Friday Five!
And now it's time for today's Friday Five!
1. What's your favorite vacation spot? The only vacation spot that I visit with any regularity is Las Vegas where we stay at The Bellagio. I love it there.
2. Where do you consider to be the biggest hell-hole on earth? When I was about twelve, my brother and I made it to the state finals in bowling (I know, I'm a dork) and it was held in Lubbock, Texas. Maybe because I was only twelve, but the place was just awful. Nothing to do, no where to go, it sucked. My answer would have to be tiny Texas towns.
3. What would be your dream vacation? Two weeks (or more!) at Atlantis, the luxury resort in the Bahamas. We saw a special on it on The Discovery Channel and that place was incredible!
4. If you could go on a road-trip with anyone, who would it be and why? I would go with my best friend Jeanna, probably to Galveston. We go there every now and again and just have the greatest time. We are absolutely identical in personality and have the best time together, no matter where we go.
5. What are your plans for this weekend? Tonight we're going to a local country and western bar with a bunch of people from our dance class. We were going to go to a club tomorrow night with a bunch of friends, but considering how bitchy I am, we'll probably just blow it off, drink raspberry piña coladas, and watch The X-Files on DVD or something equally exciting. :-) Sunday will be for catching up on shows on the Tivo and maybe working on a spring skin for the site.

An Irritable Fish
I have been absolutely irritated by everything today - the co-workers that drink the last Coke and don't put more in the fridge, my brother and his unrealistic expectations of life, my idiot clients, and more. I'm sure part of it is hormones at work and that I have that damn endoscopy procedure Monday. I just want to kill someone or break something. Grrrrrr.

Your Whole Life Is Leading Up To This.
In case you didn't know, the second season of Six Feet Under starts this Sunday. If you haven't seen it, HBO's been rerunning the first season and you can probably catch most of the shows before the new season starts. It is absolutely the most incredible show on television and I was thrilled when it won two Golden Globes, including best television drama. It's written by the Alan Ball, who also wrote the screenplay for American Beauty. The show itself is about a family that runs a mortuary, but that's like saying American Beauty was about an American family. I had watched the first three or four episodes without Steven when one of his co-workers raved about the show to him. He caught them in reruns with me and became instantly hooked. I was so glad he liked it. Meant I didn't have to dump him. ;-) Anyway, catch the show if you have HBO. You'll be glad you did.

EZKym.com
Tonight the online focus group that I participated in was about hosting and domain registration. One of the questions was, "After you did a search for the domain you wanted, what would you expect to see on the results page?" I answered that I would expect to see if the domain was available and possible variations in case it was taken. I suddenly thought back to when I registered kymberlie.com. I did the search, was told the domain was available, and presented with a list of other possible domains. Some of them were pretty standard - ekymberlie.com, ikymberlie.com - but then I get to ezkymberlie.com. I started cracking up. EZKymberlie.com. Yes, that's what I want for my web presence! I shared the story with some of the people that I worked with at the former.com company and from that day forward, I was EZKym.

How Fragile They Now Seem...
Dawn saw five fire trucks in front of the Sears Tower today and immediately thought, "Now what?" Today as I was coming out of the gym (it was very cloudy out), I had similiar thoughts. I looked up to see a plane coming in low overhead. As I watched the plane break through the clouds I thought to myself, "They never used to look fragile. I never would have pictured them falling from the sky." I grew up in the flight path of Intercontinental Airport in Houston, so I've seen millions of planes, but they look so different now. I wonder how long it will be before we're able to look at them like we used to. Or if that will even be possible.

I think so. Humans are amazingly resilient. The funny thing is, we live next to a weird 'airplane-friendly' neighborhood, which has a landing strip in it and you can fly small planes out of. They literally fly into their own neighborhood, drive their planes around on over-sized streets, and park them in their oversized garages. Weird. :)
Posted by todd at March 1, 2002 12:24 AM
I really know how you feel. I live close to Kennedy airport, and I have spent my entire life craning my neck to look up when a plane zooms overhead. I used to be in awe of them, especially the Concorde.
Now, not only do they seem to be flying even lower (I swear I can make out faces in the windows) but they give me an entirely different feeling. No matter how many planes shake and rattle my windows during the day, no matter how many times I am driving and feel like a plane is going to swipe the roof of my car, I still get chills and a feeling of dread. They are no longer big, beautiful machines to me. They are things to be feared.

