Name That Tune
For last year's Summer Burn It CD Swap, I received an awesome CD. Unfortunately, if it came with a tracklisting, it's been long since misplaced. The CD itself is orange with various euphemisms for sex (the theme that season was "music to have sex to"). It's cool, but does not have the maker's name or URL on there, so I have no idea who created it.
The whole point to this post is that I love the last song on there (actually, I love most of the songs on there. It's a really excellent compilation). I know the artist is Art of Noise, but I don't know what the song title is. Can anyone name that tune? (Right click and "Save As" please.)

I put that song on one of my Summer Burn It CDs last year. Maybe it was mine!

That's 'Moment's in Love' by Art of Noise. Art of Noise

Yes, definitely Moments in Love. I rememebr I actually put that on one of the CD's I sent out for the exchange. *lol* Speaking of, are you still doing that? I would LOVE to participate in that again now that my home life has calmed down a bit. *(*(*hugs*)*)* and so sorry about your Aunt.

A Question For the Ages
Why do guys insist on putting a picture up on their personal ad with some animal that they've just killed? I'd have to think that even if a girl doesn't mind being with a guy who hunts she still doesn't look at that picture and go, "Oh! A dead deer! That's hot!" It baffles me.

i know, right? and what about those guys that get like, naked women tattooed on their arms, chest, whatever... are there women that really find that sexy?
Posted by mikey at December 17, 2004 12:08 PM
I don't know what it is, maybe they are trying to ward off those vegan women, or as said earlier trying to show how manly they are.
What about the people that post a picture of what they looked like when they were skinny or from a long time ago and when you meet them you are they wooza. That is why I quick doing the online dating thing a couple of years ago after a couple of those incidents.

Texas Title and Registration Question
I have a question for you. If you have a car that's been gifted to you, do you have to just pay the $10 gift tax or do you also have to pay the sales tax part too? Trying to put my car in my name since the loan was under Steven's until I paid it off. When we broke up he gave me a letter saying he gifted the car to me, but I'm not sure what I have to pay.

Here we have to pay the sales tax as well as any other fees. Call or look up on the 'net your assessor and find out for sure.
Posted by Sara at November 18, 2004 08:53 AM
you only have to pay the gift tax, no sales tax. my old car that I brought down from Michigan was in my stepdad's name and he gifted it to me after it was paid off. Steven will have to sign the back of the title over to you and bring the letter as well to the courthouse (or wherever you get your registration).
Posted by girl at November 19, 2004 12:05 AM
I thought the letter that he wrote said he sold it to you for "x" value? Because if it did, then you will be charged more than $10. However, if it just says it was a gift, than the $10 is probably the case.
And the lines at the office in downtown are normally *much* shorter than the lines out in the 'burbs.
Posted by Christine at November 19, 2004 07:17 AM
yeah, Christine's right. it'll have to specifically say that it was a gift or they'll find a way to charge you sales tax.

Help!
For the last couple of days I've been pulling my hair out over this blog. Thursday I posted - no problem. Friday, I come to make a post only to get the following error:
Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@neuroticfishbowl.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.
More information about this error may be available in the server error log.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Apache/1.3.33 Server at www.neuroticfishbowl.com Port 80
New posts would display, though they would show up in my last five entries in my MT menu.
I called Christine thinking it was a hosting error to find out it was an MT error. I posted on the support forums, but so far no one's had an idea on how to fix it.
After mucking about, I believe it's an index error since changing back to the default MT template (hence the funky look of the site) at least lets the new entries be displayed. I checked my error log on my cPanel and found the following error:
[Sat Nov 13 15:53:05 2004] [error] [client 24.174.56.81] Premature end of script headers: /home/kymfish/public_html/mt/mt.cgi
Does anyone know what might be the problem? Anyone want to login to my MT and see if they can fix it? I'm desperate here.

The more I think about this, I suspect that your index page is simply too long and bulky, way too many index templates in MT trying to rebuild - causing your site to time out before your index page could load.
Kill some of the template rebuilds, strip down your sidebar and all the stuff running on it, and I suspect your old index template will run fine again. I could be wrong, but .... well, I've said for months that your site takes forever to load, so putting the pieces together leads me to this.
Posted by Christine at November 13, 2004 10:07 PM
Oh thats not fun. I wish i could help more but i dont really know the inner workings of MT but you might wanna check a few things.
Iv seen an errorlike this before on cgi scrips becasue of inproper line breaks in the script (dos style stuff like if the file was opened in windows with word or something when you resave it is f's it all up) Was the file uploaded in ASCII mode when you uploaded it? Also are the permissions set ok. Might wanna do a quick chmod 755 of the file.
Posted by Xerxes at November 14, 2004 03:17 AM
I started having this problem too! I am running MT 2.661. I was unable to post and receive comments, but the other site that uses my mt install wasn't having a single problem. My rebuilds stopped when I got to the index rebuilds. I ended up going through all of my index templates and rebuilding each individually. I found that it was my blogtimes plugin in that was causing problems. Once I removed the plugin, my site is rebuilding fine. I notice that you use Blogtimes as well, maybe you should look into that...

