Make Love! The Bruce Campbell Way
On Wednesday, July 6th, Bruce Campbell, the star of such cult classics as The Evil Dead, Army of Darkness, and The Adventures of Brisco County Jr., will be in town signing his latest book Make Love! The Bruce Campbell Way before showing his new movie "Man with the Screaming Brain" at the River Oaks Theatre. I missed him when he was in town signing If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a "B" Movie Actor and I've regretted it ever since.
Bruce is talking and doing a Q&A at 6:00, with the signing around 6:40. "Man with the Screaming Brain" will then be shown at 10:00. More information can be found at the Murder by the Book signing page. Seating is limited for the speaking engagement, so I'm going to try and arrive around 5:00 or so.
If anyone is interested in going, e-mail me at kymberlie AT neuroticfishbowl.com so I can keep an eye out for you.

Like My Body?
I never watch award shows, those watching the American Music Awards last night got to see Anna Nicole Smith introduce rapper Kanye West smashed out of her gourd.
Luckily, thanks to the Internet, you can watch it here. Apparently she flubbed her lines because of bad eyesight not because she was drunk or on drugs. Yeah, I talk like that when I don't have my contacts in too.
And after a bottle of vodka.

Amazon.com Associates Change
If you're like me and have an Amazon.com Associates Account, you've probably done all your shopping through your own referral link. However, they've made a change to the rule that now you don't get credit for anything you buy through your own links. (I figured this out when I had almost $20 deducted from my account. Ouch!) Feel free, then, to shop though this link or through the Amazon.com search box located in the sidebar.
Just a little public service announcement from me to you.

Actually, that's been a rule for a very long time and the penalties for getting caught range from having those earnings removed or getting removed from the program yourself.

Yeah, I buy through another bloggers and she buys through mine. We've had that deal for about a year and half now.
Posted by kat at November 8, 2004 02:00 PM
Yeah, every once in a while, it gives me my credit, but its not supposed to. Like it gave me commision on a few of my christmas gifts last year, even though I paid for them.
I'll have to remember to use your link this time so at least somebody gets credit :)

What did the five fingers say to the face? SLAP!!! Darkness, everyone, darkness is spreadin'!!! Rick James was the man at what he did best, that's for sure, and I will gladly say that phrase simply because it's funny as hell, and it represents who Rick James was as an artist and person, and that's really what we will always remember about him. I'M RICK JAMES, BITCH!!! Show me your titties, do somethin'!!!

Or it's after the computer company. My brother got away with naming his dughter Mackenzie - Mac for short (yes, he's a Mac user). His wife refused to let him name their new son Gibson however (you guessed it - he plays guitar)

Posted by rachel at May 15, 2004 08:16 PM
What IS it with people who give their kids stupid names?
Money or no...it is hard enough to be a kid, especially when it's time to start school. Being saddled with a stupid name just makes it all the more harder.
Too many Hollywood celebs see baby = fashion accessory. They seem to think it's cute to give it some dumb, trendy sort of name.
I also read an article in which Gwynnie is bashing working moms. Well...must be nice to be rich enough to be able to stay at home. But many parents can't afford that luxury.
Posted by Christine at May 18, 2004 02:38 AM
Hi. Just wanted to note that if she puts an 'i' at the end of her name, she can be an Apple Martini! HA! I crack myself up.
Posted by Elaine at May 18, 2004 07:01 PM
I've seen alot of women out there who invented new names for their child that aren't common, they dont' get critized for that. COuld it be the reason she named her daughter Apple because she liked that name? like some of you named your child with a new name because you liked it? there is nothing wrong wtih finding a new name for your child that you happen to like the sound of that name. you need to stop thinking of that name as a fruit, but a name istelf. Appreciate the name Apple as something new and acknowledge that it's somethign new. you're welcome to nam your child anything you want but please treat Gwynnie the same respect that you get for making up a new name for your child okay? Thank you.
Posted by you dont' need to know at May 23, 2004 02:57 PM
Apple is one of the most stupid, ridiculous, goofiest baby names that I have ever heard or read about in my entire life. It is also mean to do this to a child because a child should have a serious, decent, and normal name. Think about how the child will be introducing themselves to people when they are at school (including trade school and/or college), applying for jobs, getting a driver's license, renting or buying a home, opening up bank accounts, voting, running for public office, serving on juries, investing in the stock market, socializing with people, shopping, etc. People need serious names for these activities so that people will treat them with respect. Your child won't be a baby for his or her entire life. A stupid, silly, goofy name that sounds cute or funny for a baby to have will not fit an older child, teenager, or an adult. Please don't set your child up for verbal abuse. Giving your child a goofy name like this will only make it easier for people to bully your child.
Girls seem to get dumb and weird names more often than boys do and I really think that this is a very bad type of sexism against girls and women. Almost everyone expects males to have serious names for their serious activities. Intelligent parents name their sons Robert, David, John, James, Jared, Jonathan, Joseph, Steven, Paul, Phillip, Michael, Matthew, Andrew, Anthony, Benjamin, William, etc. So why on earth do females have to be stuck with stupid names when women are now doing the same serious activities that males are doing? What is wrong with normal names like Catherine, Patricia, Sarah, Stephanie, Lynn, Angela, Andrea, Mary, Maria, Teresa, Elizabeth, Elaine, Rachel, Rebecca, Christine or Deborah for your daughter?
I used to think that Gwynneth Paltrow was a smart normal woman. Because of what she has named her baby daughter, I now think that she and her boyfriend are a couple of idiots.
Posted by Abolitionist at June 7, 2004 01:42 PM
Are there not more important things to worry about than what someone, anyone has named their child?
Posted by trixie bubblehead at October 10, 2004 01:04 PM
I think what we're discussing here is the abstract idea of naming your kid a word that normally isn't a name. The ABC's of naming are basically this: you can't go too common, and you can't go too weird. And Gwyneth here has obviously done something weird here. This isn't good for her kid, and it isn't good for the English language.

