If I Had Words...

Back on Christmas Day I made a wish for all of you, quoting the lyrics from If I Had Words on the Babe soundtrack. I've been playing both versions of the song (one sung by James Cromwell and one sung by the trio of singing mice) repeatedly since I just adore this little song.

I'm an incredibly nice person, so I thought I'd put both versions of the song up for download so you could listen to them as well. I have no idea of when I'm going to pull them, so save them today. Enjoy! (Remember to right click and choose "Save As" to get this music on your own computer.)

- If I Had Words (James Cromwell)
- If I Had Words (Singing Mice)

If I had words to make a day for you,
Id sing you a morning golden and new.
I would make this day last for all time,
Give you a night deep with moonshine.

I understand the melody to come from Camille Saint-Saens third ("organ") symphony, but maybe he borrowed the riff from Beethoven... would like to check that out! Thanks to previous comments

Does anyone know any other verses. I'm sure I heard an upbeat version of this song once with more verses.

.: Pat said on March 18, 2004 03:40 AM :: link it :.

It was a big hit in the seventies back in the UK by one hit wonders Scott Fitzgerald and Yvonne Keeley. I had to do some research after watching 'Babe' as the song was so familiar but I couldn't quite place it. I'm sure there were more verses and it was a top twenty hit!

.: PC said on May 5, 2004 10:35 AM :: link it :.

There's also a version recorded by The Vards & Westlife.

Thank you for having this here to share - my sweet dog is terminally ill and that song popped into my head and has stayed with me as expressive of how I love her. Thanks for the comfort. Just found a CD recording of Saint-Saen's Symphony #3, Opus 78, which is the classical theme of this tune available on Amazon.

i think it originaly was a hawiian song...if i had words

.: trina said on September 22, 2004 05:44 AM :: link it :.

it is a hawiian song sung by a lady named Keali`i Reichel

.: Roll said on September 26, 2004 07:56 PM :: link it :.

Keali`i Reichel is KANE (man... not woman!) He sings the song "If I had Words" on his album E O Mai, where it is credited as the Theme from Babe.

I would love to get the original version you all are talking about, the Saint-Saen's Symphony #3 Opus 78. If you know where to get it I would appreciate knowing, thanks guys!

Hey, I have been looking for that version of the song for months. I was excited to find this page, but the link didn't download for me. Is it broken? or did I just choose a bad day. And is there any other way to get the song? It would make my world.

Thank you for putting the song & lyrics here! It is beautiful & I am going to buy every version of it. I loved it in Babe --- that whole movie is just so cute and sweet that I cried through the entire thing.

.: diana said on December 23, 2004 08:10 AM :: link it :.

Thanks so much for posting the songs up here. I've watched the film so many times and loved this song, never known what is was called or the lyrics. Watched babe today on BBC1 and it was as good as I remember it from before. Best bits being when farmer Hogget sings to babe and the credits when you hear the mice's version of the song. Also the lyrics differ between the versions. The mice one is as stated above but James' version goes "If I had words to make a day for you, I sing you a morning golden and true, I would make this day last for all time, Then fill the night deep in moonshine" - hope this helps in some way

.: Lewis Howlett said on December 24, 2004 10:56 AM :: link it :.

My sister passed this movie along to me when I had my son.
He loves the movie, and when Farmer Hoggett dances and sings "If I had Words", he moves his feet and claps at the end!
I love that song!!!!

.: Leslie said on January 15, 2005 07:26 PM :: link it :.

"Babe" is my favourite movie. My second was "Army of Darkness" with Bruce Campbell alias Ash. I know its a grazy combination. A nice movie with friendly animals and the other a funny but also scary action movie but I think it doesnt matter. Thank you for the great song because I don´t can buy the CD in the Shop. Only at Internetshops but I hate to buy things via Internet. To much Risk.

.: Claus said on January 22, 2005 01:10 PM :: link it :.

Try Limewire and search Scott Fitzgerald and Yvonne Keeley, or try just the song title "If I had Words" or even try Saint-Saens you will soon find it. Good luck

.: Max said on December 27, 2005 07:07 PM :: link it :.

This song is really touchy! I watch the film Babe over and again just to listen to it. If I has a piglet, definitely I would sing this to the swine!

Each version of this song has truly touched my soul. When I hear it, I feel God so strongly. When James Cromwell started singing, tears came to my eyes. Then I started singing along, over and over again. Finally, I had to put it as the message on my voicemail. Thank you so much for posting this. And what a nice surprise to see that I am not the only one who was so thoroughly affected.

I haven't heard the James Cromwell version of "If I had words" . I think that Westlife featuring the Vard Sisters is a very nice version if you are not so keen on reggae by SCOTT FITZGERALD & YVONNE KEELEY

I've processed the mice version and dropped the pitch down to something approaching a real person. It sounds great! Should I/how can I post it? I'd hate to offend by posting something sacriligeous, but I got tired of the squeaky mice and I love this song.