Scanner Help
I've been scanning some cards that I made while over at Chrisitine's and Mike's this weekend (I came over on Saturday and left at like 2:00 Monday morning. Have I mentioned I love their house?) so they can be added to the gallery over at Stampin' Fish. For some reason, though, I cannot get the colors to come out as they look in real life.
So, here's the point to this rambling post: I need a new scanner. I looked around a bit over at Amazon, but I have no idea which is a good one. I thought about either the HP PSC 1210 or the Canon CanoScan 8400F (though it's a little more than I want to spend. Ideally, the price range is $100 or less).
Anyone have any good suggestions?

I've got a HP 4-in-1 printer/scanner/fax/copier, and think it rocks :) It's been superseded now, and is probably outside the $100 range (I don't know, international currencies confuzzle me), but I just thought I'd put in a kind word for HP, seeing I like this thing :)

Survival Needs
Did anyone TiVo or tape Survivor tonight? My stupid cable box recorded blank space for the hour. I'd be happy to pay for postage and the cost of a video tape.
Update: I started looking around last night and found BitTorrent. It took a couple of hours, but I managed to download Survivor and just finished watching it. Thanks to all who offered to help!

You might try the TV without Pity forums, they have a tape swap thing there.
Or BitTorrent, I hear folks share shows that way (though I have no idea how it works - it isn't worth the bother if you have a 56k dial-up for the 'net)

Saw your comment on your TiVo over at Eve's... I've been having issues with TiVo changing my cable box's channels as well, and apparently, it's an issue with the giant Motorola digital cable boxes, especially when you use the serial cable -- which is what I have and how mine is set up. Unfortunately, there's not much you can do about it, and TiVo doesn't seem to be willing to work with the Motorola people about it...

What is the exact page you are trying to save? With more information it shouldn't be that hard to figure out. I've found that sometimes using a different browser will allow you to save a page source that another will not.

CSS Problems in Firefox
Ever since my IE got completely hosed by a trojan (Anyone know how to completely uninstall IE? Everything I've tried doesn't work), I've been using Firefox.
It's fine as a browser so far, but every now and then, I come to a page that has the funkiest text display. I've seen it on Lists of Bests and Wordpress. My guess is it has something to do with how Firefox reads CSS since my default fonts are Times New Roman and Arial.
I've got a screenshot so you can see what I see (to quote Johnny Smith from The Dead Zone). Anyone else ever have this problem? If so, how'd you fix it?

IE doesn't completely uninstall if you're using any version of Windows beyond Win98, I think. Maybe even Win95... IE is integrated into Windows, which is one reason there was/is a lawsuit against MS. Sorry, you're stuck with it.
Posted by niki at July 7, 2004 10:23 PM
Wow, that is just BIZARRE. WP has *never* looked anything like that in my browsers.
I think you're just going to have to reformat. That bug you have is just evil.
Posted by Christine at July 8, 2004 02:59 AM
I've seen a similar problem at one point, but only on Linux :)
What happened is the website trying to use a font that's not installed on the machine, and it was then defaulting to the first one it found (which is some funky looking font that starts with an "A"). Check if the first alphabetlical font is that funky font. (Browsing to c:\winnt\fonts does it in win2k - don't know about winxp). If so, you might consider either trying to :
1) Play with Firefox's preferences - reset all the fonts, and save prefs
2) Make sure you have the font WP is trying to use.
3) Reinstall something ;)

WAP Mail
Occasionally when I get stuck in a line or something, I use my Nokia 3650 cell phone to check my mail.
Typically, I go through Mail2Web, a site that lets you check any e-mail account. Unfortunately, the site's not really designed to be accessed on a cell phone's small screen, so you have to scroll back and forth and it takes freaking forever.
So what I need from you, dear readers, are any suggestions on a site that does the same thing but is optimized for cell phones and other devices. Anyone know one? I did some looking around but didn't find anything that fit my purpose.
Update: I'm all set now thanks to NinaKaye who noticed the WAP and PDA version icons on the bottom of Mail2Web that I had completely overlooked before. Oops!

I don't know much about this stuff (using cell phones for internet) and I've never heard of mail2web before, but when I just went to that page I noticed a couple of links near the bottom. A PDA version and a WAP version. Is that what you need or does that still not work? ('cause if that's the case...I don't know and I'm sorry I made you read all this! heh)
Posted by NinaKaye at June 8, 2004 09:06 PM
For computer-based IMAP browsing, I like to use XS2Mail.com - but I don't think they have a WAP version.
Posted by Meredith at June 9, 2004 09:16 AM
Why don't you just use the e-mail application built in to the Nokia 3650? I find it much better than shoehorning e-mail through a WAP browser.

Posted by Noelle at May 26, 2005 11:21 PM
To have insulted viewers with the flimsy ending that occurred in the second half of the finale was pathetic! I felt as if I were viewing another Lord of the Rings episode instead of a spy drama. I really enjoyed the first hour but feel that. In the second hour, the previous five years were ignored. It seemed as if the writers suddenly realized that they only had 15 minutes of air time left and scrambled to put together a hodge-podge-piece-of-crap ending. They should be FORCED to go back to the drawing board a do a re-write. We can view it next week and pretend that this week didn't happen.

Extra Time
I've finally finished my track list for this edition of Burn It. According to WinAmp, it's at 79 minutes and 58 seconds - enough to fit onto a CD. However, both Windows Media Player and MP3 CD Converter tells me that there's more time than that (WMP is over by 9 seconds and since MP3 CD Converter adds an extra second between songs, it's over by 23 seconds).
Does anyone know of a converter that lets them burn CDs without the extra time? I could swap a song out for another, but now it's a matter of principle. It will fit on the damn disc.

