You know, the Chicken Dance was a big issue at my wedding. The wedding was in New York but several of the guests were from Wisconsin. My wife (a New Yorker) didn't believe that there was such a thing as the Chicken Dance or that it was ever played at weddings. She won out over the eager guests, but I'm going to show her this post to prove to her I (and my friends) are not crazy!

Horoscope
I rarely check my horoscopes, but today's really caught my eye:
Romance is an ongoing puzzle, but you won't let it upset you. If someone thinks you're great, why is he or she trying to change you? Maybe this is about lovers working to help each other reach their full potential. Give as good as you get.

That'll Do, Pig.
I just got done watching Babe, probably the most enchanting film ever made. Am I the only one who cries pretty much through the whole thing, especially at the end?
This is another one of those highly recommended movies for everyone regardless of age. The movie is simply priceless, especially the ending. Really, I'm not sure who the better actor is - stoic James Cromwell or the cast of animals?
On that note, I'll leave you with some lyrics that I wish for each and every one of you:
If I had words to make a day for you,
I'd sing you a morning golden and new.
I would make this day last for all time,
Give you a night deep with moonshine.
Merry Christmas, everyone.

Lady Luck
For some reason, there is a ladybug in my room. I figured - it being December and all - that they'd all be dead by now, but nope, there's one running around the top of my lamp. Since ladybugs are supposed to be lucky, I'll take it as a sign that my luck is going to change for the new year.

Ladies' Night
I just got done watching a special show that The World Poker Tour put on where they invited six of the top women poker players to play against each other. What an excellent show it was! I was really surprised who won and the playing from everyone was phenomenal.
The Travel Channel is showing reruns right now, so if you haven't taken my advice and watched in the past, now would be a great time to start since the new season hasn't started yet.

Singin' in the Rain
I watched Singin' in the Rain tonight - my absolute favorite movie of all time.
If you've never seen this movie - whether you like musicals or not - this is a must-see movie. It's funny, romantic, got great song and dance numbers, and of course, there's the irrepressible, irresistible Gene Kelly (who not only did the singing and dancing, but also arranged all the musical numbers and co-directed).
I just adore this film so much. From the unforgettable image of Gene Kelly standing in the rain, smiling so wide (he actually got really sick while doing that number) to Donald O'Conner hamming it up and running up walls for laughs. To Debbie Reynolds shooting Gene Kelly down in the care and Jean Hagen, so beautiful, but oh, so funny sounding.
I was looking at IMDB info for the movie tonight and I was shocked to find out Kelly was forty when he did it. Forty! I had no idea. I knew that Debbie Reynolds was really young, but she was only twenty when she was in it. Talk about an age discrepancy between the stars, but I never would have guessed.
So, yet again, just me waxing rhapsodic about another of my favorite movies.

Easily my favorite musical of all time. I have the original DVD release and I've been contemplating trading up for the two disc version. I can honestly say I watch this one at least once every two months. Gene Kelly is one of the greatest entertainers of our time.
Posted by KB at December 18, 2003 09:22 AM
Singin' in the Rain has always been one of my favourite musicals. That, "Gigi", "An American in Paris", "King and I" and "Royal Wedding". Not in that order... it depends on the day which order they go into.
Posted by amber at December 18, 2003 09:40 AM
I LOVE Gene Kelly!
Posted by Empress at December 18, 2003 05:01 PM
Of course, the most delightful part of the film is how they dubbed the dubber at the end. Although Debbie Reynolds played the character who dubbed Lina Lamont (played by Jean Hagen), in fact another actress dubbed Debbie's voice in the last number (a sort of cinematic joke of the director, no doubt). My favorite line (among many): "Why, I make more money than - than - than Calvin Coolidge, put together!" I still won't forget the vaudeville dancers playing Fit as a Fiddle or Moses Supposes. Oh, how I miss that movie. BTW, another hilarious music comedy I recommend is Hear My Song (Irish). It's the Irish Singin in the Rain. These kinds of movies are great mood picker uppers!
Posted by Robert Nagle at December 18, 2003 05:16 PM
I love Gene Kelly - so handsome.. he could sing, dance ::sigh:: My girls, 7 and 3, love watching it with me. They giggle over Jean Hagen's voice and laugh out loud during Donald O'Connor's "Make 'Em Laugh" routine.
They don't make them like they used to make 'em.