The Heroic Century
My best friend Jeanna e-mailed me today to remind me that The Museum of Fine Arts Houston is having a new exhibit - The Heroic Century. Included in the exhibit will be Vincent van Gogh's The Starry Night, Claude Monet's Water Lilies, and Salvador Dali's The Persistence of Memory.
It's a hell of an opportunity to see many pieces that you'll never have the chance to see again, so if you live in Houston or are nearby, I would highly suggest making your attendance a high priority. The exhibit starts September 21st of this year and runs until January 4, 2004.

A Bear of a Different Color
Another great image from MSNBC's Week in Pictures!
Pelusa, a 14-year-old female polar bear, sticks her paw through the bars of her cage July 21 at the Mendoza Zoo, northwest of Buenos Aires. Normally white, Pelusa turned violet after veterinarians administered a medicine to treat her for a skin condition. Her veterinarians said her coat should turn normal again within a month.

Talk to the Animals
Ever wonder what your cat is saying? Well, the Meowlingual may be just the thing for you.
According to the Japanese company that makes it, by having your cat meow into a microphone on the device, owners will be provided with a literal translation of what their cat has to say.
I'll predict Bella's most often used phrases right now: "Feed me! Don't pet me! Can't you ever just let me sleep? Where's my shmousie (fur covered mouse toy)? Stop putting me near my box! I don't need to go!"

New Look for eBay
This is a guest post from Carla of andshesaid.com.
Have you been surfing around eBay lately? You may have noticed that eBay is previewing a new look that will make it's debut this summer. If you haven't seen it, you can see for yourself. I say it's long overdue. It's been a long time since eBay's made some usable improvements. At least now you'll be able to see the image and bid right at the top of the page.
I have to say the guest posters are doing a good job while Kymberlie is gone... At least I think so. I've been waiting for a moment to post when there wasn't much going on but everyone's on the ball.

Cinderella Dreams
About 350 girls will be able to attend their prom in style thanks to donations of dresses, shoes, and other accessories.
I remember my prom as one of the most magical nights of my life. I looked beautiful, my dress was gorgeous, and Project Prom (a lock-in at my school with all kinds of great food, games, prizes, and fun) was a blast. Everyone should get to go to their prom. It was wonderful to see how happy these girls are to go to theirs.

Anyway...they didn't have stuff like this when I was in high school, so I could not afford to go to a prom. I'm glad they have it now!
Most of the rich girls only wear their prom dress once. Why NOT donate it to this very worthy cause?