Did you try Nero?
Posted by kim at May 11, 2004 08:34 PM
Second on the Nero choice. With the later versions you can cross fade the tracks (5 secs is what I usually use.)
Posted by Brian the Red at May 11, 2004 08:50 PM
yep. with Nero you can either take out the extra seconds between tracks or like Brian said, crossfade. just be careful with crossfading b/c it can sound really fucking lame if you don't put songs in a good order that flows.
Posted by girl at May 11, 2004 09:30 PM
I'll concur with Nero or Roxio. If you need a few extra seconds programs like those will save you a few seconds with the crossfades. And girl is right. It's gotta flow. I use it all the time!
Posted by KB at May 11, 2004 11:53 PM
Yes, Nero and Roxio (I use Roxio), also Music Match Jukebox ...
In short, just about anything except what you're using now! :D

Posted by brykMantra at May 12, 2004 09:08 AM
I use Roxio. If you select "burn disc at once" on the Music burning option (the more complicated looking second option. Not the first option) it doesn't put in the extra seconds.
On another note though, I signed up for this burn-it session weeks ago and was just wondering if/when you notify us of who we are supposed to send the discs to?

If you want to be really cool you can beat mix the songs like a real DJ :-)
MixMeister Pro5 or express will help you mix it and then will seprate the songs into tracks so it is not just one long song. mixmeister.com/
And it will burn the cd for you also....

Tivo Modem Problems
We had a really big storm here in Houston Sunday morning and it appears that the modem in my TiVo has been blown yet again (this happened about two and a half years ago and when I left Steven's house, I forgot to get my surge protector. Oops!).
Does anyone know if it's easy to replace the modem if you're tech-savvy? My brother's roommate is pretty good at stuff like that, but since the modem's on the motherboard (at least I believe it is), I don't want to have him mucking about in there if it's something that's pretty difficult to do.

Kymberlie, Before I sent my Tivo back I opened up the case and if my memory serves me correctly, the modem is on the motherboard. If you don't want to go through the pain of sending it back, you might want to go this route:
http://www.weaknees.com/modem_fix.php
Posted by nastybastard at May 3, 2004 08:27 AM
For the cost of fixing the modem, I would consider a refurb Tivo Series 2. Although you have the lifetime subscription, so that might make it worthwhile to get it fixed.
Have you tried "rebooting" the Tivo? I left mine off for about 8 hours, and that fixed a problem I was having years ago.
Posted by Christine at May 3, 2004 11:04 AM
Holy smokes. I didn't even think about the Tivo blowing out. I shoulda been worried all weekend. Note to self: make sure it's in a surge protector.
Posted by Jenn at May 3, 2004 01:36 PM
I would strongly oppose buying a refurbished Tivo. Although it's a great deal, it's really Russian Roulette. I didn't even have the refurbished Tivo a month before it totally went apeshit on me.

I love my refurbed tivo. no problems with it.
Posted by emily at May 3, 2004 04:41 PM
go with the refurb - or get the PCI card so you can get all your programming over the Internet. (I've got a wireless card in mine - bye bye modem!)

I got a really cheap external modem and hooked it up. It works like a champ!

A Ponderance
I was talking to a guy yesterday and the fact that I am a fount of useless information came up (he's started calling me Mistress of Useless Knowledge, which I completely dig). He asked me if I knew how the tradition of men opening doors for women started and I was stumped. I looked online, but couldn't find anything. Does anyone happen to know? It's bugging me that I can't find it.

My guess would be from George Washington, "Rules of Civility & Decent Behaviour In Company and Conversation" 1744, rule number #29, which said, "When you meet with one of Greater Quality than yourself, Stop, and retire especially if it be at a Door or any Straight place to give way for him to Pass."

Thanks something to start with. :-)

At various times in history womens dresses have been so huge, what with trains, bustles, crinolines, hoops, 50 yrds of fabric/lace/brocade stiffened for 'effect', etc.
it was nearly impossible for 'ladies'of
the wealthier sort to make it out of closed doors, much less close enough to
the door knob to open them. Womens fashions have for hundreds of years been
designed for effect not practicality.
Hence the term 'lady of leasure' and all
that business of having 'the vapors'
fainting, and such. It was not practical, or comfortable, and in some instances unhealthy. Clothing was a major influence in how the perspective of woman as being the 'weaker sex' was propagated and perpetuated. It also was a way men could show off their prosperity and had influence in their wives choice of wardrobe. Think of how
many pairs of shoes you have and need to dress appropriately and then think of how many your guy friends have and need to get by. Frankly, I like shoes.
Remember: Shoes and jewelry always fit
even if your clothes don't.

Nokia 3650 Question
I've got a Nokia 3650 camera phone that I totally love. I send multimedia messages pretty often (forwarding the pictures to people), but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to add a subject line. The e-mails always came with N/A as the subject. Can anyone help me out? Drives me crazy that I don't know how to do this.

Audblog Question
Let's say, hypothetically, that one was Audblogging from a bar and that one has had a lot to drink and the place is really loud, so it's almost an impossibility to understand the directions on how to post. When you login to the site, you can view that you have posts from that evening, but clicking on them gives you an "object not found" error. Is there any way to ever get those to post or are they just lost for good?

