You Can Have my TiVo When You Pry It Out of My Cold Dead Hands.

There a bill out there that might be voted on in the Senate that should concern TiVo and other DVR owners.

The bill would let people use technology to skip objectionable content - like a gory or sexually explicit scene - in films, a right that we already have. However, under the proposed law, skipping any commercials or promotional announcements would be prohibited. The proposed law also includes language from the Pirate Act (S2237), which would permit the Justice Department to file civil lawsuits against alleged copyright infringers.

So, not only would you not be able to skip commercials with your DVR, you could be sued for doing so. You also would be forced to sit through previews on DVDs. Critics also argue that the vague language could apply to a person who uses iTunes.

Like Mac said, "(i)n essence, this bill is a gift to corporate interests - if you’ve been paying attention, lo, these last four years it should come as no surprise whatsoever."

Have I mentioned how much I hate this fucking administration? Go here to write your Senators and urge them to vote against HR2391.

This is ludicrous! How would it be enforced?

Anyone remember the old TV show 'Max Headroom'? On there it was illegal to even turn off your TV. Yikes!! Was it not Marx who said that religion was an opiate for the masses (or something like that)? Is that not what TV has become today?

As for enforcement - all DVRs (either stand alone units or software) would have to have changes that would track and give feedback as to when you hit that skip button or something like DVD players, which already have something that will prevent using say the menu button. I ran into a situation recently where you could not hit the skip button during the final credits of 'The L Word'. You could still hit the Menu button though. Weird.

As for, I think it was Mac's blog, that asked if next you could be fined for getting up during a commercial and going to the bathroom - the nice Nielson people already have (and have had for many years in reality) a system that can count how many people are actually watching a TV show. How hard would it be to build onto that something that would be able to track that what you are watching is a commercial and the number of bodies in front of the TV has changed? Can you say big brother? I knew that you could. (With all apologies to Mr. Rogers.)

You are aware that Tivo's going to start showing you popup ads when you fast forward through commercials, right?
