Judge Rules, "Be Responsible For Yourself!"

I am so glad to hear that the judge on the McDonald's obesity suit threw it out of court today.

If the father of the one girl seriously thought McDonald's was healthy, then he has got some serious problems. How can you not tell that stuff is bad?

Maybe this will help stop the flood of lawsuits by people who clearly accept no responsibilities for their own actions and expect others to pay for their misfortune.

I feel the plaintifs took a wrong approach to this case. Instead of arguing on the grounds of healthy food, they should have tackled the issue of portion sizes. A Washington Post editorial pointed out that "...[the 1972] "large" [portion of french fries] was smaller than a medium serving today." This is appalling.

People can and do argue that there are smaller items on the menu, and there are indeed alternatives, but it's clear that McDonald's has had some blame in increasing its portion sizes and misleading its consumers.

It's a big mistake to characterize the millions of people who have suffered major health problems because of the food they've been served -- practically by having it shoved down their throats in the form of advertising, peer pressure, and so forth -- as a lack of personal responsibility. Cigarette manufacturers tried that same argument when people started getting angry, and litigating, about cancer deaths. I applauded this lawsuit and I'll applaud any new lawsuit that winds up in court. There has to be some accountability on the part of those who manufacture or sell goods, and this is how we ensure that accountability in this country, for good or ill.

Oops, I meant to write that it was mistake to characterize these people as irresponsible. The two halves of that sentence didn't quite match up. That's what I get for half-arsed redrafting.

When I heard the outcome myself on the news it made me happy. The lawsuit also made me mad. Last time I checked fast food restaurants are not listed on the food pyramid. No where does it say you should have fast food as part of your nutritional intake.

If someone has health problem due to their diet they brought upon themselves. If a child has health problem due to their diet then the parents are at fault, maybe the parents should be sued instead.

I don’t think any fast food restaurant has an obligation to provide “healthy” foods on the menu. If you don’t like what’s on the menu then cook for yourself. At least you will always know how well it was prepared, and it will save you money.
People are too damn lazy, and too eager to blame someone else for their own destruction.