A Question
I have a question. Tonight I have a date with a guy who used to be in the Air Force. Since he was in the Air Force, does that automatically mean he was a pilot? Can you be in the Air Force and not have flown? I don't know and I didn't want to sound like an idiot if I asked him if he knows how to fly if *everyone* in the Air Force can fly.

I have a friend who married a guy in the Air Force and I can say with certainty they don't have to know how to fly. He did set up computers for the base. They have all kinds of maintainence workers, cooks, warehouseman...just about any job you can imagine it would take to run a business.
Posted by daisy at March 22, 2004 08:18 AM
Just ask him what he does in the force. He will probably be happy to tell you because you will seem interested in it. Happy belated birthday by the way. :)
Posted by kat at March 22, 2004 08:22 AM
nope...they have many other jobs to be filled. I think it's actually pretty tough to become a pilot...fitness and eyesight wise, I think...
Posted by jason at March 22, 2004 08:50 AM
Nope - doesn't have to be a fly boy if he has Air Force tacked on him! I was in the Navy for 3 years before I saw a ship... and I forgot we had them! ;)
Posted by Susan at March 22, 2004 09:10 AM
My father was in the Air Force. I'd be scared if they let his dumb ass fly.
So no, not everyone in the Air Force is a pilot. *grin*
Posted by Mac at March 22, 2004 10:14 AM
Definitely can be in the Air Force and not fly.
I'm retired Navy and never went to sea.
Posted by Deb at March 22, 2004 10:53 AM
Funny thing is you can be a pilot in the Navy, Marines or Army too.
Posted by emily at March 22, 2004 01:02 PM
Ask him. Chances are he has not flown. Very few do.
Posted by irfan at March 22, 2004 02:06 PM
WHOA! Wait one second folks.
Irfan's advice, for starters, is teh worst one. DO NOT ASK an Air Force personnel member if they fly - that is the kiss of death on a date. The guy will shut you out IMMEDIATELY. Why? Because if he does fly, now he knows you like fly boys and will be looking to get laid that night - and if he didn't fly, he'll think all you want is a fly boy.
Just let it come up in conversation. But never ask the direct question.
Very few have flown, as Irfan pointed out. So just go with it.
Posted by Gil at March 22, 2004 02:14 PM
I never said ask a direct question!
Posted by irfan at March 22, 2004 03:37 PM
I agree with Gil - don't ask directly, but I would ask "what did you do in the Air Force?" some people have some strange and original jobs you would have never seen out in the 'civilian' world.
Posted by Susan at March 22, 2004 03:43 PM
oh no, my husband was in the air force and he cries like a little bi-atch every time we get on a plane. he was a telephone operator. :)
Posted by urs at March 22, 2004 07:47 PM
lordy no! I come from an Air Force family, and none of my USAF-retired relatives were pilots! In general, you can never go wrong just generally asking a guy what he "does".
Posted by Ang at March 23, 2004 12:21 AM
My father was an airborne sniper for the army. He got his pilots license when he was teen. We didnt know what was worse, having him as a pilot or a paratrooper.

Posted by irfan at March 23, 2004 09:35 AM
I know it's late to be adding this to the pot, but I dated (and I use the term loosely) a guy who was in the Air Force, but he was an audiologist. He had relocated to San Antonio (Wilford Hall AFB) from Washington, DC, and it was right at the time the Persian Gulf War was going on. I thought this was lame, but I went with it. He told me not to be surprised when he picked me up in fatigues because he said that they were "on call" all the time. Weird. I thought maybe he just wanted an excuse to wear them. I liked him the minute I saw him, tho, because he drove up in a pearl white 300ZX!

Dietary Questions
With all the hype that the South Beach Diet has been getting lately, I took a look at it and it seems that it's one of those "no carbs, higher fat" diets.
Now, I know several people have been either on it or thinking of trying it out, so I was wondering if anyone with any health know how could do me a favor.
Thanks to Christine, I found this place called Fit Day that keeps track of what you eat and your exercise activities.
I posted what I was considering making my daily diet here and I was worried that while I don't have a lot of carbs, I have a ton of fat. Steven always told me that it wasn't the fat that was my problem, but the carbs.
Anyone care to offer up their opinion?