Multi-Table Fun
Paradise Poker (where I play online) has recently started multi-table tournaments where literally thousands of players can play against each other.
They had a free one tonight and I had my best placing yet. Out of 2,113 players, I came in 138th place and won the princely sum of $1.00. Still, it's a pretty good finish and I'm pretty proud.

Partying with the Cybertoad
This Saturday was Elaine's thirtieth birthday party and I was lucky enough to be in attendance for much merriment, margaritas, and pińata bashing (browse her photo album to see what I'm talking about).
What really amused me the most about the photo album were the two pictures I'm in. In the first one I look like some evil demon has possessed me. What the hell is up with that face? In the second one (with Mike) I look like a normal individual. Quite the dichotomy, huh?

Excellent Movie and Soundtrack
So, I have close to 9,000 mp3s after I burned the several hundred CDs that I owed plus miscellaneous mp3s that just appeared on my hard drive by themselves, I swear.
Lots of time when I listen to music on my computer, I load all the mp3s and hit the "Shuffle" button on WinAmp just to see what I get. If I don't feel like listening, to the next song we go.
Tonight, while spinning the music roulette wheel, I got a track from The Last of the Mohicans soundtrack. Not only is that an incredible soundtrack, the move rocks. Every time I see it on, I am forced to watch it, even though I own the DVD and can, theoretically, watch it any time I want to.
I've read some of James Fenimore Cooper (though not this book) and I found him impossible to get through, but this movie is just perfection to me. Michael Mann's direction is wonderful, the cinematography is gorgeous, and it's an incredible love story, both the one between Hawkeye and Cora and the subtle one between Alice and Uncas. At the end of the movie where Magua is gesturing to Alice to come with him and instead she makes the choice she does (don't want to spoil it for anyone that hasn't seen it), just grips my heart every time.
So, no real point to this post, just felt like waxing rhapsodic about one of my favorite movies.

Working Out
Excellent! My Winsor Pilates DVDs showed up today!
Since my goal is to loose eight more pounds and get tone by the beginning of the year, this is great timing! Now I need to see if I can borrow my brother's DVD player for my room. Somehow I just can't see myself doing pilates in the living room in front of my whole family!

i recently picked up a copy of pilates on DVD, but thus far have been too chicken to try them. I always worry that i'll do something very wrong which will lead to more pain.

Retail Therapy
My brother is a strong believer in the soothing power of retail therapy. I figured since now none of my clothes fit me (I've lost almost twenty pounds), I may as well go and get some nice basics that I can mix and match for things like parties and dates. I hit Banana Republic and got three skirts (two long and one short), a top, a top with a cami underneath, and the best pair of pen striped pants ever.
I had Russell take pictures for me, but they all came out looking weird (I am just so unphotogenic most times except for this one and I've still got some weird kind of look on my face). Since it was the only decent one, though, it had to go up. Check out the sexy new me! (And I'm not tall at all - not sure how I got lucky enough to find pants to give me that illusion!)

Ooooh, hello fancy pants! Hehe :) I love that shirt, I've always wanted one like it, but unfortunately I'm a bit on the large side and they don't carry my size at the Banana. Bastards!
Re: Burn it...I saw the other day that you were going to send out copies of your spring & summer mixes to the people who were in your group rather than making a new mix. Well...since I have your spring & summer mixes, don't worry about me (like I'm sure you were stressing over me anyway...haha!)

