, 2, 3
- "Easy as pie" or "simple as cake?"
"Easy as pie."
- Trampoline or swimming pool?
Swimming pool. I would kill myself on a trampoline. Of course, I can't swim either, so I can kill myself in a pool as well, but I love the water.
- Nickel or penny?
Penny! I used to collect pennies when I was a kid. Love pennies.
- Basketball or baseball?
Baseball, definitely. Love baseball games, especially since Enron Field (or whatever it's going to be called now) is such a cool park. When we were kids, my brother and I were Astro Buddies and used to go to tons of games with my parents and my grandmother on my dad's side. She was a huge baseball fan and I guess we inherited our love for the game from her.
- Sliding doors or French doors?
French doors, I guess. The look nicer, but we had sliding doors all over the place at my parents' house, so they're more nostalgic to me.

Leather Care Tips
Well, I just completely fucked up my birthday evening. Like an idiot (because I am notoriously clumsy about spilling and things of that nature) I decided to do my work on the new leather furniture that we bought in January. I, of course, got a pen mark on the couch. I ran to the computer to look up removal tips, but before I could tell Steven what to use, he'd decided to try finger nail polish remover. It did remove the ink, but it also removed the color from the leather. Now we have a discolored spot on the couch. I've been so careful about not getting anything on the couch and I should have known it was a dumb idea to get on the couch with a pen. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Tomorrow I guess we'll have to see what a leather care place can suggest about fixing the discoloration. Fuck. And that furniture was so expensive, too. :-(
Btw, if you get ink on leather, try hair spray or a pencil eraser. It will supposedly bring the ink right out without damaging the leather.

Flame the Flying Beta
I just finished posting that I was going to watch TV when I stopped in the kitchen to get a coke. I looked at the two beta tanks that are on the counter and asked Steven, "Where's Flame?" I look down in the sink and see him lying in a bowl, not moving. I pick the bowl up and dump him back in his tank and he starts swimming around like nothing has happened. I bought a new beta today (a birthday fish for the birthday fishgirl) and had placed the tanks next to each other so they could puff up and protect their territories (I've read articles that say they're happier when they can do this occasionally). I guess Flame freaked out and flung himself out of his tank. Steven said that it's a good thing I walked into the kitchen since he obviously hadn't been out of the tank that long. Hopefully he won't have stressed himself too much, but it was completely freaky to see him lying in the sink like that! Poor Flame the Flying Beta!

I've had fish since I was 6 until I went away to college and we had several that did the flying leap when we were trying to clean out the tank and they were stuck in buckets for an hour or so. I especially remember the kissing gourami fish that jumped out unbeknownst to me. I found him accidentally when I stepped on him with my bare feet. I quickly him threw him back in the water and he lived to be a ripe old age although with a black splotchy scar on his head... since it was the 80's though, he was named Gorbachev and his friend was named Reagan!

Monday Mission 2.11
Here's PromoGuy's Monday Mission 2.11:
1. As a child, did you ever wish you had a different name, maybe a name you wish your parents had chosen? To what would change it if you could?
Actually, my name is legally Kimberly, but there were four other Kimberlys in my class. I'm an original, damn it!, so when I was about twelve I experimented with different spellings (Kimberlie, Kymberly, and others) until I settled on Kymberlie. It's different and unique, and even though people never get it right, I like it and think it suits me well.
2. What skill have you been wanting to learn but have just kept putting off?
I took a couple of Javascript and DHTML classes last year when I was laid off, but I really need to learn more computer-wise like CSS and PHP.
3. Are there there any regional foods you love but just can't get where you are living now? (burger chain, ice cream shop, etc. that was in your hometown but has no locations where you are today)
When I went to the UK with my aunt and uncle when I was fifteen they had these great chocolate bars that I loved (something with an s or a c, can't remember now). I'm not from the UK, but that's as close as I can get on this question since I've lived in Houston all my life.
4. What recreational activity would you take up if you had the time and/or money?
Hmmm. Does traveling count? If I had more money, maybe playing higher limit poker.
5. What's the biggest lie you've ever told? Has anybody ever found out?
The only thing that I can think of is when my ex-fiance and I broke up when I was twenty and I was so depressed that I couldn't even get out of bed. I would tell my parents that I'd gone to school even though I basically missed the entire semester (we broke up like two weeks into the term). I think my mom knew, especially when my grades came in and they were all drops.
What was your favorite Saturday morning cartoon when you were growing up? I used to love Penelope Pitstop and the Wacky Racers. There was another cartoon that came on that had something to do with monsters, but I can't remember what it was.
Let's say one of your relatives slipped you a $100 bill, to help you out for the month. Your significant other didn't see it, would you tell them or keep it to yourself? Tell him since Steven and I don't really share money. He'd be happy for me and not expect me to share.
BONUS: Whatever happened to Saturday night?
Finding a sweetheart and holding her tight?

Weekend Break
As some of you may (or may not have) noticed, I took the weekend off from blogging. My site (along with a couple of others) went down Friday night and by the time it came up on Saturday, I'd already spent a solid day playing http://www.neuroticfishbowl.com/archives/003109.htmldominos at Pogo.com, reading (I've already finished Seven Up by Janet Evanovich), and conquering the world on Civilization: Call To Power, and drinking blenders full of raspberry piña coladas. In other words, I'd lost the ability to be coherent and blog at the same time. ;-) I am back now and plan on catching up on some blog reading and posting later today. Right now, though, I've got a big meeting to go to, so everyone enjoy their Monday morning (at least as much as it's possible to enjoy a Monday morning).