Personally, I have a hell of a time giving up the carbs. Therefore, I have done Weight Watchers and LOVE it. It actually works. You may not think you are losing weight as fast, but I feel for me that this is something I could stick to and work with forever.
Posted by Adelle at December 8, 2003 10:58 AM
I've lost a bit of weight recently, mostly from cutting my fat to 30g a day and limiting carbs where I can. If you're getting a lot of exercise, you can up the carbs a bit, you'll need it.
I get virtually no exercise cause I'm a lazy-butt, so I've cut out most of the bread, potatoes and pasta that make me full but a fatty. I went from a 16 jeans to a 14 without even really noticing that I was "dieting", and now those jeans are getting baggy too.
Good luck!
Posted by Danelle at December 8, 2003 11:47 AM
I believe in limiting PROCESSED/white carbs such as white bread, pasta, refined sugars and the like.
I try to eat smaller amounts of white rice but can't cut it out completely for cultural reasons.
SBD makes a lot of sense to me, and Atkins, if done properly...
Posted by Zorbs at December 8, 2003 02:52 PM
I agree with Adelle. I don't think all carbs are evil - you just have to watch what you eat. I'm *way* too picky of an eater to do the South Beach diet. Half of the recipes in the book made me want to hurl.
Personally, I think you need to watch what you eat, and then work on toning exercises - I really think it would do the trick for you after all the weight you've lost already.
Posted by Christine at December 8, 2003 10:59 PM
I couldn't resist adding my two cents. I carried extra weight for years until I tried Canyon Ranch portion control. You don't have to count or measure anything, just eat spa type food most of the time. Buy their new cookbook, or buy all three books if you like them.
Posted by Julia at December 9, 2003 04:54 AM
I just started the SBD on Monday. I haven't have any cravings yet. I'm a very picky eater. So far so good. I'm going to check out Fit Day.
Posted by Ash at December 10, 2003 03:36 PM
Just a little info on the south beach diet - since we've been doing it for the past week. It is definitely NOT a "low carb/high fat" diet. That would be Atkins - and this is nothing like that. Actually the diet is more well-balanced than anything I've done before, and the weight loss is SURPRISING. (Who would have known that just "eating right" would mean an automatic weight loss!)
The diet is about eating the RIGHT carbs - (like the ones you get from vegetables (not all, certain ones) and some dairy) - pasta and bread are out in the beginning, but after a week or so, they're brought back - but only in whole wheat types. There is "high protien" but only those with low fat as well. You can't just go eat bacon and eggs and call it a day. Eggs, yes, but bacon is limited, and only low fat (I think it's restricted to turkey bacon). And when you have protien, it's important to have vegetables as well because it slows digestion and will make you feel "full" longer. The diet really gets you looking at what you're eating and what it contains. And what it boils down to is that anything "pre-made" is USUALLY not good for you. (unfortunately - because it means you have to preare EVERYTHING yourself)
My only complaint on the diet is that it's EXPENSIVE to buy so many vegetables, and all the low fat stuff. Our grocery bill for the last two weeks has literally doubled.
But I'm CONVINCED this is a healthy way to eat. Personally, I think there's a TON of foods you're allowed. But if you're not a vegetable person, South Beach may not be for you. Because I think what makes it work is the low fat/protien/vegetable combo.
I'll stop taking up your whole comments area now. LOL! If you have any questions about the diet - feel free to email me. :D
(FYI - I just tried to post this, and it gave me an error with the "subscribe to post" button checked)

Home System Help
My mom asked what I wanted for Christmas this year and suggested getting me a DVD player with a home theater system.
She wouldn't, of course, pay for the whole thing, but since I'm saving roughly $300 by not having to buy Steven, his parents, and his brothers Christmas gifts, I figured investing in a pretty good one wouldn't be a bad idea.
This is where you come in - I am at a total loss for what's good and what's not. I found this Panasonic 400W Home Theater System with Progressive-Scan DVD Changer & Hi-Fi VCR for about $400.
Good deal? Bad deal? Good brand? Bad brand? Someone who knows this stuff help me out. Feel free to suggest others, but keep in mind that this is about my price range. I guess that begs the question can you even get anything decent for that price? Speak out and let me know.

Save yourself some money and check this out: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00008N6XB/ref=br_fq_etk_ce_av__hmmm_1//104-4264162-8423962?v=glance&s=electronics&n=281056. Progressive scan, plays everything, sounds pretty damn good as long as you don't live in football stadium. If you need a STEREO as well as the dvd and vcr, then look at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/detail/-/electronics/B0000AJ5BC/reviews/104-4264162-8423962#b0000aj5bc4055. It buys you the am/fm and the ability to hook up your vcr to the stereo.
Posted by Wendell at December 5, 2003 12:50 AM
Be sure to make sure it has an "auxilary" option so that you can plug something in to it.
Personally, I would get a receiver with speakers (last time I priced one was in the $350 range at Best Buy) and get a separate DVD player. That way if one breaks, you don't have to replace the whole thing. I got a decent DVD player that plays mp3s at Fry's for under $50. It's just as good as my $200 one in my living room.
Posted by Christine at December 5, 2003 10:37 AM
Oh! I forgot to add - I listened to that one at Best Buy when I was shopping for mine and the sound was not as good as the other "complete" system I looked at that day. Everything seemed flat.
Let me know if you want in person help shopping for this stuff - I love electronics! :D
Posted by Christine at December 5, 2003 10:44 AM
If you're looking at the system strictly for home theater then they'll probably be okay. If you intend to play music on it as well, I think you'll be disappointed.
Also, if you can save any money by getting it without the progressive scan, go for it. Progressive scan is only useful if you have a High Definition TV (or you intend to get one soon...). Of course they might not even make non-progressive scan DVD players anymore.

Entry at Top?
Anyone know how to make an entry stay on top in MT? I could have sworn I saw this somewhere, but I'm coming up with a blank. Help?
Update: I was able to do it by changing my main index template and it looks like there's no easy way to do it in MT. It is on the requested features to be added, though, so maybe someday it'll be easy to do.

First.
You'd want to convert you entire web to PHP. (it's really easy trust me!)
Then you'd want to set up a side blog
here's some instructions

Your site is already PHP, just parsing (but you knew that already...) so you just need the info from Scripty. I was just going to go look for the link, but Todd beat me to it. :)

yeah, either <p class="one"> and <p class="the_other"> to distinguish ...
or if you have them nested inside different divs, in the style sheet you can have one>p {style} and the_other>p {different style} and it should work.