I Hate Telemarketers!
‹rant›I'm sitting here doing my online focus group and already three telemarketers have called. The last one kept asking when Steven would be available and would not let it go. Has anyone tried The Telezapper? If it works, I would buy one in a heartbeat. We stay up really late during the weekends (well, all the time really, but I digress), so if you call my house before noon, I want you dead. Don't call me! Ever!‹/rant›

I found a way to stop telemarketers in their tracks. It is an audio call screener called SelfAnnounce. It requires callers to announce themselves over a loud speaker so you don't have to get up to answer the phone if you don't want to. Haven't had one commercial interruption since I got it. Read all about it at SelfAnnounce(dot)com.

Stained Glass
I am pleased to present another new skin, one that I think is just beautiful. As many of you probably know, Mena offers, from time to time, a coloring contest where participants take a black and white .gif and use something like Photoshop to color it. I went to go view the entries to the lastest contest and absoultely fell in love with the winning entry. April's entry was so beautiful that I had to e-mail her and ask permission to make it into a skin. She was so sweet and granted me permission. After tweaking it all day, this is the result. Please go take a look and let me know what you think. I'm really proud of it. :-)

I feel that I'm being descriminated upon because of my X-wife. Recently my property was written up because I have a tent trailor parked on the front side. Initially she [city employee] called it a utility trailor, but now it it's my tent trailor. This person that sent this, works for the city, but lives on the same street as my X-wife. The issue is that people have large boats, campers and utility trailors parked in their drive ways, yet they haven't been written up. This person has singled me out and is now harassing me. I recently had a triple by-pass and this harassment has effected me. I'm also over 55, so maybe its age descrimination as well. Any help with this, they are now threatening to fine me. An upset Mesa, Az resident. If everyone was written up this wouldn't be an issue, but they haven't !

Odd Todd
I found out today that Odd Todd (another unemployed dot.commer) was busted by the New York Labor Department (free registration required at The NY Times to view the article). I feel for Todd and left him $5.00. I hope that he doesn't end up losing his money to The Man. Like it isn't shitty enough being unemployed (the part where he talks about not being able to sleep at night resonated strongly with me), now you have to get in trouble for being successful in getting donations from people. If he was actively looking for a job and has the documents to prove it, they need to back off of him. Poor Todd.

My Gay Straight Boyfriend
My boyfriend Steven is one of those men that you could describe as a gay straight man. He's very particular about decor, he has more fashion sense than me (not that that's probably saying much, though), and he loves to cook. Last night I'm talking to Christine on the phone when I here this funny clicking noise, like someone is stirring something really fast. It goes on for a couple of minutes, so I call into the other room, "Honey? What's that noise?" I hear back, "I'm making something from the Food Channel." My curiosity piqued (other Food Channel tests have lead to him making the best made-from scratch pizzas, calzones, and piña coladas), I walk into the kitchen to find Steven making mayonnaise. He accidentally put too much salt in, but it totally cracked me up that he was making mayonnaise by hand! On a side note, he also brought me flowers last night because he said it looked like I'd had a rough day. He is just too cute some times.

Ireland - An Islamic Country?
I happened to click on one of my BlogSnob links today because it was entitled Religion - All the thoughts left unsaid and I thought it sounded interesting. So I go visit his site and find this post (quoted from below):
To the best of my knowledge, there is no other terrorist group associated or affiliated with a major religion--nay for a few blow-up-abortion-doctor-people.
Now, I'm not forgetting about the crusades either...that was entirely our bad.
Now, the first thing I thought of when I read this is, "Um, ever hear of Ireland?" I didn't realize the IRA was Islamic, though I guess that could be what the I stands for. I'm not saying that a lot of terrorist activities aren't tied to Islamic organizations, but to say that all religions but Islam (with the exception of the crusades) have nothing to do with those kind of activities is completely wrong. In Ireland Catholics and Protestants are killing each other, not Muslims killing them. Religion is probably the biggest reason that people kill each other and I mean all people, not just Muslims. It just bugged me that he didn't have any place to leave comments and I couldn't just leave a little note saying, "Ireland - that's an Islamic country?".

