Exhausted, but What a Good Day!
I got back from my day out with Jeanna about an forty-five minutes ago and have been catching up on some stuff, but since I want to download the 400 e-mail messages waiting for me (no, seriously, 400. And that's without spam), I figured I should make this post while it was still pretty fresh.
We got to the museum and went into the Titanic Exhibit almost right away. Upon starting the tour, you receive a boarding pass with a name of a passenger. At the end of the exhibit, you can look your name up on the wall and see if you survived or not. Jeanna was given Miss Hanora "Nora" O’Leary, third class and I received Miss Olga Elida Lundin, third class. I bemoaned our fate since not many third class passengers survived (something like 136 lived and 540 died), but Jeanna assured me that we would survive because if we had been on the boat, we would have contingency plans for emergencies and would never leave one another.
We started through the exhibit and I must say it was awe inspiring. They had some of the exhibit made up to look like the actual rooms, which was cool. They had lists of how much foodstuff had been taken on board (40 tons of potatoes, for instance), quotes from people, recovered artifacts, stories about the people on board, a huge iceberg to touch, and all kinds of information about the disaster.
Towards the end of the tour, we came upon the passenger list and began searching for our names. Jeanna has known a fair amount of people who have seen the exhibit and not one of them had survived. We looked for her first and found her name among the survivors, but didn't see me. Another look, however, showed that both of us survived the disaster, showing that two friends like us can get through anything together. ;-)
After that, we walked through the Cullen Hall of Gems and Minerals (cool, but way too long) and then went to the Cockrell Butterfly Center. We saw tons of butterflies, even one that was laying her eggs on a plant, took a bunch of pictures, and even saw a huge, really cool looking iguana. We got some great jewelry on sell in one of the gift shops, but now that I get home and look at the receipt, it appears that the discount wasn't taken off, so I'll have to call them tomorrow and see if I can get it straightened out.
After grabbing a coke and some chips from a gas station, we went to the French Impressionism: Masterpieces from Copenhagen´s Ordrupgaard Collection and the Masterworks from El Greco to Picasso in The Phillips Collection at The Museum of Fine Arts.
Some of the stuff was just gorgeous and I found some pieces and artists that I want to learn more about, but some of it I just wasn't that interested in. Jeanna pointed out that I really go for landscapes and stuff more than I do for paintings of people and she is so right.
After we grabbed some hot dogs at James Coney Island, we did our gift exchange. She got me Stila's Creme Bouquet perfume that I just love, a book of haiku, a beautiful copy of The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry, and Arabat by Clive Barker (which was a very special treat because I didn't even know he had a new book out). In an odd twist, I had given her Rod Stewart's "It Had to Be You... The Great American Songbook", but she got it from her sister for Christmas, so she gave it back to me since I didn't have a copy.
All in all, it was an incredibly fun day, even if I am exhausted and my feet are killing me from walking around so much. I hope everyone else had a Sunday as wonderful as the one I had.