Lancome Color Focus - Help!
I had this great eyeshadow by Lancome from their Colour Focus line (it's what I'm wearing on my lids in this picture) that has some how gone missing. I've looked everywhere and even bought a bunch of shades on eBay that I hoped would be it (alas, none of them are).
What I'm looking for is someone who might now what this damn color is. I know it's been discontinued, but it was this great matte brown/cedar color that actually had glitter in it. I think it may have been called "Home."
Anyone used to work for Lancome? Anyone who has this color at home? It's driving me crazy that I can't figure out what it is!
Update: It turned out to be the color Take.

Name That Tune
Steven and I went to dinner tonight and they played this song over the loudspeaker. It's classic 80s and I swear the refrain of it is "Into the Night", but it's not the Benny Mardones song (the only one I can find). It's got a lot of piano in it. Anyone know what it is? It's driving me nuts.

Oddly enough, they included it in the soundtracks for one of the radio stations, and as per the law, they listed the credits of the songs, and after downloading like 10 or so songs, I found it.

Someone who's site I visited recently had some really cute animal smilies and I commented that I would love to come borrow them if I ever got smilies up. Now I've got smilies up and I have no idea who's site I was on. They had penguins and snails. Anyone know?

TiVo Problems
In September I upgraded my TiVo and have had absolutely no problems with it until this past week. Lately there is a problem with the saved shows having "skipping" in the sound.
The biggest problem, however, has been that the TiVo freezes up and I have to restart it by unplugging the power cord. It's missed several shows and when I checked the Recording History notes it says it was because the TiVo was either unplugged or the power was off. Btw, when restarting, it does the same skipping (think jerky play) during the TiVo intro.
The hard drive is probably pretty full, so I was wondering if maybe it's a bad hard drive issue. Has anyone else encountered this? It's a huge issue, so any help at all would be appreciated. I know several people who drop by here have units too.
FYI, the unit is about two years old.

We don't have any problems with ours, but I'm sure it's a matter of time. I think if you google around, you might be able to find out how to defrag the hard drive or something along those lines.

do you have the series 2?? I still have the old model and occasionally I do have to unplug and restart everything but usually when my cable turns off all together. It doesn't happen very often though so I never looked for a fix for it. It's one of the reasons I'll probably take them up on their upgrade offer.

Have A Tivo gxcebot tried to set it up for duel satellite setup. When conferming setup it locks up at 28%. any ideas would be appreciated

I also have a TiVo setup that locks up at 28% during the setup. Anyone have any ideas? It does not seem to be the access card, since it does it without. I have a Huges that works fine without problems.

I am a newbie. I recorded several shows and some of them I was able to watch and others, screen goes blank and black. It shows in the history as being recorded successfully! I tried restarting it a few times and it did not work. Any ideas?

Tivo hanging has been happening to me for the past 3 months getting more and more regular until recently when I've had to "hard re-boot" (power cycle) the box to get it working. It is now at the point where it hangs on the "powering up... please wait" screen every time so I cannot use the box at all. I have tried a complete rebuild of the system on several occasions which theoretically (according to Tivo support) initialises the disk drive. This would rule out disk fragmentation as the underlying fault. I am told the startup routine is run from ROM and not the hard drive, so this may rule out the disk altogether and point more towards an internal memory error. If anyone has any other ideas please let me know... I'm going to open mine up and check all the connections and seatings of hard drive and memory as they may have worked them selves loose. I'll post something up if I find anything. Btw... Has anybody found out where you can get the things repaired? No one seems to want to touch them!
Posted by Clive at February 11, 2004 04:32 PM
First, the "hanging/skipping" is the first signs that you are about to have serious problems. The next symptom will be "freezing" during the reboot process. Hughes says it is caused by faulty grounding on your coaxial cable, but I'm not buying that. Here is the number for Hughes tech support. They have RMA'd mine twice already in the last year. 954 597-2062. Good luck

Tivos are well known for hard drive problems. Ask any retail dealer about their return experience and you wil hear about the hard drive failure rate.
When you call up Sony and ask them about a bad product, they will first send you and replacement product, by one day express mail, and then ask you to return the bad unit. With Panasonic/Tivo, they tell you to return the unit to Long Beach, wait several weeks, and get used to it. I paid $1800 for a Pansonic DVR-57H and this is how I am treated.!!! I returned the unit the next weekend to Harvy Electronics for a full refund.
If you are going to charge premium prices, you have to provide preium service - not trailer park-level service.

Kept getting daily call failure (failed while loading data). Used phillips 'kickstart' a few times with no luck. Reset system deleting everything, and now it freezes on 28% checking satelite (have full signal strength).
Will install new harddrive tonight and hope that fixes it.

I'm one of about 12 people who have TiVo in England. I think it's great apart from the sound quality that goes crackly for about a minute then is fine for two then crackly again. Itas consitent as it is annoying. I have spoeken to TiVo about it and they say maybe i want to return it to them in Scotland for them to check out but frankly I don't...
Any ideas anyone out there?

We are on our second Hughes Direct TV TiVo. It is now exibiting the same problems as our original TiVo. The sensor that receives the infrared remote signal grradually deteriorates over a period of about two months. The remote works fine because the TV is instantly responsive to it's signal (but we tried a few changes of new batteries just in case). Let me know if anyone else is having this problem.
Posted by Jim Kowalski at May 24, 2004 09:00 AM
My TIVO has stopped working as well - it's a 4 month old Series one. Tried the unplug and plug trick several times with no luck. Remote will turn TV on and off but that's it. Damn.
Posted by frank bernard at June 8, 2004 07:41 PM
28% is a fault in the sowtware from directv. To get past it, redo guided setup but unplug both of your sat inputs, let if fail getting a signal and select fix this problem later, then plug in your cables and you should be good to go. It sometimes will get stuck on 70%, same problem, same solution. has nothing to do with your hard drive.