How About We Call It "Here's My Real Agenda" Day?
Oh my fucking god. Bush declares National Sanctity of Human Life Day.
Bush, who has supported various abortion restrictions, called on all Americans on Sunday to "reaffirm the value of human life and renew our dedication to ensuring that every American has access to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."
What the fuck? Can this administration make their stance on women any clearer? If Bush really thinks that "(e)very child is a priority and a blessing, and I believe that all should be welcomed in life and protected by law," he is even more of a nutcase than I thought.
I am seriously beginning to think that this is the year that Roe v. Wade will be overturned.
How much longer as a country can we survive with this man as president? How many civil liberties and freedoms must we lose? How I wish I could be unconcerned with all of this and just live my life. How I wish I could just stick my head in the sand and pretend it doesn't exist.

I am seriously beginning to think that this is the year that Roe v. Wade will be overturned.
Count on it, dear. Maybe not this year. Maybe not until he is winging his way through his second term (if he is inflicted on us for a second term). But you'd better believe that a part of his (mostly) unspoken agenda is to find a way to get rid of legal abortions in the U.S. preferably without having to personally take any of the political fallout for it.
Which is why he probably won't move on it until his second term. At that point, he won't have to worry about getting re-elected.
It's also why he was through hissy fits when his nominations for the federal bench kept getting stalled in a Democratic-controlled Congress. He's stacking the bench with nice Conservatives so that he'll have plenty to choose from when he gets to nominate somebody.
Oh, yes, my dear. It's definitely coming.

Duhbya's attitude (and his appointment of John Ashcroft as Attorney General) was a big part of why Mike had a vasectomy shortly after the wedding. We had decided that kids were not for us, but we feared that if birth control failed, we might find ourselves without a choice in the matter.
That was OUR choice. However, I feel for women who don't want babies NOW, but might want them someday. Permanent sterilization is not the answer for them. And they are the ones who are gonna get fucked, big-time, if they get pregnant once Row vs. Wade gets overturned.
I can only pray that Duhbya will take after his daddy, and be a one-term president. He is not only stupid, he is dangerous.
Posted by Christine at January 15, 2003 08:02 PM
People, please, calm down. Time for the Voice of Reason to step in here. Roe vs. Wade is not going to be overturned, nor will Bush be pushing for it. In fact, the balance of the Court won't be shifting because it is highly unlikely we'll see the retirement of any of the liberal justices in the near future. Thus, the current ideological split will remain.
Second, new appointees to the federal bench are not likely nominees for the High Court, since Presidents want to be sure of the ideological bent before the nomination. And yes, though is no requirement they have served a tenure on the Federal Bench, it's almost certain that Bush already has his first nominee selected and waiting (Hint: He is serving in the White House as Chief Counsel as we speak.)
Finally, would you all please stop acting like Bush is a) stupid and b) dangerous. He has run his administration with a fair, even hand, fighting a war while leaving basic civil liberties virtually untouched. The only people with something to fear are those with something to hide.
Posted by The Voice of Reason at January 15, 2003 10:16 PM
But it does exist, and yes, it's clear there's an agenda. We can only hope that there is enough sense somewhere in the Justice System to keep us focused on the things that are really threatening our country, and leave the rights of women alone.

I Hate SUVs
Here's an article that backs all along what I've been saying about SUVs - the owners mostly drive like assholes and they are really dangerous. Very interesting reading courtesy of The New Guy at my office.