Dietary Questions
With all the hype that the South Beach Diet has been getting lately, I took a look at it and it seems that it's one of those "no carbs, higher fat" diets.
Now, I know several people have been either on it or thinking of trying it out, so I was wondering if anyone with any health know how could do me a favor.
Thanks to Christine, I found this place called Fit Day that keeps track of what you eat and your exercise activities.
I posted what I was considering making my daily diet here and I was worried that while I don't have a lot of carbs, I have a ton of fat. Steven always told me that it wasn't the fat that was my problem, but the carbs.
Anyone care to offer up their opinion?

Personally, I have a hell of a time giving up the carbs. Therefore, I have done Weight Watchers and LOVE it. It actually works. You may not think you are losing weight as fast, but I feel for me that this is something I could stick to and work with forever.
Posted by Adelle at December 8, 2003 10:58 AM
I've lost a bit of weight recently, mostly from cutting my fat to 30g a day and limiting carbs where I can. If you're getting a lot of exercise, you can up the carbs a bit, you'll need it.
I get virtually no exercise cause I'm a lazy-butt, so I've cut out most of the bread, potatoes and pasta that make me full but a fatty. I went from a 16 jeans to a 14 without even really noticing that I was "dieting", and now those jeans are getting baggy too.
Good luck!
Posted by Danelle at December 8, 2003 11:47 AM
I believe in limiting PROCESSED/white carbs such as white bread, pasta, refined sugars and the like.
I try to eat smaller amounts of white rice but can't cut it out completely for cultural reasons.
SBD makes a lot of sense to me, and Atkins, if done properly...
Posted by Zorbs at December 8, 2003 02:52 PM
I agree with Adelle. I don't think all carbs are evil - you just have to watch what you eat. I'm *way* too picky of an eater to do the South Beach diet. Half of the recipes in the book made me want to hurl.
Personally, I think you need to watch what you eat, and then work on toning exercises - I really think it would do the trick for you after all the weight you've lost already.
Posted by Christine at December 8, 2003 10:59 PM
I couldn't resist adding my two cents. I carried extra weight for years until I tried Canyon Ranch portion control. You don't have to count or measure anything, just eat spa type food most of the time. Buy their new cookbook, or buy all three books if you like them.
Posted by Julia at December 9, 2003 04:54 AM
I just started the SBD on Monday. I haven't have any cravings yet. I'm a very picky eater. So far so good. I'm going to check out Fit Day.
Posted by Ash at December 10, 2003 03:36 PM
Just a little info on the south beach diet - since we've been doing it for the past week. It is definitely NOT a "low carb/high fat" diet. That would be Atkins - and this is nothing like that. Actually the diet is more well-balanced than anything I've done before, and the weight loss is SURPRISING. (Who would have known that just "eating right" would mean an automatic weight loss!)
The diet is about eating the RIGHT carbs - (like the ones you get from vegetables (not all, certain ones) and some dairy) - pasta and bread are out in the beginning, but after a week or so, they're brought back - but only in whole wheat types. There is "high protien" but only those with low fat as well. You can't just go eat bacon and eggs and call it a day. Eggs, yes, but bacon is limited, and only low fat (I think it's restricted to turkey bacon). And when you have protien, it's important to have vegetables as well because it slows digestion and will make you feel "full" longer. The diet really gets you looking at what you're eating and what it contains. And what it boils down to is that anything "pre-made" is USUALLY not good for you. (unfortunately - because it means you have to preare EVERYTHING yourself)
My only complaint on the diet is that it's EXPENSIVE to buy so many vegetables, and all the low fat stuff. Our grocery bill for the last two weeks has literally doubled.
But I'm CONVINCED this is a healthy way to eat. Personally, I think there's a TON of foods you're allowed. But if you're not a vegetable person, South Beach may not be for you. Because I think what makes it work is the low fat/protien/vegetable combo.
I'll stop taking up your whole comments area now. LOL! If you have any questions about the diet - feel free to email me. :D
(FYI - I just tried to post this, and it gave me an error with the "subscribe to post" button checked)