Have a Series Two. 18 months after purchase. Started freezing on playback. Recycled the power and could watch live programming.
Called Customer Support. Told that exchange was needed. Since we are out of warranrty, the cost is $149 plus shipping.

EverQuest Help
Oh, yes, I forgot to mention that this weekend I attempted to play EverQuest for the first time since approximately Christmas.
Not surprisingly, my account (paid via three month game card) has expired. When I went to enter in the game card number, I couldn't find the option to pay via card. The only things I could find were to pay by the monthly service.
Anyone know how to enter a pre-paid card? I'm stumped.

I got everquest platinum, the collection of eight, but it wont play.
It goes through the check updates process, but then when I press 'play' an error message pops up saying that it could not find the "d3d9.dll" file.
I've reinstalled and repair-installed but still the error.
What happened, is there an online correction or am I just screwed?

My in-laws have that game and it is much harder to play then rollercoaster tycoon. We were foreva starving the animals because they would not eat. I think it's some kind of stress level they are experiencing.. but I'm no zoo keeper! LOL
Posted by susan at January 26, 2003 05:50 PM
I am just a random visitor, but I was once addicted to...oh who am I kidding! I am addicted to Zoo Tycoon. I've been playing it for 2 months and I still can't figure out the point of the game if the animals are *never* happy. I've found that you need precise placement of the entrance or the zookeepers cannot get in the entrance (I still have no idea what exactly causes it, I think it is a bug because there is nothing in the gate's way), also while putting little islands in the water looks pretty, it makes for disaster later (the zookeepers cannot clean the poo off of it). I've only been able to keep my animals happy after spending thousands on their exhibit and making them mate (only to sell the original animals once the offspring give me a male and a female). I suppose I could have spared this whole paragraph by just saying the animals are incredibly (and that is an understatement) picky about their habitat. I can't even turn a profit (even with selling older animals) without charging my guests 100 dollars per ticket. With all the complaints I still play it because I think it is laced with some form of addictive psychological drug. At least unlike my other 'addiction'(The Sims) the animals don't actually whine audibly. I am sorry this doesn't help. I just hope you experienced these things too otherwise I think I am going mad.

Photoshop Error
Lately, when I've been working on Photoshop, I get the following error whenever I try to move a layer around: "Could not complete your request because the layer is locked." Click on the arrow in the toolbar and then click on the item you want - you may also need to right-click and select the correct layer from the list. Even though I'm just really learning Photoshop myself, I've encountered this problem when trying to 'move' something on one layer when another layer is selected. Hope it helps!
Posted by Richy C. at December 30, 2002 07:46 AM
Most of the time when that error occurs - it is the bottom layer which can't be moved, only selections you make with your marquee tool. Make sure in your layers "tab" that the lock is not clicked.
Does that help?
Posted by susan at December 30, 2002 08:10 AM
You can fix this by unchecking the "auto select layer" box in the top left.

Interesting. With PS Elements2 for OS X, I get the "Could not complete your request because the layer is locked" - error message regularly after startup and then every subsequent 10 or so minutes, then, after a time, it doesn't appear anymore.
And that WITHOUT ANY PICTURE open! ie. No layers, no pictures, just PS Elements only. It also happens after opening a picture (with all layers unlocked).
Really strange, really annoying, because the message just kills any operation currently in progress.
Any ideas?

Sure, just ask the CSS goddess ;)
add this to your a:hover section of your stylesheet:
border: dashed 1px green;
or whatever color you want. There's several other styles -- solid is probably the one you know, but there's dashed, dotted, double (which must be 3px or wider to be seen) and some others :)

Domain Pointing?
I need some help from someone out there with more scripting knowledge I have. I have a friend who has a domain at SWBell. He registered a new domain through 000 Domains, changed the DNS to point to SWBell, and set up a new directory for the new site. Now, the big question is how the hell do you change a .htaccess file to redirect traffic to that URL to the new subdirectory? I found some Redirect Domain Pointer code and tried it out, but nothing's happening. Anyone know what to do next? Help!