I've always had the same feelings as you about SUV's. Everything that article said is right on the money!
Many people who drive them DO drive like assholes, and some actually enjoy trying to intimidate me and my little econobox.
I once got into it with this macho asshole on I-95...he was driving one of those behemoth Chevy Suburbans, with a vanity plate that said *BIG BURB*. I suppose that is to compensate for the lack of a big something else...LOL!!!
Also, Mike's boss drives a Lincoln Navigator. And from what I keep hearing about this guy, he's an asshole, too!
Posted by Christine at January 9, 2003 02:35 PM
It's all true, but then the same applies so much just to drivers in general -- so clueless, so rude, etc. If we add minivan and BMW drivers to the list, I'd be in total agreement! ;)
Posted by Kelly at January 9, 2003 06:13 PM
I'm proud to say I don't fit into this category... of course, my parents bought it for us while we were in college - moving in and out of the dorms every year. I don't know if that's what I would have gotten if I had chosen, but I want my next car to be one, but that's mainly because I'm addicted to the space. Hubby doesn't want another one because of the gas milage/wastage and pollution. Heh, not to mention that we just can't afford one!
But from the drivers I've seen in town of the "big burbs" this report doesn't surprise me. They're pushy, impatient, inconsiderate... but as Kelly said so are most drivers these days! :)
Posted by jana at January 10, 2003 11:09 AM
I had an SUV, and I'm proud to say that I got rid of the thing. My Jeep Grand Cherokee was loaded with gold rims, booming stereo system, sunroof. Sure, it looked pretty...but looking back, it was not worth it at all.
For one, the stupid thing started breaking down like 6 months after I got it. In a 2 year period, I went to the shop a total of 15 times, not counting the normal things you have to do like oil changes. Now, it wasn't like I was driving up the mountain range with it, just to work the store, and back.
I quickly got the feeling that I had a lemon on my hands, so I complained to the dealership where I got it from. They acted like they didn't know me. To make a long story short, I had to sue to get out of the lease.
What did I do with the money I got back? I bought a regular Honda Accord, no bells, no whistles. Just a regular car. My friends were shocked. But I'm way happier now. I never truly realized before how much money I was blowing in maintaining an SUV (gas, insurance, etc.) Now I got cash to do other things.
My mom still has an SUV, and now she's getting burned at the gas pump. She can't make it a week on a tank of gas, but I can go 9 or 10 days.
I wish more people would wake up, that you don't need a gaz guzzling SUV to be happy.
Posted by Amantari at March 2, 2003 06:40 PM
I used to drive a Prizm. Now I drive a Tahoe. I like the view, the power, and the fact that my head doesn't touch the ceiling. SUVs are definitely not the most logical thing to own, but I like them anyway.
PS-I try to be a courteous driver, I know what it's like not seeing anything but a grille in the rearview.
Posted by Aaron at June 16, 2003 03:40 AM
i own a 03 expedition. i did not buy it to impress, intimidate, etc. i bought it to tow my boat with, say it with me now, towing. some would tell me to buy a minivan, well i tried that. my astro puked its tranny up after less than 400 miles. i tried renting an suv to tow with, every place in town said the same thing, no hitches on their suvs. i kept my boat in a slip for two years, yearly cleaning + slip rental cost me about 3000.00. you tell me what car will tow 5500 lbs, + six people and their gear, fit in a standard garage. and that a 4 foot 10 inch person can drive without their chest against the steering wheel. i drive way less than the average driver, so don't bother with your wasting gas, supporting terrorism bs, i am a polite, couteous driver with a class b license, i think i can handle this little truck. for buying a vehicle that fits my needs, i have read online that i am a self centered asshole jerk, insecure, vain, nervous about my marrige, uncomfortable about parenthood,. self absorbed, have little interest in neighbors+community, seldom go to church, never volunteer, aggressive, reptillian, seduced by power, etc, etc, etc. by people who know nothing about me. i think you people are sad. i pity you, i will pray for you. i will also fight you to the death for my freedoms, and it dosent matter which of us dies. patrick henry is my hero, it's an american thing, you wouldn't understand.
Posted by jerry at July 9, 2003 11:49 PM
Hey Jerry- maybe you need to calm down a little Bub, everyone pretty much concedes that some have legitimate reasons for owning their Chevy Gargantua. Regardless of that, your average white collar suburban person who buys one to cart themselves back and forth to work, haul the groceries, and bring the kiddies to Chucky Cheese certainly can't justify owing a vehicle the size of a Mack truck. That having been said..."me thinks thee dost protest too much." I think it's sad that you pity us for having a difference of opinion from you, it's that type of thinking that causes people like me to dislike people like yourself, I'll "pray for you." Oh, and the next time you take the family out to Ruby Tuesdays for dinner maybe take the wifes compact (you, the wife and two kids will fit quite comfortably in it, trust me) you'd be doing all of us a favor.
Posted by Slim at September 15, 2003 10:11 AM
Ok - here's my experience - not opinion - of SUVs, and the people who drive them. I will say at the outset that yes, I really hate them, but this is about my recent accident involving one, and what I learned from it.
My husband and I were at a carwash, one where you drive in, and workers therein clean it for you. In other words, witnesses. As the Lincoln Navigator ahead of us pulled forward, the workers motioned us forward. "Keep Gear in Neutral, Shut off Engine", the signs said. We pulled up, put it in neutral, and shut off. Okay, here comes the asinine bit. The Navigator revs up, goes into reverse, and backs into our car - making a nice, big dent in our hood. Mind you - we then realized that the SUV's bumper wasn't even touching our car - the license plate was doing the damage. God knows what kind of bodily harm could happen if we'd been hit in a different situation, at a higher speed. The workers are screaming at the driver, banging on his windows to stop - but he doesn't. Obviously he doesn't even know how to drive this hulking monster. We get out of the carwash, and the guy immediately starts to blame the workers - taking no responsibility whatsoever. No apology, even when he accepts that it's his fault. His vehicle has sustained no damage whatsoever - just a bent license plate. He's so careless about the whole thing - looking down at our car as if this is a big waste of his time. Only after threats on my part was he willing to be even remotely reasonable about dealing with the situation.
So, there you have it - if nothing else, my story proves just what the article pointed out - the bumpers on these horrific, self-centered vehicles are way, way out of proportion in relation to that of the average automobile. I shudder to think of what could have been.
Posted by Danielle at February 2, 2004 12:57 PM
You know, what does it matter what people drive? I drive an Expedition because I have 6 kids. Do you really think I want to pay $623 a month for fun? NO, it carries my family and that is all that matters to me. generally people drive what they have to, not what they want to. If this was true, I would own a 69 camaro!

