The Ring
I watched The Ring a few weeks ago and keep meaning to post my thoughts about it, but I never quite gotten around to it until now. I'll put everything in the "Read More" section so nothing gets ruined if you haven't seen the movie yet. For those who want my opinion withouth the spoilers - good movie, especially if you like the genre, but not as scary as it could have been.
First of all, I have to say that the movie was shot just gorgeously - something you rarely see in a horror movie. Most horror movies pay very little attention to the cinematography of the movie, but not this one. You can see the amount of detail that went into the look of this picture from the way the rain plays on the car windshield to the way the tree lights up at sunset to the view of the car driving through the mist on the island. I also loved how the movie had this greenish tint - almost like light was filtering through water.
While I didn't think the movie itself was that frightening, I thought that the video within the movie was extremely creepy and well-done. The strange seemingly unrelated images were sometimes disturbing for obvious reasons (like the thumb being impaled on a nail), but several of them weren't (the girl backing away from the mirror, the ladder standing alone against the wall), which made them almost more disturbing because you didn't know why they were on there. I must say that the video had more impact on me than the whole movie did.
I was a bit disappointed in the ending. It felt like a cop-out to me, wrapping it up in a neat little package, having Noah make a video tape and sending it out among the world. It just seemed false to me some how. Also, even if you think you've defeated the bad force, if you've watched a video that kills you, when your television comes on by itself, don't try to shut if off. Leave so that you're not paralyzed with fear when the creepy girl comes out to get you. I don't care if you do think you're safe. Just go.
Oh, yes, I also had this weird moment when I thought the couple was going to take Noah off and kill him. When they got him from her sister's house and were driving home, for some reason I got this strong feeling that they were taking him to the well to drown - like some sacrifice. I have no idea what it was about that scene, but that was my first impression.
So, well worth watching, especially if you're a fan of the genre. Best horror movie ever? No, but still pretty good.

.: skits said on March 25, 2003 07:11 PM :: link it :.I didn’t like the second ending either. I thought it should have ended when the couple was back together again and the kid was in the back seat.
Needless to say – it had some very scary elements.
Btw -- the kid was real strange.
I agree it wasn't very scary but it kind of freaked me out
I have to agree with kara that kid was weird.