Let's see if I understand the problem. He has an existing website, hosted in some directory at swbell. He's purchased another domain, and has another website in another directory on the same account at swbell?
Posted by wendell at December 6, 2002 01:18 AM
If the server is running Apache, then it'll probably need to be configured to recognise the new domain name as a 'virtual host'. Otherwise a browser will try requesting that host from the server and the server will go 'Huh? What am I meant to do with this?'.
As the DNS will just translate www.example.com to an IP 10.0.0.69 , it is up to the server on that IP to decide what to do with it. Unfortently - this usually requires a change in the Apache config (httpd.conf) file: changing .htaccess will NOT help (as the server needs to know which 'virtual host' it is _before_ it can even find the .htaccess file).
If he can't convince SWBell to change the server configuration file (which should take less than 30 seconds), then the only other way would be to use a 'redirect' method as offered by some DNS provides - basically they 'host' your DNS entry and just 'frame' your 'real' site.
(Oh - Microsoft IIS/Netscape IPlanet etc will all need their own configuration changes)
Posted by Richy C. at December 6, 2002 07:52 AM
I was just going to say the same thing - SWBell needs to be told about the new domain so that they can set their DNS server up to handle it. Otherwise it's hitting their servers right now and not going anywhere because SWBell says "who is this?" and doesn't know what to do with it. Also, they may not allow multi-hosted domains. (Several domains in one account.) Some companies do, others don't. Some companies allow domain B to point to the same site as domain A, but not to a separate site.
Confused yet?
Oh, and I don't think all platforms use .htaccess files. If they are running under Windows, then it might not be an option at all.
Posted by Christine at December 6, 2002 02:30 PM
What is the situation with the new domain name? Is SWBell handling the DNS for it and pointing it at the same location as the original domain? I'm using a PHP trick to redirect multiple domains which are all pointing to the same place -- that would work if domain pointing is set up.
Posted by Mike at December 7, 2002 07:37 PM
Redirect / http://www.newdomain.com/
Basically... here is the relevant entry in the Apache manual: http://httpd.apache.org/docs/mod/mod_alias.html#redirect . :)

What skin are you seeing that one? I had the newer blue-ish teal one, and can see them, but I changed to the picture fish icon one and don't see the words.
I checked that stylesheet and in the body, you have this:

So anything that's not defined will be white, on a white background. If you change that to #000000, you'll have better luck!! :)

MP3 Player Question
Several months ago I won an mp3 player in Southwestern Bell's Digital Madness Sweepstakes. It finally came in on Monday, but I haven't really had a chance to look at it until today. I listen to my mp3s on Winamp at both work and home and don't really want to carry an mp3 player around in the gym (even though this one is tiny). What I was really hoping is that I could get a converter thing and play them through my car's radio. The mp3 player is a RCA RD1000 Kazoo, so if anyone knows if this could be done, could you let me know? Thanks!

This link has a couple that will allow you to plug into the headphone jack of the MP3 player and then feed the output into your car stereo. There is one with a cassette plugin and another that uses a tiny FM transmitter (for if your car has only a CD player):

Yah, that's what I was going to suggest. Our car only has a radio so we plug the transmitter into the headphone jack of the mp3 or cd player, sit it up on the dash and try to find a good radio station to get it to come through nice and clear. We got it at radio shack and it works great. Only problem with ours is the switch on the transmitter switches on too easily so the batteries do not last.

Speaking of Picture Fish...
I was surfing Picture Fish at home this weekend and when I choose a different color and went to either an individual picture or one of the archives, it always went back to the default color, which is blue. I was adding my mom's picture to it at work and when I went to view the site, the color changes stayed in place when I visited other pages. Could someone (or a few someones) go test it out and let me know if the color changer worked for you? I would certainly appreciate it!

Does anyone know why my DoSomething would be adding an extra space after the title of the song? I checked the templates and there are no spaces, but when it writes to webout.php, there's one there. I even checked the ID tag on the mp3 file itself and it's not there. Anyone else have this problem?

CuteFTP Problem
I've been using CuteFTP to upload files and to make edits to the code. A few days ago, for whatever reason, the thing has slowed to a crawl whenever I do anything in it. It takes forever to refresh a window, open something up in the editor, upload a file, absolutely anything. Has anyone else had a problem with it or messed with the settings and know what the issue might be? It's driving me crazy! Thanks!

FlashFXP works faster for me then CuteFTP ever did. The interface is similar and ... well, I like it! (Jenn recommended it to me...) FlashFXP.com is where I got it from.

I've used the same version of WSFTP Pro for over 7 years and it's worked just great for me. Every time I've tried an upgrade, it adds a feature or annoyance I don't want.

Birthday Counter?
Does anyone have a good, easy-to-use birthday counter that I can stick on my page? Thanks!

Hmmm. I used to have one, but I can't find it right at the moment. You could email Lee @ bluezfire.org and ask her, she has a cool PHP script that does it....

Looking For an Image...
I've been going skin happy lately (and should have a new one to unveil either today or tomorrow) and I want to make a spring theme, but I'm having a hard time finding any garden images or flower images that I don't have to pay for that I like. Since I just blog for fun, I can't really afford to spend money on a new skin. Anyone got any good places to find free images at?

I have a couple flower sets on my page (http://love-productions.com/graphics/setlist2.html) - check out clover and apple blossom and maybe even the ivy green one :) If you want to use either of them, I'd be happy to convert them over to MT code for you :)

Anyone See the Error?
For the past couple of days I've noticed that I have an error somewhere on the index page. For the life of me, I cannot figure out what it is. Currently, it says Line: 476, Char: 21, error: Expected ';', Code:0. If anyone can find out why it's doing that, you'd have my eternal gratitude.

I do see that it shows an error in IE. I'm not positive what is causing it, but I know that in the past, post titles with ' symbols in them have caused me problem... That's the only thing that jumps out at me as maybe an issue, though!

Font Preview
I know there are programs out there that lets you preview fonts, including ones that aren't installed in your font directory. Anyone care to share one with me?

I highly recommend FontLister for a at-home-free-kinda-program!! I have my fonts sorted by type into folders, and it lets me open a folder in FL, and it temporarily loads the fonts in that folder to memory. So if I know I'm gonna use a fancy font, I load that folder before getting into Photoshop :) And then I can preview and stuff right inside FL :)
Hmmm, I should post this info on my site - I bet other people could use this :)