Get Your Money Back
Surprise, surprise! Turns out the music industry is guilty of price fixing CDs. Who'd have thought? The good news, though, is that if you bought a CD between 1995 and 2000 you are elligbile to be part of the class action lawsuit. You can get $20 back by going and filing a claim. It's not much money, but it's better than nothing and I personally would like to see the recording industry lose a little money.

Art My Ass
A statue depicting a woman falling to her death from the World Trade Center was covered up in Rockefeller Center today.
I am all for freedom of speech in art, but just because you can make something that offensive and heartbreaking doesn't mean you should. And if you do, at least put it in a gallery or something not on the fucking street where people are assaulted by it. And he was a fool if he didn't think something like that would cause pain to the people who saw it.

Despair
A man in Iran beheaded his seven-year-old daughter because he thought she had been raped by her uncle. He had to do it to defend his "honor, fame, and dignity."
I was thinking the other night of the woman in Nigeria who is going to be stoned to death for having a child out of wedlock. As soon as her baby is weaned, they are going to kill her. I weep for people in this world. When will we stop forcing women to wear clothes that cover them from head to foot and kill them if they are victims of violence? When will we stop female genital mutilations? When will this planet be a fair place to live? Ever? Never? Stories like this make me think that it is hopeless, that this world will never be a better place.

Hidden Agenda My Ass
Nickelodeon is going to air a special about children with gay parents. The idea of the special is to help others see that people with different families are the same as other people. Of course, Traditional Values Coalition, a right-wing group, sees it differently. Their executive director says, "It is a cover for promoting homosexuality for kids." WTF is wrong with people? Some people have families that have same-sex parents. How can you possibly see a show that tries to help kids learn to tolerate others and see that all people are the same as a show with a hidden agenda to turn your kid gay? Will people never learn that a show like this doesn't turn someone gay? If you're gay, you're gay. It's as simple as that. What a bunch of idiots.

Too Cute
An American Eskimo dog adopted two kittens, even going so far as to produce milk. I just love the picture of the dog and the kitten together. It's too cute.

Awww, that is so cute! When Mike was married to his ex, they had a lot of cats, and to their amazement, when they took in a trio of motherless kittens, one of their other cats, who had never borne a litter, and had been spayed, started producing milk for the kittens.
But I had never heard of an inter-species thing like this before! I guess it just goes to show that even animals can do what they need to in order to help others in need.
What a great story! Thanks for sharing it! :-)

there's a place here in San Diego (i think it's the arena for either SDSU or USD) called the Jenny Craig Pavilion. i'd take the minute maid park any day. still, i'm partial to BOB (bank one ballpark). and "The Jake" (Jacob's Field) sounds cool too. hey, ya never know, maybe some cool nick will come out of it.... either way, it's better than 10 run field....

That could possible be worse than Pepsi Center, and National Car Rental Center. Oh for the days of original names like "Maple Leaf Gardens"!!

