Demand Emergency Contraception Over-the-Counter
Emergency contraceptive pills meet all the requirements set forth by the FDA to be an over-the-counter drug, but currently you can only get them by prescritption only. Since these pills are most effective when taken with 72 hours of unprotected sex, failure of birth control, or sexual assault, requiring a prescription before use makes the pills almost useless. Please take a moment and let the commisioner of the FDA know that a change in these pills status is needed.

hey, have you seen the new ads for the birth control patch? Its a sticker-type thing that you change once a week and then you don't have to worry about taking the pill every day. I think that's kinda a cool idea! :)
Posted by kristine at September 14, 2002 08:27 PM
Just what are the requirements for an over-the-counter drug? Where are they spelled out, on the FDA web site somewhere?
Posted by Jason at September 15, 2002 12:25 PM
The "morning after" pill is a very high dosage of hormones that makes you extremely ill, vomiting, headaches, cramps, the whole works. I wouldn't want someone taking it without the advice of a doctor, especially because it's used in cases of sexual assault, when it's necessary to see a doctor. If it was sold over the counter, there's the risk that people would use it for regular birth control when they had unplanned, unprotected sex without realizing the extreme side effects.

Save Sea Turtles and Manatees in Puerto Rico
Mega resorts in Puerto Rico are threatening to develop some of the last stretches of tropical coastline, publicly owned land known as the Northeastern Ecological Corridor (NEC). The NEC is home to sea turtles, manatees and rare tropical birds, but it is not a nature reserve protected by Puerto Rico's government. Please urge the Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts, Marriott International, Scotiabank and Banco Bilbao Vizcaya not to build more unnecessary tourist resorts.

Help Prevent Amina Lawal Kumari's Stoning Sentence
An Islamic court in Nigeria rejected an appeal from a single mother, Amina Lawal Kumari, who was sentenced to death by stoning. She was found guilty of adultery last March after giving birth to a child outside of marriage. The courts have decreed that as soon as her child is weaned, the sentence is to be carried out. Please urge Nigerian officials to prevent the courts from killing her.

I am not sure what I can do to speak out against Kumari's death sentence. A friend of mine told me that she was already executed, so that shows how difficult it is even to obtain correct information. I wrote to congress, but I want to do more. Does anyone have any suggestions? That is, if the death sentence wasn't already carried out.

We can avoid this extreme atrocity with Amina Lawal and women in general and we must do it. Itâ™ s to hard to believe that a woman who gives life to a child would actually be senteced in death because she is not in marriage. In my country this is a crime. I know that the laws in Nigiria are different and we have to respect them but this has nothing to do with justice. I am really sorry for living these situations in our days.s

Help Stop Ocean Floor Strip Mining
Thanks to destructive fishing practices like bottom trawling, we're destroying ocean habitat faster than it can possibly regenerate. Please take a moment to urge your representative to co-sponsor the Ocean Habitat Protection Act. This bi-partisan bill will restrict the use of commercial fishing gear that demolishes vital habitats, and will encourage the use of more sustainable fishing gear.

Demand Insurance Companies Cover Contraception
The Equity in Prescription Insurance and Contraceptive Coverage (EPICC) amendment would establish equitable coverage for contraceptive prescriptions and related medical services. Contraceptive equity means that if a health plan covers prescription drugs and devices, it has to cover contraception also. Right now women pay on average 68% more out of pocket for health care expenses than men. Tell your senators that you think it's time health care became more fair and urge them to support this important piece of legislation.

Why is it the Federal government's job to mandate such coverage? What about a Catholic or Christian organization that believes contraception is a sin? Should they be forced to cover BC pills?
Posted by Jason at July 25, 2002 11:59 AM
Then their members don't need to get the prescriptions for birth control. But their insurance should still offer the option, because in the end it should be up to the individual, not an employer or an insurance company to determine whether or not I should take the pill or use an alternate form of contraception.
Posted by Christine at July 25, 2002 12:32 PM
Separation of church and state, dude. Embrace the concept. I've never known my church to be required to cover birth control pills and insurance companies should not pass judgment on a person's right to choose. If you don't believe in birth control, then don't exercise that option under your insurance. Where's the conflict?
Posted by Trish at July 25, 2002 02:14 PM
Nobody has addressed why the Federal government should be involved. I maintain it's none of their business. They have no right to tell anybody what their insurance plan should and should not include.

Heifer supplies poor locations around the world with a gift animal - goat, llama, water buffalo, rabbit, etc. The people of the region are taught how to care for the animal. The animal supplies the people with food, milk, eggs, items like fur that can be sold, and more. The people are then required to give some of the offspring to another family or group of people in need. They in turn do the same. By teaching people how to become self-reliant and having them help others, Heifer has assisted millions of people in become healthy, happy individuals that can stand on their own two feet. Maybe it's just the shitty day that I've been having, but I have to point out that the Nigerian goverment won't do anything to help this woman. My family and I are an emergency foster family. This means we have children stay at our house until they can be put into a long-term foster home or can go back with their parents. We have had two sets of brother and sisters and one two month old baby. Each of these experiances have only been for two months but every time I have had to say good bye it has been extreamly difficult. Even if you have a child for a even a week you can grow really attached. After a while I needed them just as much as they needed me. I can't even imagine having a child stay for 10 years and then have the government take the child away just because of your lifestyle. I think your way of life is not the government's buisness and if you can take care of a child for ten years then you can handle taking care of the child permently.

I feel that I'm being descriminated upon because of my X-wife. Recently my property was written up because I have a tent trailor parked on the front side. Initially she [city employee] called it a utility trailor, but now it it's my tent trailor. This person that sent this, works for the city, but lives on the same street as my X-wife. The issue is that people have large boats, campers and utility trailors parked in their drive ways, yet they haven't been written up. This person has singled me out and is now harassing me. I recently had a triple by-pass and this harassment has effected me. I'm also over 55, so maybe its age descrimination as well. Any help with this, they are now threatening to fine me. Some of you may have seen the story about Colin Powell urging people who have sex to use condoms. Of course, he's getting a lot of heat for this stance. If you would like to, go tell Colin Powell thank you for taking a stand for responsible, comprehensive AIDS prevention. I know that abstinence is the only way to be totally safe, but to preach it only and stick your head in the sand and ignore that lots of people are having sex seems silly. Btw, this website is great to let those in power know of your thoughts. If you are of the feminist persuasion, that is. :-)

I thought I would share with everyone the charity links that I click every day. There is The Hunger Site, which also has links on the page to The Breast Cancer Site and to The Rainforest Site. By clicking this link you can help the hungry, help poor women get breast exams, and help save the rainforest. The next site is The Ecology Fund. This site allows you to contribute to seven different projects including save the South American rain forest, protect endangered Mexican Wildlife, and protect natural reserves in Scotland. Next is a group of sites: Care 2's Race for the Rainforest, Care 2's Race for the Big Cats, Care 2's Race for the Panda, and Care 2's End Breast Cancer. It only takes a minute or two to make these clicks, so try adding them to your daily stops.