Burn It - The Fall Edition Delay
Understandly, I've had no desire to do much with the last Burn It exchange over the last few weeks. At this point, I've received a ton of the discs (I'm still getting my mail from Steven, so if you have yours to send to me, go ahead and send it to the Sugar Pine address for now), but I haven't gone through and checked off who's sent one and who hasn't. I'll probably do that this weekend, but no promises.
However, I don't think that I'm in any kind of mood to make a mix for this exchange, so those of you in my group will be receiving two discs - my Spring and Summer editions instead. Again, I can't promise that this will be ready this weekend, but I'm going to try.
Like I said in this post, I've got to start moving on and keeping busy with other stuff, so I will try and work my way through the 80(!) discs or so that showed up. It may be a while before I listen to them, though. Sometimes music is just too unsafe when you're feelings are freshly raw.

Home System Help
My mom asked what I wanted for Christmas this year and suggested getting me a DVD player with a home theater system.
She wouldn't, of course, pay for the whole thing, but since I'm saving roughly $300 by not having to buy Steven, his parents, and his brothers Christmas gifts, I figured investing in a pretty good one wouldn't be a bad idea.
This is where you come in - I am at a total loss for what's good and what's not. I found this Panasonic 400W Home Theater System with Progressive-Scan DVD Changer & Hi-Fi VCR for about $400.
Good deal? Bad deal? Good brand? Bad brand? Someone who knows this stuff help me out. Feel free to suggest others, but keep in mind that this is about my price range. I guess that begs the question can you even get anything decent for that price? Speak out and let me know.

Save yourself some money and check this out: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00008N6XB/ref=br_fq_etk_ce_av__hmmm_1//104-4264162-8423962?v=glance&s=electronics&n=281056. Progressive scan, plays everything, sounds pretty damn good as long as you don't live in football stadium. If you need a STEREO as well as the dvd and vcr, then look at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/detail/-/electronics/B0000AJ5BC/reviews/104-4264162-8423962#b0000aj5bc4055. It buys you the am/fm and the ability to hook up your vcr to the stereo.
Posted by Wendell at December 5, 2003 12:50 AM
Be sure to make sure it has an "auxilary" option so that you can plug something in to it.
Personally, I would get a receiver with speakers (last time I priced one was in the $350 range at Best Buy) and get a separate DVD player. That way if one breaks, you don't have to replace the whole thing. I got a decent DVD player that plays mp3s at Fry's for under $50. It's just as good as my $200 one in my living room.
Posted by Christine at December 5, 2003 10:37 AM
Oh! I forgot to add - I listened to that one at Best Buy when I was shopping for mine and the sound was not as good as the other "complete" system I looked at that day. Everything seemed flat.
Let me know if you want in person help shopping for this stuff - I love electronics! :D
Posted by Christine at December 5, 2003 10:44 AM
If you're looking at the system strictly for home theater then they'll probably be okay. If you intend to play music on it as well, I think you'll be disappointed.
Also, if you can save any money by getting it without the progressive scan, go for it. Progressive scan is only useful if you have a High Definition TV (or you intend to get one soon...). Of course they might not even make non-progressive scan DVD players anymore.