Topless = Newsworthy?
Jennifer Aniston is suing because a photographer with a telephoto lens scaled a neighbor's wall to take shots of her "reclining topless in her backyard, wearing only her panties."
What kills me is that the defendants argued that the photo was "newsworthy" so they should be allowed to publish it. WTF is wrong with these people? How is her lounging around topless, in her own backyard, newsworthy? I hate the paparazzi and hope she wins big time. I am glad I am not famous.

But hey, you are a little hottie, so maybe someone would think it was newsworthy to snap a picture you in your backyard :winkwink:
Posted by kristine at June 4, 2002 03:51 PM
True as it may be that she is a little hottie... Is it really anyone's business to snap any pic of her out of her home or backyard without permission, first? I don't think so:-)
Posted by Anne at June 4, 2002 07:01 PM
that's so against the law. if she were on a beach in the south of france, yes, fair game. backyard? no. she'll win.
i wouldn't mind seeing the pics, just for, you know, legal research purposes.

Glad To See This
I was glad to see that the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund will be extended to some of the gay men and lesbians who lost partners in the WTC attacks. The article mentions that cases involving heterosexual domestic partners are being reviewed in the same way. What a terrible thing it would be to not only lose your partner, but be denied the compensation that you deserve. I hope these people are taken care of.

I agree...both gay/lesbian people and heterosexual domestic partners should be taken care of here. I, too, hope that these people receive the same compensation that married people are getting.
In fact, I believe that the laws should be changed all around, to protect such couples in a multitude of situations.
Case in point...although nowhere near the magnitude of the 9/11 tragedies...a couple of years before Mike and I were married, but living together, he had a heart attack. I was working as a cook at Applebee's at the time, in fact, was at work when the call came from the hospital. They were nice at first, but once it looked like Mike wasn't going to die, they started getting up my ass to return to work. And I did, but I asked for fewer hours.
The worst thing was when they were ready to release Mike from the hospital...I was supposed to work that night, but I called and told them I would not be able to come in, and I told them why...I had to bring him home, there was no one else to do it, and it wasn't like he could get home on his own.
Yet they gave me all sorts of shit about it...and punished me afterwards by doing stuff like cutting all the kitchen staff but me (including the dishwasher), after I asked for a lighter schedule, since I had to take care of Mike once he got home.
If I had been married to him at the time, I could have busted them...I would have been covered under the Family & Medical Leave Act. But since we were just *shacking up* in the eyes of the law, I could do nothing. I ended up walking out on that job. I could ill afford to do so, but they were torturing me so much, and I felt I had no other recourse.
So yes...domestic partners of any gender/sexual preference should have the same rights as married couples...legally, health insurance-wise, and everything else. Just because some people don't have that little piece of paper doesn't make the union any less *real*.
Posted by Christine at May 30, 2002 01:06 PM
There was an officer here in Tampa who was murdered in the line of duty last year. She had lived with her partner for several years and they even had a union ceremony, but obviously weren't "legally" married. She was denied spousal benefits and the pension plan went to the officer's parents instead. It was a heartbreaking case to watch, and I'm glad somebody is finally getting it right.

I too am quite concerned about what's happening with me. I have been having chest discomfort, a/k/a chest pain, pressure. I have been seeing a cardiologist for about 6 months now. The symptoms continued until recently I submitted to an angiogram which revealed beautiful, healthy arteries. I have also had a stress test, ecocardiogram, lung test and bloods, all negative. But the symptoms continue. Within the past week, I lost consciousness twice. It was so quick that I almost wondered if that was what happened but I am not going to second guess myself. Something is wrong. I went to the doctor today and she recommended that I see a neurologist. Also, my hands become numb during the night. I am so apprehensive now. I am on high blood pressure medication and would like to start exercising but am afraid to do so with the dizziness and passing out.

Hey there, I have had issues with hearth palpatations for about 15 years now..I have had electos echos Holtors the works and they can't seem to find and true reason as to why my heart has irregular beats.. I have been having palpatations for 3 days in a row now.. it's getting rather frustrating and scary.. I have 4 young children to worry about.. if I can get my breathing to regulate , that may help.. breathing is a very important factor in dealing with these things.bearing down sometimes helps as does a good cough..drinking cold water is also helpful.. well take care all Michelle

Oh My God
While surfing CNN I saw a news story about a fifteen year old girl and a ten year-old boy who murdered their six year-old brother. Not too many details were realeased, but the horror that the little boy must have experienced and the grief that the parents must be going through right now is just heartbreaking. I really do wonder what the world is coming to.