Yes, but unlike the Islamic Fundamentalist, the IRA might have a good reason for protecting their culture and soil from the Brits. I mean, messing with Guiness pouring methods? If someone were to mess with McDonalds here, there'd be cruise missiles filling the air faster than you can say Jack Robinson.
Posted by file13 at February 27, 2002 11:49 AM
You might want to read a bit more about the history of Northern Ireland. It's not a "religous war", Catholics and Protestants don't hate each other because of relgious differences there, most don't give a care either way. But the history has a catholic country being invaded by a protestant one (England) and the English leaving their Protestant cousins to "oversee" the Catholics. So it is a bit different that a truly religous war, which is what Islamic extremists seem to want to fight.

dammit, i shoulda listened to Christine. but no, i kept reading after Dub (my hero). i love how she wants to blame all islamics for the actions of a few terrorists. is she forgetting that the religion that's most prevalent in the world is Islam? and by that same rationale, can't we blame all christians for abortion clinic bombings?
Posted by mikey at February 27, 2002 12:54 PM
I can honestly say that I am studying the Irish Catholic, and Irish Protestant ideals of things. It seems as though there was a lot of social boundaries for the two peoples if they were in the wrong area. It was almost racial, the bonds of hate were so strong against one another. Seeing as how Christianity in itself is the worlds most popular based form of religion, these two peoples live neck to neck because of the simple form of their religion. As viewed in something that would be more commonplace, such as Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt, you see that the family was looked down upon for being Catholic, and being Protestant all at once. Perhaps someone should look at these things before they make their own opinion on these things. The facts are simple. Irish killed one another while still fighting with the English over the simple idea of religion.

What a Day!
After spending most of yesterday looking for images to make new skins and creating skin number four (it's now up and running in the skin selector, though it may get some more tweaking), I spent part of today messing around with CSS and trying to get the pear-flavored skin (number three) to look exactly how I want it. I finally get it right and upload the files, only to have them magically disappear on me. Christine got back from her meetings out of the office today to tell me that the pear skin is set up through MT so every time I made or changed a post, it reverted back to the old code. Doh! At least it is fixed now (though you get a tiny bit of sidescroll in 600x800 and it is not Netscape compatible).
I also had to leave work early today to go see the doctor. The good news is I don't have to have a colonoscopy, but the bad news is I do get to have an endoscopy to examine my esophagus bright and early Monday morning. I am very nervous about medical procedures, so we'll see how much of a nervous, thudding goat I can be by Monday. Blah. At least I got third in another Paradise Poker tournament, keeping my winning streak alive.

I thought you were going to be a good girl and save the money? That's what you said yesterday... *giggle*

I did say that, but the siren song of temptation called too strongly to me. :) At least I got lucky and managed to place!

Tuesday's Child Is...
In honor of today being Tuesday...
What day are you?
Of course, whenever I hear "Tuesday's child is full of grace," I immediately think, "My ass!" I am constantly spilling things and I must admit the big reason I don't like stairs is because I have fallen down a few flights of them in my time. Does anyone's day truly reflect their personality?
Note: After looking my boyfriend up, it says he was born on a Saturday ("Saturday's Child works hard for a living"). His reflects him pretty well.

I've always loved this poem as a child... I'm a Thursday's child who has "far to go"...
Posted by cybertoad at February 27, 2002 05:43 PM
I don't really think that the rhyme is actually about having been born on a specific day of the week... Suppose that Monday is symbolic for early childhood, Tuesday for teenager, etcetera.
Saturday's Child would then be trying hard to keep alive. And Sunday's Child?
Oh well, I don't know...

