Flame the Beta

Last night I bought a pretty red and blue beta to be friends with my other beta, Spike. Since his colors remind me of fire, I named him Flame. I've read that betas are actually happier when they are put next to each other for short periods of time (but not in the same tank, of course!). Spike was very lively when I had another beta around, but the other guy died several months ago. I noticed this past week that he's been really listless, so maybe Flame will perk him up.

Have seen a few betas while in the fish store and had always thought that there spaces where so tiny. I am I right in assuming from this post that they are solitary fish you enjoy small spaces?

Actually, betas are happier in a small space, surprisingly enough. I read that space in those cups are equal to the space that they would occupy in the wild in Thailand's rice paddies, where they are originally from. Once again, you learn something every day at the neurotic fishbowl!

Awww. Congrats on the new fish purchase. It's neat that you have a Betta named Spike. We had a Betta named Spike - he died in December. He is missed terribly. We just purchased 2 new fish babies not long ago and I am already in love. Then again, I'm a fish lover period. :)

I hope Spike and Flame become fast friends - or at least playing buddies. :)

hi! I know the pet stores sell betas in those little tiny containers, and insist that the fish like it, but I really do not think tht this could be true. Most people that really care about their fish put them in at least a 5-gallon aquarium. If, as you insist, they do like small spaces, you could put in some rocks or something so that if the fish wish to hide in a confined space they could do so, but also have the freedom to swim around if they want to.

I am a new owner of 2 bettas. They each have a 1/2 gallon bowl and both tend to lay in the bottom of they're bowls most of the time, unless of course they are put side-by-side for a minute. I can't seem to find much on normal behavior. So, experienced betta watchers, do they normally look kind of lazy?