Vote For the Texas Quarter!
You know those nifty new quarters with a design for each state? Now you can go vote for your favorite Texas quarter. I really like number two. I was thinking, "Man, I wish it had the shape of Texas somewhere on it." After clicking the quarter to view a bigger shot of it, I saw that it does have one. I think my choice is made now. Number four looks like a police badge to me. It and number five are boring, though five is way in the lead. Not to influence you, but go vote for number two. :-)

I voted for number 5.
Because it's just got that bigheaded, egotistical quality that makes Texas what it is.
This is my guess why Texans are all over it.
Too bad it doesn't have a gigantic penis shooting out from the star. Then it'd be perfect.
Hmm, this may have been inappropriate ;)

I think that much like all the other quarters, Texas should have something on their quarter that describes our state specifically. Why not something like the Alamo? Blue Bonnets perhaps?

Helping Others Get Their Lives Back
Interesting news article about an ex-CIA disguise expert that makes prosthetics for people who have become disfigured. What a wonderful thing to do for people. As much as people say looks don't matter, when someone becomes horribly disfigured, it's a massively traumatic experience and they often have problems fitting back into society. This man has helped so many people get their lives back. Truly wonderful.

Duh-bya Bush For Sure!
I decided to do a search today for the highest IQ score on record just to see what it is and I cam across this article that says President Bush has lowest IQ of all presidents of past 50 years. I must say, I am not at all surprised to find out that he is actually lower that 100, which is the average IQ score. They said that Bush has a 6,500 word vocabulary versus an average of 11,000 words for other presidents. Do you think that includes the ones he makes up? Love the fact that Democratic presidents actually average 40 points higher than the Republicans. I was surprised how smart some of the presidents are. Scores in the 170s and 180s are very rare and very high. Btw, my scores average around 160. I am one smart cookie! :-)
Update: Damn! I've been busted! According to Snopes, this story is just not true. Well, it just SEEMED like it had to be true. Oh, well. It was still good for a laugh! ~blushing sheepishly~

Odd Todd
I found out today that Odd Todd (another unemployed dot.commer) was busted by the New York Labor Department (free registration required at The NY Times to view the article). I feel for Todd and left him $5.00. I hope that he doesn't end up losing his money to The Man. Like it isn't shitty enough being unemployed (the part where he talks about not being able to sleep at night resonated strongly with me), now you have to get in trouble for being successful in getting donations from people. If he was actively looking for a job and has the documents to prove it, they need to back off of him. Poor Todd.

You'll Be Missed, Doc
I was reading the news today and saw that animator Chuck Jones has died at age 89. This is so sad. Like most kids, I grew up on a steady diet of his cartoons and some of my fondest memories are of his work. I loved "What's Opera, Doc?" and remember watching it through my Viewfinder. One of my absolute cartoons featured Marc Anthony & Kitty (the bulldog and black and white kitten). The bulldog thought the little kitty had ended up cooked in a batch of cookies and when the mom in the picture made him a cookie shaped like a cat he just cried and carried it around everywhere. It was just priceless. My dad used to sing the songs from "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi" to my brother and I and whenever we saw snakes (we lived on an acre in a wooded area of Texas), would call them Nog or Noganina. Going though his official website, it's amazing how many incredible characters he created. What an amazingly talented man. He will be missed by children and adults everywhere.

It's About Time
As the clock ticks over from 8:01 PM on Wednesday, February 20th, 2002, time will (for sixty seconds only) read in perfect symmetry. To be more precise: 20:02, 20/02, 2002. It is an event which has only ever happened once before, and is something which will never be repeated. The last occasion that time read in such a symmetrical pattern was long before the days of the digital watch (or the 24-hour clock): 10:01 AM, on January 10, 1001. And because the clock only goes up to 23.59, it is something that will never happen again.

Canadian Gold!
I had started to make a post last week about the whole Canadian figure skating pair scandal and never got around to it. This is the first time (probably since 1988) that I've actually watched the Olympics thanks to Steven Tivoing it. I was absolute stunned by Jamie Sale and David Pelletier's performance. When they finished and they just had the look that they KNEW they'd do the absolute best they could, I was so happy for them and proud of them. Then, they got totally screwed in the judging. Today, that has been rectified. They have been awarded the gold medal. I am so glad that this travesty has been rectified!
