The Great Pop vs. Soda Controversy

Being from the south, whenever I ask for a carbonated beverage, I ask for a coke (of course, all I drink is Coke products, but I digress). Christine sent me a link today to The Great Pop vs. Soda Controversy. I found it amusing that while there were almost 10,000 more votes for pop and soda apiece, calling a beverage a coke seems to span a larger geographic area. I went and added my vote for coke. So, what do you say?

After clicking on Texas, I found out that 78.34% of all Texans call it coke, which accounts for 25.94% of all coke responses. I guess we do carry a lot of weight on votes. (We get the third most votes in the electoral college.)

If anyone calls it anything but Coke, they get the evil eye.

Hmmm, I'm from St. Louis, and it's a big point of discussion between St. Louisans and people from the "other side" of Missouri. (Kansas City and the surrounding areas...) It's "soda" in St. Louis, and "pop" in Kansas City. Never could stand to hear it called "pop," for some reason.

Coke also works for me because it's the only soft drink that I actually ask for. If they don't have Coke I'll go with lemonade instead. Pepsi is just too syrupy.

I was raised in Michigan, I just thought it sounded a little weird to hear "soda" (never gave anyone a weird look). Since I moved to Las Vegas, people look at me weird or give me a hard time when I ask what kind of "pop" they have. Get over it, anyway "soda" has ice cream in it, look it up (most dictionary definitions state that a "soda" has ice cream in it).

Coke is ubiqitous, it perhaps has the greatest name recognition in world history. Coming from Michigan, and now living in Boston, I do get strange looks. But if broken down, and even on the east coast, I have seen Red Pop, Orange Pop, and yes Soda Pop. This would lead to the conclusion that Soda is an adjective and Pop is a noun when refereing to this as soft drink.

In Australia (and the UK and NZ, I believe), its just a 'soft drink'. Occasionally fast food outlets will advertise a "Hamburger and Coke", meaning any carbonated drink.

The term "pop" comes from the type of bottle that was used. The first "pop" bottles had a glass ball that when filled then turned up-side-down not let the "soda" fall out of the bottle. The pressure created by the carbonation would further seal the ball in the neck of the bottle. It would then stay there after being righted. To open, you would slap the top of the bottle and the resulting pressure would make the ball pop out of its place and would create the "pop" sound. Hence it was called a "pop".

I am from Buffalo, NY, and we are hardcore pop country. Soda DEFINITELY has ice cream in it. . . I also think it's interesting that "soda", when used (incorrectly) is generally a count noun - "I'll have a soda" versus pop, which is a mass noun - "I'll have some pop," or "I'll have a can of pop". My boyfriend is from NYC and he hates the word pop! I saw a sign outside of Phoenix that advertised pop - I was so happy (after a couple weeks of soda, out in the desert, I was desperate! LOL) so I took a picture!

Although I drink MOUNTAIN DEW, Here in Colorado and much of the mid-west we are often refering to it as a "Soda Pop"!
Interesting controversy, though Soda gets are vote!

the rest is just slang for the real term

pop just sounds like a silly slang term.

Here in the East, we say soda, but this is crazy. I went to the popvssoda.com and the people were practically coming to blows in pennsylvania... Next time I think I'll just have water.

Being from Pittsburgh, PA - the only "soda" I knew was when you mixed Pop with ice cream- such as a root bear soda. I love this Pop vs. Soda debate - I thought that we in Pittsburgh were the only Pop drinkers. I'm glad that there are many others throughout this great land!