This-or-That Tuesday
Ashley's This or That Tuesday:
- Dial-up or cable? Cable! After being on a cable modem, I could never go back to dial-up.
- Wal-mart or K-mart? Wal-Mart. There's one not too far from my house and I think they tend to have a better selection of stuff than K-Mart.
- Butterfly or dragonfly? Hmmm. I like both, but if I had to pick, I'd choose butterfly.
- Plus or minus? Plus.
- Liberal or conservative?Liberal. Big time.
- Do you believe in God or not? Yes.
- Sun or moon? Moon. I cannot go outside during the day without sunglasses. I am very light sensitive, plus I just feel drawn to the moon and find it incredibly beautiful.
- Do you exercise regularly or not? Yes. I go to the gym three or four times a week and Steven and I are planning on buying a StairMaster FreeClimber 4600 PT some time later in the year.
- Coffee or tea? Blah. Neither.
- St. Patrick's Day or Easter? I could give or take either of them, but St. Patrick's Day means my birthday is tomorrow, so St. Patrick's Day!

Last question: I'd switch the two. I'd nail a leprechaun up on a cross, steal his pot of Gold, and then take Jesus out to get drunk with his apostles.

Speaking Of That Skin...
I am currently messing with the new skin and it is FUNKY! It's skin #4, so just ignore it for now. Thanks!
Update: The skin itself is working now, but I need to go in and tweak the colors. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know!

Looking For an Image...
I've been going skin happy lately (and should have a new one to unveil either today or tomorrow) and I want to make a spring theme, but I'm having a hard time finding any garden images or flower images that I don't have to pay for that I like. Since I just blog for fun, I can't really afford to spend money on a new skin. Anyone got any good places to find free images at?

I have a couple flower sets on my page (http://love-productions.com/graphics/setlist2.html) - check out clover and apple blossom and maybe even the ivy green one :) If you want to use either of them, I'd be happy to convert them over to MT code for you :)

Monday Mission 2.8
Here's my first Monday Mission by PromoGuy.
1. What part of your body would you most like to change? Explain.
I would most want to change my hips and stomach. Coming from a line of German women, we're built to give birth in a field and go right on working. I would love to have a flat little belly and hips that are a little less wide.
2. What are the Blogs you absolutely must visit each time you log on, no matter what?
Christine's, Michele's, and Candi's to start. Now that I'm starting to blog, there are several that I have taken to reading each day, pretty much all of them in my list of Other Fishbowls.
3. What part of your (current or most recent) significant other's body would you most like to change?
Hmmm. This is a hard question. I don't really have anything that I would want changed, but I guess he could always be a bit more buff. :-)
4. At what age would you consider yourself as "old?"
Now that I am approaching thirty (I'll be twenty-seven in a few weeks), an age that I think no one ever really thinks they'll be, I'm not really sure. I used to think that someone in their forties was old, but now I have good friends that are in their forties and fifties. I guess age is relative.
5. I hear many stories about children who show potential in a certain area, only to have their spirits crushed by parents or teachers because they are told they aren't doing it right, or will never amount to anything. Was there a point in your life where you feel like you were discouraged in some manner that had an effect on your life?
I'm not sure I ever really had this happen. I was told by my teacher when I was in Tier 4 math in sixth grade (which is two or three years advanced) that girls didn't need higher math class and he basically forced me out. In high school, though, I took advanced calculus and was constantly encouraged by my teacher Mr. De Fazio. As a matter of fact, the first test that I made a B on (and a high B at that), he circled the grade and wrote underneath, "I knew you could do it!" I was so proud of myself.
6. Eek! I left home without my Visor today, I feel nearly naked! What item(s) make you feel naked when you walk off and forget them?
I HAVE to have a book on me at all times. Other than that, I feel weird if I forget to wear earrings or my thumb ring. I've started using my Palm Pilot a lot more, so I'm starting to miss it if I leave it somewhere.
7. I believe we are all artistic in some form or fashion. Not just limited to drawing or painting, but carpentry, baking, music, gardening, collecting, you get the idea. What is it you do that best expresses your artistic side?
When I was in high school, I would have said music. I loved marching band (I marched the bass drum) and being a percussionist. Now, I guess it's more by messing around on the computer with things like Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro. I'm definitely not all that incredible at it, but I enjoy it and sometimes I make something that I think is really nice.
BONUS: Stop, hey... what's that sound?
Everybody look what's going down.