The Hardest Thing
I've talked to Steven a few times this week and while he's said everytime that we can talk in January about our relationship and see what happens, he's been very adament about the fact that he needs to date (he keeps bringing up that damn Miss Match episode where the couple date other people to make sure that what they have is what they want; I keep pointing out that they end up together, which he's also said). He said that there is a possibility that we could get back together and if we do, it's for the long run and what's a few months in the meantime? He is frustrating me so badly, though, that now that I truly know and understand what our problems are and have already begun to work on mine that he refuses to just get back together "since we'll have learned nothing." That and the fact that he snagged some pictures from Picture Fish for his Match.com ad (including our last anniversary picture) makes me want to kick him in the shins.
I guess this whole rambling bit is to help me come to terms with the hardest thing that I will ever have to do - let him go for now. I have to stop talking about him and thinking about him and just try and move on. I still love him with all of my heart, but it's tearing me up inside. This was the man that I thought I was going to marry - to have by my side always.
I've got two parties to go to in the upcoming weeks and I think a night of clubbing (no, not killing baby seals; dancing and drinking) will be in my future. Maybe I'll get some cute, tall guys to take me out while I'm at it.
I hurt a lot, but I've gotten through stuff like this before and I can get through it again. I'll concentrate on me this month and just try and have a good time. Lord knows Steven's doing that, so it's my only option. He keeps telling me to have faith that we'll get back together (by his own admission he's hard to get along with and doesn't like a lot of people), but that's so hard to do when I feel that he's giving nothing for me to have faith in.
So, that's where we stand. Good, bad, or indifferent - I ride the emotional roller coaster every day. I still owe a ton of people e-mails and that's my plan for at least part of the weekend. Thanks for all of the support and for all of the love that has been pouring in my direction. It is much appreciated, even if I haven't let you know.
Also, to the person that sent me Graham Masterson's Trauma and This Book Will Change Your Life: 365 Daily Instructions for Hysterical Living, thank you. There's only your name (which I don't recognize) and no e-mail address so I can't thank you privately.

I am so proud of you Kymberlie! You really do have the right attitude and I know you have the strength. I look forard to seeing you at my fiesta next weekend.
Posted by cybertoad at December 4, 2003 02:43 PM
The book "Love Must Be Tough" deals with exactly what you are facing with Steven.
It's written by the "Focus on the Family" guru, James Dobson but the book touches only very lightly on "God" stuff, so don't let that turn you off to it.
My husband did the same thing to me when he left. He wanted to date people and then revisit our marriage a few months later, and he'd "let me know".
And like a poor lost puppy, I let him do that. I stayed emotionally linked to him and hoped like heck that he'd pick me in the end.
Well, I read that book and "things they started a changin'."
I adopted some of the suggestions and it was an amazing transformation. All of the sudden, hubby was chasing ME! But by then I was on my way to healing, adopting a new attitude that that book gave me - and then it was my turn to kick him to the curb.
Now 3 years later I'm SOOO happy I'm not with him, and I've found the absolute love of my life.
We're pulling for you - and woo hoo on your date!

Coke Addiction Kicked
Been wondering how I was doing on my challenge to kick my Coke addiction?
The answer is pretty damn good, actually. Since then I've had maybe a half a Coke total (easier to grab a few sips of one of those in the car than trying to bring a glass of lemonade with me) and it's amazing how sweet it tastes. I even tried my mom's Diet Coke and it wasn't even that bad.
I think this is going to have the most positive impact on my weight and on me never becoming diabetic, something I've always been a bit worried about since my dad was diagnosed like seven years ago.
So, go me! If I would have known it would have been that easy to go from six cans a day to none, I would have done it a long time ago.
So, now that I've lost a lot of weight and look extremely hot, any cute guys out there free on Friday?

I'm free friday. ;)

I credit the switch from Coke to Diet Coke as one of the principal factors contributing to my weight loss. I got used to the different taste pretty quickly. Now I can't really drink a regular Coke...it tastes TOO sweet.
Great job, Kymberlie! You are da bomb!!

i cant believe that coka cola is what i'm reading about. i came on this site to try and help a friend who i think has a COCAINE addiction and make sure i stop touching the stuff too. when i read the title coke addiction kicked....i thought it was goin to be a story of how somone got off the drug. i just cant believe "coke" is what your talking about. by the way, im not a pop drinker...but coke is good i dont see what the problem is...theres way worse addictions out there

you are mediumturquoise #48D1CC |
Your dominant hues are green and blue. You're smart and you know it, and want to use your power to help people and relate to others. Even though you tend to battle with yourself, you solve other people's conflicts well.
Your saturation level is medium - You're not the most decisive go-getter, but you can get a job done when it's required of you. You probably don't think the world can change for you and don't want to spend too much effort trying to force it.
Your outlook on life is brighter than most people's. You like the idea of influencing things for the better and find hope in situations where others might give up. You're not exactly a bouncy sunshine but things in your world generally look up.
