Ireland - An Islamic Country?

I happened to click on one of my BlogSnob links today because it was entitled Religion - All the thoughts left unsaid and I thought it sounded interesting. So I go visit his site and find this post (quoted from below):

To the best of my knowledge, there is no other terrorist group associated or affiliated with a major religion--nay for a few blow-up-abortion-doctor-people.
Now, I'm not forgetting about the crusades either...that was entirely our bad.

Now, the first thing I thought of when I read this is, "Um, ever hear of Ireland?" I didn't realize the IRA was Islamic, though I guess that could be what the I stands for. I'm not saying that a lot of terrorist activities aren't tied to Islamic organizations, but to say that all religions but Islam (with the exception of the crusades) have nothing to do with those kind of activities is completely wrong. In Ireland Catholics and Protestants are killing each other, not Muslims killing them. Religion is probably the biggest reason that people kill each other and I mean all people, not just Muslims. It just bugged me that he didn't have any place to leave comments and I couldn't just leave a little note saying, "Ireland - that's an Islamic country?".

When I hit "Dub (my hero)" that's normally a sign for me to stop reading and just move on. Like passing a car wreck...

Yes, but unlike the Islamic Fundamentalist, the IRA might have a good reason for protecting their culture and soil from the Brits. I mean, messing with Guiness pouring methods? If someone were to mess with McDonalds here, there'd be cruise missiles filling the air faster than you can say Jack Robinson.

You might want to read a bit more about the history of Northern Ireland. It's not a "religous war", Catholics and Protestants don't hate each other because of relgious differences there, most don't give a care either way. But the history has a catholic country being invaded by a protestant one (England) and the English leaving their Protestant cousins to "oversee" the Catholics. So it is a bit different that a truly religous war, which is what Islamic extremists seem to want to fight.

well, in all fairness, he DID say "to the best of my knowledge...". too bad his knowledge is extrememly limited.

dammit, i shoulda listened to Christine. but no, i kept reading after Dub (my hero). i love how she wants to blame all islamics for the actions of a few terrorists. is she forgetting that the religion that's most prevalent in the world is Islam? and by that same rationale, can't we blame all christians for abortion clinic bombings?

I can honestly say that I am studying the Irish Catholic, and Irish Protestant ideals of things. It seems as though there was a lot of social boundaries for the two peoples if they were in the wrong area. It was almost racial, the bonds of hate were so strong against one another. Seeing as how Christianity in itself is the worlds most popular based form of religion, these two peoples live neck to neck because of the simple form of their religion. As viewed in something that would be more commonplace, such as Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt, you see that the family was looked down upon for being Catholic, and being Protestant all at once. Perhaps someone should look at these things before they make their own opinion on these things. The facts are simple. Irish killed one another while still fighting with the English over the simple idea of religion.
